Which E-reader are you using?
« on: October 13, 2011, 11:48 PM »
Hi, I wanted to know what is the most bought e-reader and the best place to do so is... here :D

If you have comments or like to expand more about your selection or the reasons - you're welcome! Your experience might help other users when they consider buying an e-reader. By the way, if you have two or more different e-readers you're certainly encouraged to vote for each of them! 8)  (Yes, the vote limit was modified. Much thanks to Mr. Admin!)

Any comments about the poll are also welcome.

All the best and thanks! :)

I currently own and use a Kindle Paperwhite, a Kindle Keyboard, two Sony T1's. I also use my daughter's Kindle Fire (2nd gen non-HD). I am waiting for another sale on the Fire HD 8.9. I had the original Fire but the 2nd gen was so much better, I sold the first. I got my other daughter a Lenovo A2107 but I like the Fire better.

I have a Sony PRS T-1 and I love it to no end! It's my first e-reader though. I read all my fics on it - PDF and EPUB. In combination with Calibre - it's a dream! It goes everywhere with me.

I am using a Kobo Glo and loving it. It is great for reading in dim lighting and is easy on the eyes. I used to own the first Kobo and there were too many problems with it so I went with Kindle for a while but couldn't get the paperwhite and wanted a front lit screen so ordered the Kobo Glo. The paperwhite might be better but not having tried it this one is great.

I just got my first e-reader yesterday!!!!! My brother thought I looked like a lunatic with the big smile I had all day long!
I got the Nook HD and so far I am IN LOVE WITH IT!  ^-^
When I tried to add all my books through the USB cable it would not let me open them! But through more exploration, I found that putting my already bought ebooks in a sd card and jamming them into the Nook is what did the trick.  :P I'm still exploring around (but mainly reading all my books) and I hope that I stay in love with it. We'll see...

So many people I know use ereaders but I don't understand the draw. An android or ipad can read books and do a number of other things as well and the prices can be as low as $100 for a Lepan (a great machine BTW) versus a Kindle Fire HD 8.9" 4G LTE at $499. Shop around and get something that does more than just read books---your kids will thank you too (great for entertaining your little ones as well as yourself--there are TONS of free gaming apps out there). Add a Kindle app and it sends your purchases directly to your device (no loading or fiddling) or you can install a epub reader like Aldiko (love this app) for your other collections. Get one the size that you find comfortable for reading (range in size from cell phone 3-4 inch to 10 inch tablets).

If you read for extended periods a tablet screen is hard on the eyes. I can read for hours on an e-ink reader. To me it is no different than reading a paperback book except for being able to carry several at a time and not have to dust shelves.

Just traded my kindle keyboard for a kindle paperwhite. Best decision ever! I love the back light and how you can adjust it to suit your need of how much light you need. The book cover showing instead of a list is an added bonus for a freak OC like me  >:D :D
Because it would be a sad world without books!!!

I badly wanted a paperwhite but couldn't get it in Canada so I got a Kobo Glo. I am wondering if there is much difference? They now have them available in Canada but it would be an expensive compulsion to have both.  :-\

Personally, I wouldn't bother as you can use calibre to convert kindle books to epub.  But if you don't like the Kobo Glo, then I would recommend you selling it and getting another eReader from a different manufacturer.

I love the Kobo Glo but having been a previous Kindle owner I really wanted the paperwhite when it first came out and so although I am happy with the Glo I am still tempted by the PW now that it is available here.  I will probably stick with the Glo unless it starts giving me problems. I think Kindle is more reliable than Kobo but so far so good.

Kindle Fire is not an ereader though. It's a tablet. I agree with the comparison between iPad and other tablets as far as price and features. If we are talking about e-readers vs. tablets, two different things.

E-readers are specifically designed for reading. Not for web browsing, apps, games or whatever else. I know.. seems kind of boring then when you're paying $120 for something that doesn't browse or have games and/or video like a $100 tablet. But for readers, it's great when you get to deal with e-ink screens and sensitive eyes. That's the main draw, besides not having the distraction of apps, games, videos, browsing, etc... :)

And I also want to add... because I'm a huge reader along with others here... there's nothing wrong with a device that does nothing but simply let you read. Kids these days have so many devices to access games, videos, etc. I would rather give my kid an e-reader that promotes him to read thousands of books on it rather than a tablet that makes him want to play angry birds while we're out dining at a restaurant as a family or whatever. Reading does count, to me, as entertainment ;)

I think devices that let you move around the internet have given me a shorter attention span. I have even found with reading on an ereader that I will suddenly wonder what I am missing and want to "click". In the old days (before web surfing) I could read for hours without distraction. Ereaders help with this somewhat but I still don't read as long before wandering over to the laptop to see what's up.

I have a Kindle Touch and have been using it for over a year now. It is my first e-reader and I love it! I was always an avid reader, but I bought only a few books over the last few years, simply because of limited shelf space. Plus, I prefer to read English books that are expensive to buy in my country and there is only a limited selection. Kindle solved all these troubles!
As for the advantage of e-readers over tablets, I have also a Samsung tablet that is quite heavy, the LCD screen is not good for my eyes and the various apps and internet are a distraction I dont like while reading.
One big advantage of e-readers with e-ink is also very low power consumption, you can use it for weeks without recharging. :-*

ooh. Okay. I think we all established that e-readers and Tablets are not the same. They got huge difference between each other that I could probably enumerate but since I am a lazy one and doesn't want you all to get bored with my facts... I'm not going to. :D

I do have Samsung Galaxy Tablet. The first generation one. 10.1". It's not really advisable to do your reading there since, One, the battery dries up faster. Two, lots of distraction since you could either play games or go online and could install lots of apps. Third, did I say that it's large? so I can't bring it to my office or read while I'm traveling. And last but not the least, my brothers are always borrowing it.

But hopefully, this March, I'll be able to order Kindle Paperwhite. :azn: can't wait to get my hands on it. :)

Look at Lex, showing off her big brain again  :D

But yeah, tablets aren't very good for reading especially if you are reading plain black and white text.  The screen on a tablet is more suited for multimedia work and the like as Lex said.

True! It'll strain your eyes if you use tablets for reading. :o
