Macmillan Library Lending Embargo
« on: October 20, 2019, 05:24 AM »
I just read about this embargo this morning and am so surprised to have not seen anything anywhere other than my library!

It seems, Macmillan is starting an embargo on November 1 - they will limit e-book releases (to libraries) to just one copy for 8 weeks which is just a way to force customers to buy copies rather than borrow from libraries.

If this concerns you too - go here and read more about it. Be sure to sign the petition - tweet about it, write about it, send letters!

This embargo only hurts libraries and consumers in an attempt to put more money in the publisher's pocket, at reader's expense!

Really? Am I the only one worried about this and what it might mean to lending libraries in the future? I don't know if this embargo would impact Kindle's (Amazon's) lending library, or if it will spread to other publishers - but it could mean waiting MONTHS to get access to a new release through the library. How will this impact availability to kids books, or for low-income families?

That's a good point.

This may just encourage people to illegally download off the internet (which is more convenient because we don't have to return the book within a certain amount of day or weeks).

And, as you said, not everyone can afford to purchase new releases.  (Besides, a lot of romance novels aren't worth purchasing.  They're written so that the "hero" is abusive to the heroine throughout most of the book and just a page of "romance" is tacked on to the end of the story.  I'm not spending my hard-earned money buying those books!) :P

Dear Mr. Sargent, I am a library user who strongly opposes Macmillan’s policy to embargo newly released eBook titles for library lending. Please partner with libraries and provide them the means to introduce and recommend books and authors to readers like me. Allow libraries to purchase new titles at reasonable prices with no limitations.
Sincerely,
