Author Topic: What are your favorite books in each genre? (Sept 26th- Oct 2nd: Dystopian)  (Read 12212 times)

Offline jessadia

I have seen several people asking for suggestions for books, so I thought maybe we could start a weekly thread where everyone can pop in and list their favorite book from a different genre every week. This week I thought we could start with Dystopian novels....they don't have to be strictly YA or Adult. Just list your favorites and maybe a reason why or a quick summary.

*I am going to include a poll at the top so everyone can vote for which genre to feature next week. (I included an "other" option...please specify in a post which genre. Thanks)

 Enjoy!! :)

  • ^if you got detention, that's the way you do it!
I just accidentally bump into this thread and dare myself to post something. (Good thing I have a cubicle here in the office)  :)

Got started with dystopian because of Hunger Games. I was cajole by some college friends. By that time I'm just reading anything that has a Vampire as major chars (yeah Twilight, BDB, Vampire Academy, House of Night etc) so I tried reading just to experiment. And here's an honest answer, I didn't like it. Oh I adore the first book but the rest is a no-no.... dont bash me for this. So here's my List:

1. Hunger Games - because it started it all, if it wasn't for it, i'll be living drowning myself with Nicholas Sparks books and anything paranormal with vampires on it forever

2. Divergent - its out of curiosity because of the title and i wasnt put down when i read it especially the sequel

3. Uglies - because i believe nothing separates us more than our physical appearance and this series directly points it out, and the best thing is the emphasis of free choice - which is one of the themes... I just love those "you and me against the world scenes"  :D

4. Chaos Walking Trilogy - i have a love/hate relationship for this book, its like chocolate, you have to put it down because too much is bad for you but despite of the fact, you continuously desire it. There are lots of times that I almost throw my eReader by just reading but i continued because I crave for more. I have this unique "feelings" for books - those I would like to put down but end up continuing, they end up as one of my favorites.

5. Unwind - it was disturbing because it can be possible, I got chills on my spine for reading this...  :o

Those who are below the top 5 in the list:
Enclave
Mazerunner
Battle Royale (watched the movie first)

Wrath to Butch: That's you. You shall be called the Black Dagger warrior Dhestroyer....
Rhage: But you'll always be Butch to us, as well as hard-ass. Smart-ass. Royal pain in the ass... I think as long as there's an ASS in there, it'll be accurate.
Zhadist: How about bASStard?

^LOL :P

I absolutely LOVED Maze Runner and that so far has been my most fave Dystopian :)

I have read the Maze Runner too, but I don't know if I actually liked it. Finished all three books. There was a time that I just need to put down the book three for awhile and after a few days or weeks, I'll read it again. :3 But I like the idea of the story. I like Newt. :3 and Minho.  ^-^

I've read most of the books that have been mentioned and love them all.

I must say that "The Giver" is an excellent book and I'm about to read the second and third books in the series.

Unwind and Unwholly (and there's a short story that comes between the two ... can't remember the name at the moment) - WOW, if you haven't read them I can't recommend them highly enough.  Unwind, especially, will have you thinking about it for weeks after you've read it ... excellent (though frightening) read.

Holy Crap, I am so glad I found this post! I had read The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey and it got me hooked on Dystopia! I really thought I would not like this kind of book, and then I read that and found how wrong I was..lol! I have read the Maze Runner series and I was disappointed with the ending. I am now reading The Ashfall series. So far it is ok. I also LOVED Midnight City by J. Barton Mitchell. I am glad I found this thread because I REALLY needed some good ideas on some other books in this genera. Some that I have seen like The Uglies just do not look all that good to me. I like things that have a good story for why things went the way they did. Thanks for all the ideas!  :-*

The 5th Wave was amazing! The only downside is now having to wait so long for the next in the series.

Oh Man it was good, wasn't it  :iagree: !? It was my real first dystopian read. I had read Terry Brooks The Word and Void but it had a fantasy quality about it. But these books like The 5th Wave were totally creepy! Waiting sucks so bad  :banghead: ! I have to wait for the next book in Midnight City series also. I was reading Ashfall series, but book 2 is kinda moving slow for me. I also just finished Ashes, Ashes by Jo Treggiari and it was ok, could have been alot better. In your opinion Ereaderuser, do you know any other dystopian books that follow the same line as 5th Wave? I have been trying to find something similar but can not. The Maze Runner series was pretty good but dang, it seemed like those poor kids didn't get a second to rest at all! I was exhausted just reading it..lmao!  :D I read the book description on the series The Uglies and I didn't think I would like it at all. Seemed kinda goofy to me.  :P
