Dissapointed in Kobo Arc 7HD
« on: November 15, 2014, 08:08 PM »
I've decided to buy an ereader/tablet after several years of reading on a regular tablet (Acer Iconia, very sturdy and very reliable).
I decided to buy the Kobo Arc 7HD, a tablet but also an ereader (the LCD screen has a new technology called IPS that allows reading in direct sunlight). It has a beautiful feature to sort books into libraries, save articles for offline readings. This is what convinced me.

Unfortunately not even 48 hours after removing it from its box the screen cracked. I don't know why or how, but I can asure you I handle my electronics very carefully. I'm taking it back to Future Shop first thing tomorrow. And apparently there are several people stating their Kobos broke without a reason.

The question is: do I replace it or buy something else? Do I buy extended warranty for the next 2 years in case something happens in the future?

What is your experience with Kobo ereaders?

1stly, there is no point in purchasing the retailer warranty with any tablet or eReader as you get a 2 years manufacturers warranty with your device straight out of the box plus you also get a 1 year retailers warranty with any electronic device as standard.  If this has been happening with other Kobo Arc 7 HD owners I would recommend you getting your money back or purchase a different brand eReader.  As there is obliviously a design flaw with the device.

Personally, I avoid Kobo like the plague the fact that you have to use their own Kobo app for transferring books to your device is a big inconvenience.  Personally, I would recommend you get a Sony eReader if you can.  I have 2 of them and they both are a very high quality build.

I have a Kobo Aura H20. Now I know you are talking about a tablet version, but my ereaders are NEVER tablets, I cant read on an LCD screen, I want it to look like a book. I love my Kobo. and no you don't have to side-load your books with their app, I don't know who told you that, I use Calibre for all my ereaders, I had a nook, and got disappointed with them, and got a Kindle which is okay, and then I got a Kobo, and all of my ereaders I just use Calibre for all my book management purposes. But yes you can load books with Calibre on to the Kobo, I actually really like my Kobo out of all three brands Ive had.

I have a Kobo Aura. It was a defective item , straight out of the box! Couldnt even charge or turn on. i got a replacement item from the retailer.

Then I had to trial-and -error on how to load books onto the ereader. The instructions werent very clear ( to me anyway). Then I find out that I had to manually sort all the books loaed into collections by author name, otherwise it would be impossible to find the books.

It took me 4 mths b4 I started using my kobo Aura! And then, only when my iPad went "kaput" and I had no choice.

Now I am used to it but it took some getting used to. It is not very user friendly; has a lagged response time; have to sync the ereader to deskstop everytime after I load books or the books will not open.

All in all, the only plus the Aura has going for it is e-ink and nice size which fits in my palm. Otherwise, reading on my iPad mini is better. And to tell truth, it feels so flimsy and freezes so often, I wouldnt be surprise if the ereader goes "kaput" soon!

My advice is to avoid Kobo products.

I had the arc,  it died after about 3 years of solid use.   I had a Kobo touch before that and along side that,  it lasted 5 years, and started getting tired,   I Now have the H2O Aura, and love it,  Have had this about 1 year,

I miss the arc, but I will get another tablet of some kind,

I am not a complete idiot, some parts are missing    :)
