Looking for Book Recs!
« on: December 03, 2012, 10:59 PM »
I just finished reading the entire Kushiel series by Jacqueline Carey, and now I'm basically spoiled.

Does anyone have a rec for something similar (or something completely different that I might like based on what I do like?)

I like:

David Weber

Robin Hobb

Jacqueline Carey

Max Brooks

Sarah Rees Brennan

Terry Pratchett

Lois M. Bujold

and so on....

So ANY kind of book recs are welcome, really!

I haven't laughed so hard in ages.  He put me in mind of Pratchett for some reason.

I enjoyed that one so much I went and bought the second one right away [which should actually be the first one]

I've read Riordan and Carter, they're both quite good, but I've never heard of the others!

 >:D  Now to find them!

Thanks!

I like your reference list. :3

Um- let's see...

1. Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. Urban Fantasy about a Wizard in Chicago. Smart, whoop-worthy and heartbreaking by turns, but always funny- and with 14 books in series, it should give you plenty to read. But I'd suggest starting at the third book instead of the first, since that's where the series really picks up.

2. Codex Alera, Jim Butcher. Alternate Universe Fantasy. Magical Roman Legionaries vs. Barbarian Elves vs. Wolfmen vs.  Telepathic Yetis vs. Hive-Mind All-Destroying Bugs happening against a political background filled with Chessmasters constantly trying to manipulate each other. It's fun.

3. Elantris, by Brandon Sanderson. Alternate Universe Fantasy. Plot's a little hard to explain in a few lines; but the book features intelligent protagonists and antagonists, a defined magic system, and some gorgeous character interactions between multiple people with different agendas.

4. The Stormlight Archive; Brandon Sanderson. Alternate Universe Fantasy (there's a trend here...). Again, Epic plot is complex to explain but it was thoroughly enjoyable. And wonderfully huge. And that was just the first book.

... and there's more, but i think my fingers are rebelling. XD Hope this helps.
