Which E-reader are you using?
« on: October 13, 2011, 11:48 PM »
Hi, I wanted to know what is the most bought e-reader and the best place to do so is... here :D

If you have comments or like to expand more about your selection or the reasons - you're welcome! Your experience might help other users when they consider buying an e-reader. By the way, if you have two or more different e-readers you're certainly encouraged to vote for each of them! 8)  (Yes, the vote limit was modified. Much thanks to Mr. Admin!)

Any comments about the poll are also welcome.

All the best and thanks! :)

Hi, All.

My first ereader purchase was a Sony ereader. It was black and white and couldn't download magazines. It was great for my original purpose-to house acadermic articles. But now that my graduate program has completed, I became enamored with "color" and the paper saving options of having my magazines delivered electronically and was gifted the nook tablet. That said, I have books that I purchased through Sony that I'd like to convert to epub, so that I can read them on my Nook. Is that possible? I also purchased one ebook from Kindle and have an ebook certificate from Amazon, but since I have a Nook, I am hesitant to use it unless I can convert the files to read on my Sony and Nook. Can anyone offer some advice? Could the oft-mentioned Calibre help me?

Thanks very much,
Kit

I have the Nook color and use Calibre all the time. Some of the books come out of the conversion with no paragraph breaks or letters missing, but that might be that I have not spent the time to figure out all Cilbre has to offer. I just convert the book and read. I also use Calibre as my library and now have hondreds and hundreds of books in it. Good luck.

Yes, you can convert the books you have purchased for your Sony Reader to epub with Calibre.  But you will have to remove the DRM code from the books first using DRM removal software, which you can easily find on the net.

Do you have a suggestion as to which DRM removal software to use?

I cann't think of any of hand, but since DRM protection software is constantly getting upgrade in order to stay ahead of online piracy it's hard to think of any of hand.  The best thing to do would be to do some online research into DRM removal software.  Anything up-to-date at the moment will probably remove the DRM protection from your Sony Reader books pretty easily if you purchase your books a while back.  I will ask some of my friends and see if they can recommend any good DRM removal software for you.

I finally decided and got myself a Kindle Keyboard and it freaking arrived in 3 days (8000 miles)! I'm loving it so far.

So my husband got me a Nook Simple Touch with Glowlight for Mother's Day. I finally charged it and started using it a couple days ago. I've been using my Original 3G Nook (first edition) for daytime reading and a Nookcolor for night reading. That system was fine and I enjoyed both devices.

Now I'm totally sold on the Simple Touch. It is very lightweight. And it is super easy to hold because the case is made of this soft rubbery plastic that's easy to grip. And I can use it in daylight or at night. I'm afraid I won't bother with the "oldies" now.

Hi!

I've been reading ebooks the past 1-2 years mostly on my laptop (Not good for my eyes!), and have just bought a Kindle Keyboard last week!!  So far so good!  Bought the version with 3G and love it!  I'm in Bangkok and was amazed when my research showed that the free 3G service works here too :D  And yes, having used it, the 3G works great for me in actual fact!

Am working out how to organise books on the Kindle though, any advice please.. please..?!

Why Kindle Keyboard for me?
I didn't know much about Nook and Sony or the other eReaders, but Kindle seemed to have great book selections and great reviews in general, long battery life, and are known for the non-backlit e-ink screens.   Was debating between Kindle Touch vs Kindle Keyboard, and decided on the keyboard at the last minute because
1) found out that for 3G, the kindle keyboard isn't limited to three sites! (unlike kindle touch)
(note that using Wifi you can go to any sites you want so this is not that big a deal)
2) the keyboard was a place to put my thumbs when holding the reader - doesn't sound important, but for me when I am going to be holding something for long periods, it's a potential irritation factor that could drive me nuts!

i want to tell you all my very sad story and share my pain, because my hubby just rolls his eyes at me. (lol)

So my husband got me a kobo, (1st version) 2 Christmases ago, because he's an angel, but not even a year later it broke. I don't know what happened; it looks like someone stepped on it, but that is kind of odd, since it was in my bag when it broke....

anyhow, then to show me how much he really loved, my husband again bought another one, this time a touch, for christmas again.
LO and Behold: it broke again, in march this time!!  :'(this time from some defect or what not.
So, i thought I'd get it replaced using the warranty, but at the time, the receipt was thought to be in his car, which was at the shop... so i don't even bother to look for it. Turns out it is not in the car and some easy place to find it. :(

of course, i have my trusty laptop, but that is not easy to haul around when I'm just out and about. and even worse, i haven't had time to read for the last couple of weeks.

GAAAAHH, I want my kobo back!!!

so, this is my story, share my pain Lol

I've been researching for the perfect e-reader for weeks before finally purchasing my own,  :) but there is no "perfect" ereader,  :D choose the one that caters to your needs.  :) so I've been debating about kindle touch or nook touch. I like the home page of nook vs kindle. and i really like how it looks but i've heard that it's better to read pdf files with the kindle (I read pdf files most of the time) because of its zooming capabilities and now it also has a landscape mode thanks to the software update just recently. So i got myself a kindle touch, it's small and I've been using it since I got it  ;) i love it  :-*

The Sony range of ereaders are really good, I have the Sony PRS-350 and it is a very good eBook reader.  You can high passages and make notes in pages.  The newer PRS-T1 model is currently available.

I use my IPad and IPhone to read. Alternating between the Kindle and IBooks apps. Because of that, I don't have the need to buy a Kindle or a Nook although I did consider purchasing them a while ago.

I am totally off topic here, But Jeez your photo is HOT as Freaking HOT. Just sayin' ;)

I use the Nook simple touch. :-* I like it, but it makes it kind of difficult to do other things, like Netflix or playing angry birds on long trips without completely draining the battery on my smartphone. Dnt get me wrong, I love my nook, but I'm seriously searching for a nice used Nook color or tablet, just so I dnt look like one of those tech heads.  :)

You could always get a cheap android tablet, there are probably widely available in your local high street electronics retailer or supermarket.

What you didn't mention is the fact that EVERY major ereader also has the same features (highlight and notes). Not to mention the fact that the Sony eReaders cost a third again as much as the Nook Simple Touch or Kindle Touch. I've got the Kindle Touch and I'm loving it so far. If it ever breaks though, I'll be buying the Nook Glow to replace it. That light and battery life (double that of KT, or the same if you keep the light on nonstop) is simply amazing.

I think you can use the OverDrive Media Console App to read Epubs on the Blackberry

Besides iPad (iBooks, Bluefire), also using my old, trusty Sony Ericsson P990i (Mobipocket Reader) and iPhone 3G (Stanza) so that when one is out of juice, I can continue reading on another device - 3 different books at a time.
