The Kindle Fire can read epub files, but you have to download and install Aldiko from the amazon marketplace first.  It can read .mobi and amazon's own ebook format right of the bat.

You aren't the only one with that problem.  I was curious and I googled it.  Many users are complaining they can't see it in the app store.

I haven't tried fbreader but I like Mantano Lite (the free version). It gives 2 column layout in landscape. I have used it on the original Fire and the 2nd gen (non HD) Fire.

well I did a search for that one and couldn't find the right apk. it only showed the paid app for me on Amazon, but I found an apk for fbreader and it is up and running!

so fbreader WORKS PERFECTLY on the Kindle Fire 2nd. gen  :-* :)

Good to know, I'll be trying it. I want to get the 8.9 Fire but until then, my dd's 2nd gen Fire is very nice!

Tried FBreader. It didn't really work for me. I use Sugarsync to download books wirelessly to the Fire. The books would open, but they would disappear when I tried to find them later. I find Aldiko works much better the way I add books. Maybe it would work better if I were loading via USB. I just downloaded three dozen books, and they were right where they were supposed to be. With FBreader, if I excited the program, and then went back, the books were nowhere to be found, except 1. I don't know why that one was still there!
