Hard Copy vs. E-Books
« on: October 28, 2011, 01:20 AM »
Obviously, everyone on here likes to read e-books. But I tend to be curious, so I had a few questions...

1. Do you *only* read books in e-format? Why or why not?
2. Do you prefer reading books in hard copy or e-format?
3. Which is more extensive, your hard copy library or your e-library?
4. Do you have duplicate books, in both formats? Lots or just a few?
..and if anyone has other questions, feel free to post them.

Here're my answers:
1. No, I have tons of books in hard copy. But my husband has been trying to get me to read more e-books so that we don't have to build an outbuilding just for my books. ;]
2. I'm a reading slut; I don't care which format it is so long as I get to read it. The biggest plus about e-books for me is that I live an hour from the nearest bookstore, and my local library is tiny, so it's easier to buy a new book in e-format than it is to spend gas + book money.
4. At the moment, I don't have many duplicates. I'm thinking about trying to back up my hard copy library with e-books, because I've had too many occasions where my books get lost, "borrowed" for eternity, or eaten by my dogs (not kidding, they've eaten at least three books that I know of).

I have almost over a thousand books in hard format and after i started running out of space to store them is when I turned to e-format. My e-library and hard copy library are both extensive.. but in e-library i have more authors now as and when I keep discovering them. If I love a particular author i discover in e-books, i make it a point o buy hard copies also because my library is very precious to me and I need to keep expanding it.

One of the biggest advantages I found in e-books is that when I travel, I can carry all my fave authors/books-8406 with me everyone. Till a year back, my bags weighed a ton because I never carried anything less than half a dozen books even if I'm travelling for two days.  :D It was always one of my quirks... If I suddenly had a craving to re-read a particular book and I didn't have it, it would amount to massive panic attacks.

I personally feel nothing can replace of charms of owning books in hard copy. It started as a hobby, became an obsession and then developed into a lifestyle habit. E-books are definitly much more convenient but books have a certain sense of nostalgia that never goes away

I prefer reading ebooks.  My allergies act up with hard copies especially if I have bought the books at used book stores or garage sales and they get the least bit musty.  My hard copy editions have dwindled almost to nothing as I have downsized as I replace copies with ebooks.  I do not keep duplicates unless the book has been signed by the author.
Please excuse any spelling errors.   I have dyslexic fingers!

Because of the prices of the books become so expensive and so many to buy, I read ebooks...

I love books, and I read them in either hard copy or e-format. I own a Kindle Touch (lovely birthday present from my aunt) and I love the convenience of having all your books in one place and its easy to carry around. However, I love, love, love hard copy books. I love the feel of it in my hands and even the smell! I'd pick that over an ebook, but given space constraints in my tiny apartment, it's economical for me to get ebooks for now.

I think my ebook collection has surpassed the number of physical ebooks that I have. I do have soft copies of some of the actual books that I own, and I get new books nearly every day. I haven't purchased a physical ebook in months now (space issues again), but I think I've bought maybe fifty ebooks or so in the last two months.

Eep! I know this thread is about a year ago... But well, just wanted to add my two cents in it. ;)

I love reading books, whether it is the physical or the ebooks. As of now, I'm reading ebook cause it's easier and I can get it almost anywhere over the internet, sometimes, free (since Amazon does have books that are free).

BUT if my budget could do, I tend to buy the physical books of the ebooks I already read. I just buy the ones in my favorites list. I like re-reading books so yeah. And also, I like the smell of the physical books. :azn: weird much.

If something is lying there quiet you just have to poke at it to see if it is still breathing don't you?  :D  Word of advice if you go to Fla do NOT poke the alligator to see if it's alive.

I just had to say that so I better answer the questions huh?

1. Do you *only* read books in e-format? Why or why not?

I will read books in any format... HOWEVER.... since I have only acquired books in ebook format since Jan, I am reading only ebook format.  And I have to admit, I have picked ebook over physical when given a choice. Why? Storage.

2. Do you prefer reading books in hard copy or e-format?

I honestly don't care.  Again the issue is space.

3. Which is more extensive, your hard copy library or your e-library?

My ebook.  One DVD can hold several Calibre libraries of about 2000 or  3000 books.  It adds up quick.

4. Do you have duplicate books, in both formats? Lots or just a few?

A few.  Again space is the issue

I have a friend who is just as die hard as I was [note WAS] about NOT going to ebooks.  I had the chance to buy a ereader for 33 dollars.  I figured that was a good price to see what the fuss was about.  I purchased it.   When I told my friend I had about 1500 books on the ereader and could prob put up to 20000 on the largest SD card it took [if not more] my friend keeps looking at it when I carry it with me going "2000 books.  You can't carry 2000 print books around with you."  I think that is why she is going to end up buying one.  2000 books in your pocket that can be read any time and any where..   She also mutters something about storage space.

I know, right?! :D

I only buy paperbacks if it's really good. I will never buy it all though. I prolly have 1000+ ebooks now. I'm quite satisfied with the ebooks. ;)

Well if you do end up getting chased by a gator because of the poking habit, remember while they can run fast, they can't corner.  They have to slide to stop on their belly then turn and start running again.   So just turn.

And don't be like a guy I know.  He was being chased and his buddies were in the pick up yelling "TURN"  He yelled "Which Way?"  And yes this is a true story.  :D  He's lucky he didn't end up being the main course and his lunch he was going to have but left to the gator would have been the appetizer.

OMG. On Oct26th I would be going to a zoo!!! And there'll be lots of gators! I was there 2weeks ago too. Just having an ocular visit. And honestly, I wanted to poke them cause they're like statues with their mouth open and not moving. :o ???

I wanna know if they are freakin' real cause they are so NOT moving even one bit.

Just remember a small gator can do about 25 mph on dry land.  A large [granddaddy size] can do about 7 mph.  If you can run faster than that you'll be fine.

Try a 25 foot tree.

Honestly, you do NOT want to know if a gator can move.  If it moves, you better be already gone.  And do NOT pick up a cute little tiny baby gator.  If they whistle, Mom will answer and it will be ANY and all Moms in hearing distance.

But it's boring just looking at them not moving. It's like you pay for the entrance fee just to see them like a stone, not moving a bit. :(

I prefer real books.  I love how they smell and how they feel, and it's nice to be able to flip back a few pages to remember a new character's name or something that happened that you kind of forgot.  I have three or four floor to ceiling bookshelves in my bedroom at home and stacks of books all over the floor, dresser, and bed.  However much I prefer hard copies of books, ebooks have been very convenient.  I couldn't fit all of my books into my dorm room.  Also, for travel, having over 100 books on my ipod relieves me of the task of choosing which two or three books to take on a trip and hoping I don't finish them all too quickly. I have a few duplicate books, old favorites that I like to have with me all the time.

1. I mostly read in e-format, but some non-fiction is best printed
2. Definitely e, if only for the convenience of hving everything close!
3. eLibrary is now larger, but it took four years to get there. Oops.
4. I do have some in both formats, but nothing in recent fiction. I love the ease of getting an ebook.
