Which eReader is better?
« on: April 26, 2011, 04:12 AM »
I've been thinking about buying an 'eReader' because I changed sides and now I'm an eco-friendly bookworm although I don't hold anything against people who buy actual books.
Well, I was just wondering which is better: the Amazon Kindle or the Sony Reader?
Thanks! :)

I have both. Had a Sony first then got a Kindle a year later. Sony has a better design. Touch screen is great but the glare on the screen is terrible. Not good for reading outside. The Kindle wins because of ease of use. Also Amazon customer service. Kindle comes with one year warranty so if it is defective they will replace it. With Sony, if it is defective you are stuck with it. And the Kindle really is like having an actual book. It's just all around easier to use.

I have a Nook, it's a WiFi and I received it for Christmas. I'm really happy with it, I just want to read books on it, nothing else. I have a NetBook for everything else. I have converted all my recipes over to PDF's and put them on my Nook. I bought a cool case for it with an easel on the back, I use it as my cookbook. I like having a way to take my library at home with me when I travel. It's a lot different than taking 20 books with me for a long vacation!

My daughter has a Kindle and likes it. She likes reading on her phone the exact same book and same place that she was reading on the Kindle. I do not think that Nook can do that, but, I wouldn't really read anything on my phone anyway.

Nook can do that, as long as you have the Nook app on your phone :) I have that feature also. I can read on the computer if I want, then switch to the Nook or my iPhone, and never lose my place. it automatically updates your spot for you. I love it.

Thank you! I had no idea that it was like that. I have installed the app. Just got a new phone a few weeks ago and didn't remember to install it.

I have a kindle.  I've never had another e-reader, but I can tell you what I like about the Kindle.

1.  Customer support is great.  You get a free email account at amazon and by sending your various files (i.e. RTF,. PDF, TXT,  MOBI) files to your free email account, and typing "convert" in the RE line, within a couple of minutes you get your file back, converted to AZW.

2.  The Kindle reads several kinds of files - not epub - but many others.

3.  You can do screen shots with it.  Not sure if you can do that with the other reader.

4.  Collections are very easy to manage if you use Calibre

5.  If you drive a lot, you will love it.  I plug mine into my car stereo and it reads to me when I drive.

6.  You can use yahoo IM with Kindle

7.  Kindle has a web browser.

You should also check out the link below.  It shows you all the other things that are available to the Kindle.

Another cool feature w/ Kindle is that you can link it to your Twitter or Facebook account and send passages from the book you are reading to your facebook account, which is really fun. You can also send a post when you finish reading a book. And the battery last 2 weeks to a month between charges. Mine, which I use almost everyday, I only charge every 3 weeks. It also has enough memory for 3500 books.

I have a Kindle and love it.  Lots of free books rotating in and out on Amazon. Great customer support. Long battery life. Super easy interface. Good quality.

My mother has a Kobo and I would not recommend it. Doesn't compare to the Kindle at all.

I bought a Sharper Image (they disavow any connection, except 'leasing?'name to Merch) Literati .I know this because I called NYC Sharper Image Office. I always had minor troubles, needed a reset often, had to jiggle charging wire, but thought hey it still works, until first week of August. All my books disappeared from shelves, still in there but can't access them.Tried to contact them via their website message will not send. Called number repeatedly, only take calls between 3-6 PST and finally got someone who promised to send out box for return for repair,I asked how long to fix,he said six weeks.Still have not received box. Got on website where people talked about them and Coinin said he was going to BBB How dumb was I .Contacted BBB with complaint and Merch promised replacement, still waiting.Avoid Literati!!!! And check out how people rate your choice first.I heard Kindle is great, will look further but might be my next.

I've been using the sony ereader (touchscreen) for a couple of years now. It is the first ereader that I bought. Considered the kindle, but wasnt too sure of the support available (am not based in US) and therefore chose to go with sony. Not having had anything to compare it with I've become used to it but am also familiar with the cons of the device.
Battery life not as good as promised. I am an avid reader and battery defin does not last one full week atleast for me.
Glare from the screen has been mentioned a number of times.
Expansion slots are available, however the interface becomes slightly sluggish on using a larger memory card/chip.
The screen has become spotty, not too sure how. The customer service ppl mentioned it might be due to moisture. Replacement cost was prohibitive specially as they do not have a service centre in my country.
Thinking of a replacement soon and looking at different options at the moment.

ME too!!!  I picked mine up on Ebay for $50, lol.  The only thing I don't like about it is that it's a bit heavier than I wanted.  I wish it weighed as much as the new nook.

I have the new pandigital Nova.  it is about 170.00 from best buy.  runs android 2.34 outta the box.  comes with Barnes and noble ereader software preloaded, but I also have Kindle for android on it.  kinda get the best of both worlds, only thing I recommend is get an Anti glare screen protector if you want to read in bright daylight.   comes with 4gb internal memory but also accepts a 32 gb mini sd to expand your memory.   I love it.
