Are you a cover snob?
« on: October 08, 2011, 01:55 PM »
After a few discussions about book covers I decided to start a thread dealing with book covers and whether or not you 'judge a book by it's cover' hehehe ;)

Do you base your ebook purchases on whether or not the cover is appealing to you? What are your favorite and least favorite book covers? Feel free to post links of photo's of book covers you love or hate.

I must say that I am, in fact, a total cover snob and have bought many books that pretty much sucked based on the fact that the cover drew me in, and I have probably missed out on just as many great books because I hated the covers. *bows head in shame*

Eeeh, my answer is a resounding YES! So shallow, I know. In my defense I don't always fall for the cover. :P
As for favorite and least favorite covers, uh, I have to shuffle through and actually look through the favorite ones, as for the opposite, I can't say I know, I don't really pay attention to those. :S

When it comes to authors I know and love/hate I go by experience. Otherwise I have definitely picked up books solely on their cover, but I don't judge just on that, I also read the blurb.
But an ugly cover on a book I haven't heard of before? I don't even notice it most of the time.

Yes, I am. Usually read the blurbs too but a nice cover does entice. And similarly, a not so nice cover puts me off sometimes. Remember the cover for "Beautiful Disaster", did not even read the blurb until I read a no. of good reviews for the book and then read both the blurb and the book inspite of the cover :).

This is to funny. I just realized I'm a complete cover snob hehe. A few of my reading buddies keep telling me to read Christine Feehan's novels but I just can't bring myself to do it cause the covers are so cheesy.

Actually most covers are getting much better these days, if you look at some of the covers from like 2005, for example I went back and reread the a couple of series' and the first covers are horrible, especially compared to reprints and the later books.

I actually prefer some of the older covers vs those of the reprints- one example would be L.J. Smith's Night World series. (Check the links below for pics of each) Maybe that's just me though ;)

I mean sure, in the original covers they all had super bad 80's/90's hair but the covers were scarier, more indepth whereas nowadays its all about the appeal of physical appearances....no offense to anyone but our generation is all about '$ex appeal' over quality and imagination....

I just added her to my list of books NOT to read in the other thread, lol.  The one I tried to listen to on audio WAS cheesy, lol.  She has a HUGE following, but I can't bring myself to even try again, the one I listened to was so bad.

Same with me I go by the authors I love, read the description.  Fortunately I am only disappointed with how the story goes that I don't notice their covers.  But for the sake of giving books as gift I go for covers first then the story  :)

I like to have a cover but it's not necessary. I am a bookworm and will read or try to read just about anything ;)

Yes, yes and YES! I am a book cover snob! I hate to download/purchase books with missing covers. I have no idea why the cover is so important. (Maybe therapy will help me to dig deeper).  ;) I have ebooks that I haven't even read, just because the cover was HOT! I begin to read them, but for some reason the page won't turn! Who knew!?! Anyway, that's my confession, keep it between us.  ;D

I like to have the covers but it is not necessary.  I have gone and copied covers from book sites and author sites and put one on in Calibre. Sometimes the pixels aren't right but at least the thumbnails are there.

Unfortunately I am. If I stumble across a book with an unappealing cover, there's is a chance I won't read it. For some reason, I am attracted to dark cover. maybe because it indicates to me there's a dark theme in the book. If I see a baby on the cover, there's a 99.9% I won't read it.  Unless of course, I heard the book being recommended several times/a keeper then I will just ignore the cover and give the book a chance.

I'm a snob in the sense that I like to collect books with those original version covers. I' m quite proud of my harry potters, my robin hobbs, and some really old douglas adams' that i managed to find. Whenever I go to someone's house with a complete collection of a few classic titles I go into full-on envy mode >_<

I love my university bookstore because they sell really ancient books that no one actually reads (or buys) anymore.

And don't get me started on the comics.

Didn't used to be cover snob, since I bought most of my books through 10-12 book clubs all my life & paid more attention to a book's synopsis.  Paperbacks maybe a little.

Now I have a ton of old books I mostly downloaded in bulk years ago from dedicated sharers, who scanned them in before the days of Kindle, etc.  Most do not have covers & the books have kind of lost something.

As for today's books, if the cover screams S*E*X  I pass, period.  That kind of cover says to me that it's pushing p*o*r*n, and the story line is probably an afterthought.  Of course, if you're looking for Eroctia, great.  If you're looking for a good story, I'd try something else.  (Kinda reminds me of the old "heaving bosoms" covers, which I also passed on.)
Don't mind helping people.  Do mind being taken advantage of.

Yes, I must admit that I am a cover snob.  If the cover does not draw my attention I tend to move on. I do believe that I may have missed several good reads that way, and I have also gotten a few books that weren't really worth my time, but hey it had a beautiful cover so the book must be good!!! NOT!!!!!

I am most definately a cover snob. But it about the sell isnt it ? it needs to be appealing to the eye, if its pretty people will want to look at it and buy it. Ive bought many books based solely on the cover, I am drawn to shiney covers or sparkley ones, metallic or holographic style. i think my copy of Divergent has been my fave this year. I also hate it when they change the style or size of a book halfway through the series and my books dont match grrrr  >:(
