I have not encountered any new problems with the updated fic downloader on calibre and I use it all the time. I haven't updated to the newest version of calibre, just the plugin so maybe that's where your issue lies?

I was wondering if anybody had a solution to getting good epub files from fics in pdf form. I read fics on my kindle almost exclusively thanks to calibre, but am encountering a problem. Specifically, CaraNo's fics are only offered in pdfs and they all look terrible when you convert them from pdf into epub on calibre. Any fixes to this? or any way someone has been able to read CaraNo's fics in epub?

I've tried enabling heuristic processing, and changing some features under layout, but it seems no matter what i do there are weird breaks between sentences. Calibre is somehow reading new paragraphs in the middle of sentences and it basically makes reading impossible.

I convert the PDF to word and follow the steps here: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login  Can be a bit time consuming at times, but it works.

Does anyone have a copy of ALL of CaraNo's fics but ONLY in epub? I know she has all of them available for download in pdf, but when you convert those pdfs to epub through calibre, they are seriously messed up. If anyone has been able to make good epubs out of them, I'd be so grateful for that share!

P.s. sorry if this isn't allowed, I know that technically these fics are available to all of us, but I can't read any of them on my kindle!  :)

Try this website. It's what I use for all my converting. I just used it on one of her stories and it came out pretty good. I wish you luck!  :)

Hey guys,
So recently I downloaded the fanfic.net app, and have several stories downloaded onto the app. However when coming to transfer all he titles to Calibre, I realised that one has been removed. Is there any known way of downloading the stories (which no longer exists on fanfic.net) from the app to calibre?

Just a heads up for everyone:

I had my son help me with transferring/formatting fanfiction stories to PDFs and he led me to an awesome site called FF2EBOOK.com. All you have to do is copy/paste the url's to the window supplied, and it opens up another tab to download the story to ePub, then open in whatever ereader you like. Easy peasy!

Ellachanted- I am trying to download your Calibre library and wondered what version you made and saved it in? I downloaded it and then opened with Calibre 3 and it did not work... Any ideas?  Thank you so much for posting your library!!

New FicLab Release (v0.6.x) / Feedback
« Reply #188 on: August 28, 2019, 03:31 AM »
Hi All,

I have finally released the new version of FicLab onto the Chrome and Firefox webstores a few days ago (current version is 0.6.47), and would be keen to get some feedback about how you guys are finding it to use - I'm aware there are a number of users of my software here who are not involved with either the mailing list or the Slack group for it (although you're absolutely welcome over there too).

The biggest points I'm wanting to check in about are:

  • How do you find the user experience? Is everything straightforward, or does something confuse you?
  • Are you happy with the output? Is there anything about the formatting that bugs you?
  • Are you happy with the cover images?
  • Are there any major sites which you guys use, which I do not You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login?

Feel free to chip in with any other feedback that you think it would be useful for me to know :-).

Cheers,
Steve

If anyone wants to read stories on kindle but only have them in pdf version all you have to do is send it to your kindle using your email but in the subject line of email should be written "convert". This way Kindle will convert pdf to kindle format and then you change the size of the letters and other things that are available when you read mobi version.

the plugin fanficfare isn't updating through calibre. I was reading up on it and it seems they are doing something over on fictionpress. Also someone was saying they got DDOSed. there isn't a fix jimmy is hoping it clears up after they are done doing whatever to fictionpress. also someone was saying they had the same issues with fictiondownloader.

What are some url downloaders I can use I don’t have a computer all I have is an iPad and an iPhone so I’m kind of limited. I used to use Ficsave and ff2ebook those two were the best and easiest to work on my iPad/iPhone in the last week those two sites seem to have stopped working.

I can confirm that FicLab is currently working OK, and still able to download from ffnet / fictionpress.

Rinoa1799 (re above suggestion): FicLab is a browser extension - it won't run on the iOS mobile devices that you have. If you have an Android device though, while I don't officially support Android, it's possible to load the extension in Kiwi Browser, and that generally works fine.

Ffnet is making some big changes to their infrastructure currently, including migrating at least some of their stuff onto Cloudflare. As a result, many downloaders will be affected, and anything that uses a central server to fetch things is most likely to be either severely limited or completely out of luck.

FicLab uses the client browser to download chapters, so it should be OK with these changes. I do recommend you download one story at a time though. If you experience a "fetch error", just refresh the page - Cloudflare may ask you to complete a CAPTCHA (should not be more often than once in 24 hours). If this doesn't sort it, please send me a message via the contact form on You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login.

Please note also that ffnet's latest shenanigans affected FicLab's ability to grab cover images. I've implemented a workaround in v0.6.58, which is live for Firefox as of a few minutes ago, and will be live for Chrome as soon as Google finishes reviewing it is now also live for Chrome.

Which version are you using? It should definitely be working. The latest version is v0.6.58.

When you say it's not working for you - what exactly is going wrong?

Thank you for your reply

I checked and was told I was up todate with "Google Chrome is up to date
Version 87.0.4280.88 (Official Build) (64-bit)".  I don't get a title and I am not sure the whole fic has been downloaded.

I should have been clearer sorry - I meant, which version of FicLab are you using? The version is displayed in the top bar of the FicLab popup.

When you say you don't get a title - what happens instead?

Do you see any error messages?

Do you have an example of a story URL that fails to download correctly?

Thanks - that is extremely odd. I've just tested it with that story, and it worked perfectly. The title and author were correct, and the website story was downloaded.

Could you please provide a screenshot of the FicLab popup on that story page immediately before clicking the "download" button?
