The Do-Not-Fly Book List
« on: October 07, 2011, 03:07 PM »
OK, there are so many threads which are all about people's FAV things, but I want to dish some dirt and have a little rant fest.

So I thought, why not start a Do-Not-Fly list for books? Books that we, as readers, cannot tolerate to any degree at all. Ones we couldn't finish, couldn't help but finish because they were just that bad and ones which we feel the need to completely warn others off from.

What have you read that you feel needs to make this list?

You can rank them using this rating scheme if you want:

-1 star               :(                   I just didn't like it.
-2 stars             :o                   How did this go so wrong?
-3 stars             :'(                  (choked sob) It was horrible...
-4 stars             :-X                 Words cannot explain how bad this book was.
-5 stars             >:(                 I want to murder this book. It has pushed me to brink of insanity.

Which novels will make the list of STP's Most Hated? What book will be crowned STP's #1 Despised Book?
Stay tuned to find out...  :D

Hmm, I'm not totally dedicated to a specific genre or anything but I tend to drift towards YA, paranormal romance, contemporary romance, paranormal, urban fantasy, dystopia, etc. How about you?

yeah me either, i read just about anything but mostly romance, any, contemporary, modern, paranormal, fantasy, etc. as long as it's romance^^
hahahah :P

dystopia, what exactly is that about? obviously it's a genre lol

and care to recommend any really good ones to me? books!

Dystopia is a fiction genre about disorder or an non-ideal world. It can revolve around the apocalypse, the end of the world, sometimes has zombies or many other disastrous things, etc.

Examples would be:
  • The Hunger Series by Suzanne Collins
  • Divergent by Veronica Roth
  • Wither by Lauren DeStefano
  • Delirium by Lauren Oliver

Some books I loved from 2011 that I would recommend are:
  • Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout
  • The Demon Trappers Series by Jana Oliver
  • Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins
  • Deadly Cool by Gemma Halliday
  • Stupid & Contagious by Caprice Crane
And they all have at least a hint of romance in them :)

Entangled by Cat Clarke deserves so much more than just a BIG FAT -5.

I can't tell you how much i detest this book.  I felt violated after reading it....i wanted back all the time i had wasted reading it back.  The mc is a complete mess and her so called friend and bf is worst.  The story is told through a diary of days type.....Don't waste your time on this Horrible book.

Conquering Mikhel Dumont by Marilyn Lee (first book in the Bloodlust Series) and I'm not sure whether to rate it -4 or -5. It has to be the worst book ever and the author used some terms and created some scenes in there that shocked me and I love reading erotica and BDSM books so I'm not easily shocked. But at the same time it was so ridiculuos that I was laughing at how stupid everything sounded. Gotta say there is NO way I'm attempting to fish the book or to start on the other books in that series.

Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer
5 stars
The first three books are really actually kind of decent...you know, as long as you don't think too hard about them. Because when you think too hard about them you really start to realize things like...they sparkle? And...they don't have fangs?? What kind of vampire doesn't have fangs? And they're so reckless with their strength that they can't really have normal interactions with humans? But this book...yeah, this book. I abhor it. I truly do. From Bella guilt-tripping Edward into sleeping with her more, to the pregnancy, to the imprinting thing, and the cop-out with Bella not having to deal with the crazy new vampire-ness and the "epic battle" mostly involving them standing around while Bella creates a bubble around them with her mind...yeah, it was just bad. This book was awful. It was the worst thing that could have happened. The entire book was a cop-out. Ugh, just, ugh!

I'm sure I'm not the only one who agrees with you. I just finished watching the movie and I started to reread the book and had to put it down. I was okay with the whole wedding and what not but then came the vampire baby (come on really!) and things were going even more downhill. Don't even get me started on the "battle". I kept reading and was like "uh huh okay so more vampires good good now when do they fight?" They never do! ugh. Oh and in Twilight when she kept using the word chagrin, that was very annoying!

Prophecy of the Sisters - Michelle Zink - 5 stars
i cant believe i spent money and bought the actual book. i have never battled in all my life to get through a book as much as I did this. It took me nearly a year to finish it. the plot just dragged on and on and on. I found myself so confused at some points. cant believe she wrote 2 more books for this series.

This! I completely agree with! I just couldn't finish the first book. The main character is incredibly dull. Her evil sister was more interesting. And when an event happened (which was rare) she would explain the event in detail to... Every. Single. Character! We don't need to read it each and every time...those are just a few things that drove me up the wall. I read over half the book and just didn't care what happened to her. *shruggs*

Backstage pass was highly recommended by a facebook book club a while back but I still haven't read it.

I second Bitte by Kelley Armstrong, I would give it a -3 since I actually finished the book and I hated Elena all the way to end and even thought the author tried the redeem her in the last few pages of the book, I still hate her.

Serpent's Kiss by Thea Harrison was just so boring that I give it a -4. While I love this author the heroine of this book was boring I did not believe the romance between the leading couple.

The worst book ever written and after you read the first book Queen of Shadows by Diane Sylvan stop and think it's a stand alone. DO NOT READ book 2 Shadoflame which ruined one of the best romances I have ever read!!!!! Shadoflame has to be a negative -1000. The characters that I grew to love in Queen of Shadows completely changed in Shadow flame. Miranda and David fell inlove and you think that their love will only grow when book 2 comes in and ruins everything. It turns out that David is bisexual and still inlove with his former lover and cheats on Miranda while she is sleeping and recovering from a battle. Miranda can feel everything he is feeling since they are bonded through the signet that makes them king and Queen and in the end not only does Miranda forgive David but she accepts his relationship with the other man. THe other man declines it because she is still too human since she is a new vampire but when she looses her humanity maybe then David and his exlover can renew their love affair.

I just kept thinking the whole time WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH THE STORYLINE?! The author must be insane! seriously, how does she ruin a good couple like that? I personally haven't read it but now I WON'T even bother.

The author received very bad fan mail that she took her email address from all public view and she is about to release book 3 in this series. I personally think that Diane Sylvan was rude in some of her comments to people that did not like Shadoflame but I'm sure many fans were very rude too. I'm just upset that the characters from book 2 are nothing like the characters in book 1.

i stopped reading janet evanovich's plum series after 16 left me wanting. i felt like she was seriously screwing with her characters lives and she should just have stephanie choose one or the other. while i'm a babe (ranger) 100%, i could have understood her choosing morelli if she felt she loved him. but it is getting ridiculous, and from what i was told, she had stephanie sleep with both morelli and ranger while dating morelli. that's why i prefer fanfiction. at least that way i know it's going to end well. plus, with the plum fics, they're better. lol. the twilight ones are awesome simply b/c the ways those authors twist and turn the characters is awesome. some of them are truly gifted.

but another series that has gotten disappointing, is sherrilyn kenyon's dark hunter series. the last few have been kind of a letdown.

I stopped reading JR Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood just because of all the inconsistencies but I know it's still a very loved series to a lot of people.

It was also difficult for me to get accustomed to the style of writing of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, it is somewhat dry and the dialogues in the first book are horrible and primitive, but it gets better in other installments, and the plot and characters improve.

I agree but I think for me what was too much is how she has extended the Quinn and Blay relationship problems.

Erm, I know some probably liked this book... But I just can't seem to finish this or start it at all!
Blood Red Road by Moira Young, I give it a -1
I can't give it any higher than that because I seriously haven't finish it yet. I'm like in page 41 and I cannot seem to go on because I disliked the character already. Jeebus, I could shout Incest any minute just from her thoughts. And the way the character thinks of her own sister. I'm just pure disgust on the protagonists' personality right now.
I might come around to finishing it, because I rarely give up on a book. But I do not know if I'll end up liking it even when I do.
Just here for the gay, tbh.
