Fifty Shades of Painful Reading Experience
« on: April 21, 2012, 09:33 PM »
I just finished the first book of the 'Fifty Shades of Gray' trilogy (barely) and I can't say I'll be picking up the second or third. Ever.
I saw all the hype on tv about it, searched it up on Amazon, and ignored the hundreds of 'one star reviews.'
I should have listened.
I've never hated a book before, just majorly disliked, but this? This one did it.
I felt like I was trapped in a hole that just kept getting deeper and impossible to climb.
I reaiized by the third chapter that things weren't going to get better.
The heroine made me want to weep in denial that I was reading about her 'Inner Goddess' and the hero made me want to call the Secret Service for stalking and just being creepy.
Creeping isn't romantic.
The vocabulary and grammar were gut wrenching, and the unrealistic plot (sexy billionaire, not millionaire, but billionaire with a BDSM fetish and 21 year old virgin whose never masturbated, but orgasms at the drop of a hat) was embarrassing to read about.
This was apparently considered 'shocking erotica' by the Today Show...I've read more shocking erotica with a Captain Underpants Flip-O-Rama comic.
Basically, the only thing I can think of is WHY? Why did this lady write this book? What possessed her to turn a Twilight fanfiction into a published novel?
Author, lady, whatever your name is...don't quit your day job.

Overly sensationalized book, famous but not that good even.

This book is a disaster. Gosh. I don't dislike the aim of the writer about it being an erotica or something. but come on. its not erotic, really. It doesn't turn on anybody. when I was reading the part Grey telling her that he is very attached to his p****, i was like, "duh? aren't they all?"

And another thing that pisses me off, is when somebody learns that I didn't like the book, they go like, "Oh, honey don't you read erotic books?" and ask me if it was too erotic for me. Oh, hell no! I've read a lot of them and this book is the worst. ugh

Ha, this was the response I got from all my friends when they asked if I'd read it yet. Everyone wanted to talk to me about this stupid book and I kept saying I'm not reading that garbage. So naturally they all assumed I wouldn't read an erotic or bdsm book. There are soooooo many better erotic books out there and I can't believe so many people got caught up in the hype of this book. Even older women who've never even read a romance novel were reading this crap (like my aunts *cough cough*). Trends belong in fashion, not in what we read.

Hi everyone! Well, I couldn't help but read through your views on this book. Honestly, when I first started reading the book, I was hooked. But eventually, it all seemed so redundant. The ending was forced-- it was as if there was a deadline that ha to be met. Not only that, who in the right mind would go through a suicidal mission of saving your husband's sister when you are pregnant!? I'm sorry, I just couldn't internalize that part of the book. And yeah, amen to the comment stating that there was just so much sex going on, I started skipping those parts as I read on. And not only that, the dispute between Jack and Christian was not even clearly settled. The author clearly focused on getting things heated that the essence of te story wasn't really that emphasized. I admit, Christian's ways were sweet at times; I'd like to have a man who would want me all to himself.

Love this thread. I tried to read the first book when it started making the rounds among the moms at my son's school, but I couldn't get through one chapter it was so bad. To my friends' credit only about half of them were able to read it-- the rest thought it was pure drek.

The only thing I have to say in defense of the author, having seen her in a brief interview clip, is that she never intended for this to be anything other than a bit of fan fiction she wrote to amuse herself. She seemed kind of mortified that it took off (though I'm sure the $$ is awesome). She said the whole thing was her "mid-life crisis writ large."

At the end of the day I'm more upset that so many people seem to have no clue that this is really bad writing than the fact that it was written, and published, in the first place.

I don't know-- maybe those who liked this book haven't had a feel of other erotica books that made them conclude that this trilogy is the best there is. I enjoyed the exchange of emails. That was probably the part that brought me to stifle some of my giggles.

One Erotica book that I quite enjoyed is Accidentally on Purpose :) It wasn't too much and the heroine wasn't all too melodramatic :)

So true! They make me want to list the erotic books I've read. But I might get judged as a pervert. Haha. So I kinda pity the people who read the Fifty Shades as their first erotic book. I wanna pat their back and say I'm sorry for them.  :(

The sad thing is that this book did so well in the market because of people that don't read. The writing and story line was simple and most people thought that was hard core erotic scene. Clearly they never read Christine frehan or Anne rice sleeping beauty series. It was simple to follow and didn't leave novice readers lost. The emails were a nice change for a book though :)
Thanks :) have a great day

I agree   ( and I read all 3  thinking they have to get better)     But as to why she wrote them   I am guessing the $95 million she got wiould be incentive....  though I do have to ask    why on earth people thought they were "erotic"   it was some of the most vanilla sex I have ever read about    adn did anyone esle find it revolting that ususally the house keeper had to wash the sex toys?   ( wonders if she put them in the dishwasher with the dinner dishes, and quite probably the toilet brush)
I am not a complete idiot, some parts are missing    :)

Late to the party, but I need to vent .

The Fifty Shades of Grey saga is terrible, one of the worsts sagas ever written: the characters have no depth at all, they are too boring to carry a short story, so why the author thought they were good enough for a trilogy is beyond me, Ana has no self-respect, I've seen some people refer to her as a doormat and that is the best term to describe her, she constantly does things she doesn't want to do just to please Christian or because she is afraid of losing him, she becomes a sub even though she is not really into BDSM and has no idea what it entails, her inner monologue is boring as shows no personality, her inner goddess deserves to be tied to a cactus and then thrown into a swimming-pool full of lemon juice, and she constantky ignores Christian's problematic behaviour or finds it cute instead of creepy.
Christian is not a Prince Charming, he is a stalker that tries to control every aspect of Ana's life even though he has no right and he belongs in jail, period. The way he goes after Ana is beyond creepy, and is clear he should stay away from all women until the day he no longer feels the need to beat women who resemble his mother.

The book sells an abusive relationship as romantic, now, I enjoy twisted romances, but what Fifty Shades of Grey paints as a great romance is actually a sad story of two people so obsessed with each other they become co-dependant. Is disgusting.

And of course there is the fact that the author wrote a BDSM story and yet she didn't care enough to investigate and learn how a real BDSM relationship works, which I could accept if it was just a fanfic, but a published book should try to be more respectful with the elements included in the story.

Regarding the grammar and the style, other people already said it, is terrible. There is nothing of interest there.

I've read some terrible books, but Fifty Shades is the first book I wanted to punch and throw out the window (the only reason I restrained myself is that I was reading it in my computer and the poor thing didn't deserve it, but if I've had a physical copy of the book, I'd have done it)

I'm a first time poster, long time lurker and searcher of fanfic pdfs :)
Firstly, this thread:  >:D
I haven't read FSoG, but I read the fanfic 'Master of the Universe' - are the two much different?
I found MOtU really annoying. I kept hoping that Bella would grow a back bone and kick E (or should I say 50?) to the curb. I refuse to pay money for the book which is why I read the pdf fanfic online for free, haha.
If the book isn't much different from the fanfic (ie just a change of name):
The only people who would find this book erotic are those who have had bad or mediocre experience in the bedroom.
The male lead is disturbing.
I would like to see so many women loving it and him if he was poor and unattractive.
This book embraces and promotes the worst aspects of relationships and perpuates DV culture as 'romance'.
Every time I see the book I just think 'how embarassment'. I guess the writer sleeps easy with all that money, but it's so cringeworthy.

I am starting this book for the 4th time. And while i know the writing is absolutely horrendous, i am still a sucker for the love story regardless of how seemingly screwed up it is.

Any opinions about the new book (Grey FS#4)?
I would like to know how it works the change of point of view and if the author style is the same.
