Ok, I'd love to kick off this thread....

I am looking for some recommendations. Are there any other readers of good old fashioned ghost stories?

Atmospheric and creepy, chills in the dark, spooky, rainy, thunder & lightning nights; afraid to look in your closet kind of tales.
Haunted woods, haunted buildings, haunted Universities, insane asylums; forgotten & neglected southern mansions or
northern manors w/ their family cemeteries......got the idea?

Purely fiction. It can be gory, or not.

But, preferably, no obvious Vampires, Werewolves, or Shapeshifters and such...none of the usual magic or spell casting,
well unless it's voodoo or the like and the ghosts' spirits are conjured thru it...like using a Ouija Board.

YA is OK.

For example, the first 3 books by Cherie Priest (Four and Twenty Blackbirds, Wings to the Kingdom, Not Flesh Nor Feathers)
featuring Eden Moore's character and a southern-gothic theme were just the ticket.
Just the covers alone got me buying the books...see here...You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

If anyone has suggestions, I'd LUV to hear them...and many thanks to all my STP friends, Liz

PS: I have to admit I haven't read even a smidgen of what is posted and that I have posted here, but the hunt is my favored pastime. Wow, sorry for the long post... :-X

@Liz- have you read Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake? I only just started it but so far it seems dark and intense (well for YA anyways). You might like it.

Liz, first thing that popped into mind was Kat Richardson's Greywalker.
Recovering from a near-fatal accident, Seattle Private Investigator Harper Blaine develops the ability to move through the Grey: the realm of ghosts, vampires, witches, and magic that exists between our world and the next. Harper wants her life to return to normal, but when her clients turn out to be paranormal, the reluctant Greywalker is drawn into the affairs of ambitious vampires and angry ghosts. As her cases converge, Harper uncovers a plot that threatens Seattle’s Grey world and must choose between honor and survival.

Mostly it's about ghosts, though as the summary says, it touches other mythical creatures. I've read just a few books in the series, there's uh 6 now if I remember right. And I'm not sure it's purely fiction, it's been years since I've last read this, but it wasn't a bad read back then.
Search button is your best friend. Use it.

Does anyone have any recommendations for YA books, that are romance. I know that doesnt narrow it down, but they can be paramormal or realistic or with action.
Also i really liked the Shifters series by Rachel Vincent, as well as the Strange Angels series by Lili St. Crow. Also Born at Midnight by C.C. Hunter
If you have any suggestions for books that you liked like these or of the above                                                                                                      ^^
please could you post. ive need ideas for books. Not vampire books, unless you lthink they are REALLY good, or if one or so character is one, but thats not what the book is mainly about. Thank you in advanced!! :)

@strawberry -

I read tons of YA books, here's a few suggestions based off genres:

Dystopian w/ romance:

Divergent by Veronica Roth
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
Awaken by Katie Kacvinsky
Matched by Ally Condie

Ghost/spirit w/romance:

Hereafter by Tara Hudson
Mercy (and Exile) by Rebecca Lim *not sure if this is the right genre but I loved it so much :)

Greek gods/goddesses w/ romance:

Starcrossed by Josephine Angelini
Abandon by Meg Cabot

Witches w/ romance:

Sweep series by Cate Tiernan

Angels/demons w/ romance:

The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare
The Infernal Devices series by Cassandra Clare
Angel burn by L.A. Weatherly
Angelfall by Susan Ee

Strictly romance (non-paranormal):
Perfect Chemistry series by Simone Elkeles
Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire (a must read)
Thoughtless (and Effortless) by S.C. Stephens *more 'adult' themed but unbelievable reads

hope this helps, need any more ideas let me know, i'd be glad to help :)

I'm looking for books with a separate female and male POV, preferably YA.
Something like:
- Blood Magic
- Dash & Lily's Book of Dares
- Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist
- Shiver (series)
- Lament (series)
- Perfect Chemistry (series)
Any genre would do.

Thanks Aerinn & Jessadia,

Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake will be up to read very soon. The cover really caught my eye.
Somewhere there was a thread about being a cover snob  ;) "Do you judge a book by it's cover?"
"Would you buy a book based on the cover?" Something like that.

And I have been meaning to start the Greywalker Series. Now I'll boost them up on my list!

The cover was the main reason I purchased Anna Dressed in Blood. Lol :)  I am a total cover snob and have most likely passed over hundreds of good books due to covers and bought just as many bad ones b/c of eye catching cover art. I'm horrible I know :)

btw- liz, i think 'are you a cover snob?' (or something similar) would be a great thread to add to the Cafe if you wanted to start one ;)

Hi Princess! What kind of book would you like to read?
Something light? - you could try Gini Koch Katherine Katt series (Touched by an Alien, Alien Tango, Alien in the Family). I laughed like crazy!

Something dark? - you could try Stephen Woodworth Violets series (Through Violet Eyes, With Red Hands, In Golden Blood and From Black Rooms)

Also Princess, if you want to stick to the same genre as Iron Fey, Faerie Path by Frewin Jones is very similar, while imo none of the books are as great as Iron Daughter they're all better than Iron Knight.

Oh they're similar? like how similar? uggh i guess its for me to find out thanks for the suggestion :)

No, Violets are not into zombies, even if the dead are involved! But they stay dead!  ;)

I didn't read the Iron Fey series: I'm taking a vacation from YA, so I don't know what style the book has. But, a YA book I ejoyed is Kristin Cashore's Graceling - have you read it? I think that you would like it!

AP (AnonymousPrincess) - If you liked Iron Fey series, you might also like Wonderous Strange series by Lesley Livingston. It is not 5 star IMO like Iron king / Daughter / Queen, but it is somewhere like 4 stars for me.

I also heard good things about Faeriewalker series and Wicked Lovely series, (I haven't read either of them yet).

Not sure if you already read them though.:P

I tend to read a book a day (I swear, it's an addiction!) so I am constantly looking for new books. Thankfully, I can usually re-read books, which helps when I can't find new authors I actually like. I like some YA as well as fantasy, paranormal romance, and a tiny little bit of mystery, romance, and sci-fi.
My number one requirement for a book is that it has to have a happy ending. I'm willing to put up with some pretty horrific content (e.g., Kenyon's Acheron) so long as it ends up happy. I like books with magical content; whether that's actual magic, preternatural creatures (vampires, etc), telepathic powers (Bradley's Darkover), as long as there's that hint of "other", I'm good.

Here are the books/authors/series I can think of that I've read and liked: Asprin's Myth series, Piers Anthony, Amelia Atwater-Rhodes, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Patricia Briggs, Jim Butcher, Steven Brust, Trudi Canavan, Artemis Fowl series, Mary Janice Davidson, Diane Duane, David Eddings, Raymond Feist, Terry Goodkind, Laurell K. Hamilton, Elizabeth Haydon, Hendee's Noble Dead Saga, Hobb's Assassin books, Kenyon's Dark/Dream-Hunter series, Song in the Silence by Kerner, Katherine Kerr's Daggerspell series, Gregory Keyes' Waterborn, all of Mercedes Lackey, Gail Z. Martin, Anne McCaffrey, Robin McKinley, Meyer's Water Mirror, ~Twilight series (somewhat), Karen Moning, Garth Nix's Sabriel, Philip Pullman, Norton's Elvenbane, all of Tamora Pierce, Jennifer Roberson's Sword- series, Recluce series, Nora Roberts, Robb's In Death series, Michelle Sagara West, Carrie Vaughan, Patricia Wrede, Maria Snyder, Cassandra Clare, Feehan's Dark series, Jim Hines, Terry Pratchett, Karen Miller, Patrick Rothfuss, Millenium Trilogy (w/ Lisbeth Sanders), Croggon's Pellinor series, Jordan's Wheel of Time, Incarceron, Faith Hunter, Hunger Games series, Maze Runner series, Orson Scott Card.....I'm sure there're others, but that's what comes to mind.

Lackey, Pierce, and Roberts/Robb are probably my favorite authors, simply because everything they write is good and they're extremely prolific. Quality is important, of course, but I do like quantity in an author. It's not necessary, by any means, but it's a nice perk.

So...any suggestions? Pretty please?

Thanks,
Kallisti
