Review: Deadly Cool by Gemma Halliday

Title: Deadly Cool
Author: Gemma Halliday
Genre: YA/Mystery
Rating: 4

Summary: A high school student confronts her cheating boyfriend, only to find the body of the other girl in his closet. While the cops focus on catching him, she has to exonerate him before the real killer strikes again.

Review: There's alot of adult romance/mystery hybrids out there: pet sitters, home decorators, restaurateurs, museum curators, librarians, head chefs, innkeepers, you name an occupation and there's a series out there starring said character solving murders and annoying detectives/private eyes/investigative journalists along the way (yeah, I've read way too many of these types of books). Surprisingly though, I can only think of one other author writing YA books in this genre and that series has a paranormal twist, which is weird because the transition from adult to YA totally works.

It helps that Ms. Halliday is well experienced in the genre (I've read a couple of books in her High Heels series), but I'd say this series is even better than her adult books. The plot moves along nicely, isn't dumbed down for the YA audience, and the MC is actually sassier and more fun than in her previous series, although this book still follows most of the conventions and tropes for the genre. I would rank this as as good as if not better than most similar series for adults - although it is more PG, so for fans of murder/t7608 looking for a light&fun read I would definately recommend disregarding the intended YA audience and reading this one.
