So I'm feeling nosey/curious...
« on: August 21, 2012, 09:14 AM »
Since we all love books here I thought I might ask a few questions. Feel free to answer if you want. :) I'll give my answers in another post after this.

1. How many ebooks do you have? It doesn't have to be an exact number.

2. What are your favorite genre's to read and in what order?

3. How often do you read? 1 book per week, 3 a month, etc.

4. Do you judge a book by its cover? Don't lie!  :D

5. What kinds of books were your favorites as a child?

6. Do you have a favorite all time book? If so what is it?
I'm not a hoarder... Ok, maybe a digital hoarder. But that's not bad right?

Since we all love books here I thought I might ask a few questions. Feel free to answer if you want.  I'll give my answers in another post after this.

1. How many ebooks do you have? It doesn't have to be an exact number.

I have a little over 1,000 I think now

2. What are your favorite genre's to read and in what order?

True Crime is my favorite to read but since getting my Nook and getting free books I have learned to like Fiction again... (although I always have liked King, Steel, Grisham and Sparks)

3. How often do you read? 1 book per week, 3 a month, etc.
I read every single day, especially just before bed.  As far as how many??? I'm in the Goodreads challenge and I said 60 for the year and I am 7 above schedule.  Some take me a week or more, some have taken me a day or less

4. Do you judge a book by its cover? Don't lie!

Sadly yes...The cover tells a lot about the book I think

5. What kinds of books were your favorites as a child?

I began loving to read when I first read the "Little House on the Prairie" books

6. Do you have a favorite all time book? If so what is it?
My absolute favorite is The Wedding by Nicholas Sparks... don't know why I just love it.  Another that I often recommend to people is (and of course I am brain farting) the book by "Nellie Oleson" from Little House... it was excellent and a very fast read.  I also recommend for those my age (yes, I am 40!) Rob Lowe's book.

I'm not a hoarder... Ok, maybe a digital hoarder. But that's not bad right?

I purposely copied your signature because I had to laugh.  I am a COH (child of a hoarder; you know, like you see on TV) and I very much struggle because of that in many areas. When I started getting so many ebooks I went to my support group and I knew it sounded stupid, and I told them so but I was almost having panic attacks over "hoarding" ebooks.  They laughed at me and reassured me I'm not a hoarder in the literal sense of the word

I can completely relate to that. I grew up living with my mom/grandmother and my grandmother is a huge hoarder. They recently got rid of a lot of my grandmothers stuff and it was really hard on my mom due to dealing with my grandmother about it all. It can be very frustrating for sure. "i might need that one day"... etc..

While I have a massive amount of ebooks I don't feel anxious about it I guess because they are on the computer and not stacked up all around me. lol I can only imagine how I'd have to become a monkey or something if Had all 10,000+ of my books in my tiny apartment. :)

BTW I loved little house on the prairie books too! They rock!!!!

We COH's have a joke that although we can clearly see that our rooms are not pathways and are functional for their use (the test for a true hoarder) we will throw a cat toy down the hallway just to be sure!!  We're mental..lol  We have panic attacks about keeping things while hoarders have them over getting rid of them..lol

One of my cats is kinda chubby, ok he's fat. So I have to have clear room for him to waddle through. Don't want him getting stuck  :D No pathway for me!

So....

1. How many ebooks do you have? 30,000+ ebooks (do I sound like a hoarder or what?) and 500+ books. I've read over 2,000 of them

2. What are your favorite genres to read and in what order? fantasy (shapeshifters & witches) and romance (preferably romantic suspense or erotic)

3. How often do you read? 1 or 2 a night if in a reading 'mood' or 1 a week if not

4. Do you judge a book by its cover? yes!

5. What kinds of books were your favorites as a child? fantasy (fairy tales & witches)

6. Do you have a favorite all time book(s)? If so what is it? Robin McKinley's 'Beauty' AND Anne McCaffrey's Crystal Singer series (I know, I know... YA books)

Dusty do you have them all organized or are they just in one big folder?

Mine are not completely organized. I have a few folders I put them in. One for now as in I want to read it NOW. lol Another for later and then there is the calibre library folder that has all the ones I've put in there and updated covers/etc. I wish they were ALL in the calibre folder but with my carpal tunnel some days its hard enough on my wrist to just check emails and stuff!

When I first collected ebooks, I always get pdfs. and the files are organized by Author's name. And I also have another folder in which all the stand alones are there. But now that I hoard EPUBs, and convert it with calibre, I haven't organized it at all. :D

When I first started getting ebooks I got mainly .lit formats bc I was using only the lit reader at the time. I only had a few back then and would try to organize them in folders like chick lit, sci fi, etc. But now I have a teensy weensy bit more files to keep track of. lol So if it sounds SUPER good I put it in the now folder so I know if I am in a reading mood to get one from there. Otherwise I'd have to go typing authors names/titles into the interwebs to try to find out what some of the thousands are about to see if they suit my mood at the moment. lol

Oh, I forgot. I also have another folder called zombie love where I store all my zombie books lol

Mine are fairly organized in categories and sub categories ... sometimes by author; sometimes by series all on a flash drive (i.e memory stick or as my cousin calls it a thumb drive).  I actually try to organize them immediately now considering I had a mess when I first did it.  It's nice being able to find what I want in what area but I couldn't imagine with 30,000.

For those of you that use calibre, do you still keep separate copies in other folders? Once I add a book to  calibre I delete the file from wherever it was stored previously. I do however keep backups of all the book folders and the calibre library folders on two separate external HD's.

Actually when I used calibre first time, I just cut the converted file and transfer it to the folder of the author. But now, I don't do it anymore. Sometimes. :P

How many books do I have?

Probably about 5,000 books.  I am a hoarder.  I confess that I am building a library on my iPad.  I have bought a lot of books but have also received a lot of them free from sites that link to free ones on Amazon.  The last time I checked well over half of my collection is on my Kindle App.

What is my favourites genre?

I love mystery books especially those that have a medical component. Medical stories and biographies come a close second.  Then probably animal stories.

How many books do I read?

Probably I average about ten to fourteen books a week.  I am a fairly fast reader.  I also tend to re read my favourites.

Do I judge a book by it's cover?

Absolutely Yes!

What did I read as a child?

Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, Cherry Ames, Trixie Belden.

My all time favourites book?

Karen and With Love from Karen by Marie Killilea.  A true story about a girl with cerebral palsy.

I wish I could find these books in digital format as my paperback copies are musty and yellow and falling apart.  Actually I am trying to replace all of my hard copies of books but this is one I have been unable to find.
Please excuse any spelling errors.   I have dyslexic fingers!

Here are my answers :

1. How many ebooks do you have? It doesn't have to be an exact number.
I think it's between 1000 - 5000. I like collecting books and I always keep them. I don't delete them like I used to because I like re-reading them.

2. What are your favorite genre's to read and in what order?
I like paranormal, fantasy, historical, contemporary and most of all romance.

3. How often do you read? 1 book per week, 3 a month, etc.
I usually read 8 books or more per week. I'm a fast reader and it also depends on my free time.

4. Do you judge a book by its cover? Don't lie!
Yes. I used to judge books by their cover.

5. What kinds of books were your favorites as a child?
Well, I used to read adventure and fantasy books.

6. Do you have a favorite all time book? If so what is it?
My favorite would probably be the Malory - Anderson Series by Johanna Lindsey.

"People say that life is the thing, but I prefer reading."  ~Logan Pearsall Smith, Trivia, 1917
