So I've been dealing with fanfic authors who are positive we've violated their copyright (even though their fanfiction is using characters copyrighted by someone else, who started their fanfiction using another author's copyrighted characters!), and feel terribly wronged that their fans want to keep copies of the fanfiction.

Then I come across a P&P fanfiction that sounds interesting, only to find that this author only posted the first 3 chapters of her not yet published P&P fanfiction in order to entice you to order her book! You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

Some days I'm not sure who is using who here!  Readers feel used and discarded when authors pull their fics, authors feel "violated" when readers want to keep copies of the fanfiction they loved (despite the fact they want those same betrayed readers to buy and promote the stories they now plan to publish).  Then you have the authors who tease by not completing the fics on-line, but requiring readers to purchase their book if they wish to finish the story.

Based on most of the feedback I get here, fanfiction readers are just as likely to buy the published versions even if they have the fanfiction version (assuming the author doesn't piss them off) because they want to support the authors they love.  I've done it a number of times myself.

Ok, rant over.  I cannot give this information directly to the authors I heard from this weekend because they probably wouldn't agree, would argue with me, and just generally get their backs up, and I don't have the time or energy to deal with them.  But, even E.L. James had to back off a bit on her "copyright" crusade because of the origins of the story.

Feel free to pat me on the head and say, "This, too, will pass."  Or, better yet, just agree with me to make me feel better.  Even if you don't.

Well said. These authors forget where they come from. They were born and raised in this ‘hood, and embarrassed by us/what to disassociate themselves from us when potential financial success comes calling.
Double edged sword, no doubt.
Most of us do buy p2p fics, and they need to remember, they will write more books and will need us to buy those.

Yes.

As far as I'm concerned, if you've written something and released it - to a local paper, a blog, a FF site, whatever - it's not going back in the bottle: it's published. I see politicians doing this too. Once it is posted, it's not really "yours" anymore. You can request that people not share your stories, but we aren't talking about a copyrighted novel, so you don't really have a leg to stand on. If you released it as FF, be glad that you got supported enough to be able to show your clicks as to why a publisher should take you on... and say thank you to your original fans.

Hate the most - unfinished work or splitting a book into several installments  >:(

It is now my habit to read the last chapter of any FF or published work before I start reading something. Nothing like getting to the end of a fic for it to say, "Sorry, I didn't know how to end it, so I'm marking this as complete, and the sequel is now up!" SMH.

I have no problem with trilogies (or similar situations) where you know in advance that this is a part of a whole, but lazy writing is something else. Even serials (which I avoid like the plague) let you know in advance that the "story" will essentially be incomplete because it will be continuing.

Tangent: same loss of rules and standards with "romance" as a category these days. When your hero/ine spend all this time falling and being in love, but wind up without an HEA...  :violent-smiley-007:

That's tragic, not romantic.

I am currently reading Spellbound Heart by thepinkcupcake.  Dumbledore sends Harry Potter to stay with the Cullens.  Bella Black (daughter of Vampire Sirius Black and a Veela).  So Bella is half veela and half vampire and all witch.  Because of course she is very powerful and everybody loves her.  It is a little annoying at times.  Anyway, they are mates and the Cullens join the magical world of Harry Potter.  I think the original character was named Lainey?  Every so often Bella's name changes to Laine or Lainey.  Seems like this was an OC with Edward, or maybe Cedric LOL! I actually get the impression she doesn't really like the Cullens.  I like Harry Potter stories enough that it only bothers me a little. I haven't finished it yet, so I only can guess how it ends based on Harry Potter.  It takes place during the year Harry, Hermione, and Ron are looking for the horcruxes. So I'm guessing it ends with the big fight.  Though Sirius should have been dead at this point.  Then again he wasn't a vampire in the real books.

I have to find my other Kindle for more.

Edited - Spellbound Heart kind of leaves you hanging.  There is a sequel, but it only has 9 chapters and is not complete.  So I am not sure I would recommend it.  :P

I liked Spellbound Heart well enough, thanks for the mention. I didn't bother with the sequel. The read reminded me and led me to a reread of the crossover Pure Perfection by Daphodill that I remembered enjoying. So that was fun. ;)

Have you read any good P&P fanfic recently?  My old reader died months ago, but I think my husband may be bringing a new one home from his latest business trip, so I'll actually be able to read again (just in time for the kids going back to school)

I have purchased original fiction from fanfic authors I like.  It is like the now famous elementary school lesson on what the internet is, once it is out there, you have no more control over it.

Adding Summaries in the Index

Hi! I read something about some people trying to start adding summaries to the stories in the Index. I was wondering if that ever happened or if there is some effort going on to do it?

Well, P&P is out of copyright and my niece has been buying P&P based stories for years, but not really calling them fanfiction.   However, I think it is really rude to put a part of a story on fanfiction.net and then make someone buy the ending.  It reminds me of Silverblossoms who did that a lot.  After the first time she did it, I refused to read anymore of her stories.  I will buy stories of writers who I want to support, even if I never read the non-fanfic version.

But any fanfiction of in-copyright stories? Yeah, they have no copyright and no stand since the basis of their case is an illegal act. Adding original characters does not negate the fact you used Bella and/or Edward in your story.  So I totally agree with you on this.  I'm sorry you have to deal with it.  We need to come up with a canned statement for them.

Totally agree with you!
Fanction - free. You posted it online, say goodbye to keeping it for yourself. Why post it in the first place if you had intentions to publish it?
Pubd fanfic - if you are good enough, i will buy your published work. Nolebucgrl is my fave. I bought her pubd, non-fanfic book.
Hate the most - unfinished work or splitting a book into several installments  >:(
This is something I really hate as well.  I really miss those big epic books they use to write.  Haven't really seen one in years.  They are all 3 and 4 book installments.  You are supposed to write a full book.  If it is a serial type book, you write the main story with an ending, but you may leave some things hanging that get picked up in the next story.  But each book has a beginning, a middle and an end. Like the Twilight series.  Or the Harry Potter books.  And look how much money these writers make - not because they write partial books, but because they create worlds you want to go back to for more.

Why is it that on the first quiet night I have in two weeks, when I just want to relax and read, FFN decides to go down?

I think this is 10 years since the movie was released and that was 10 years from the book release.

That makes sense.  I didn't get drawn in until the year Eclipse came out as a movie.  I think that was 2010, but it could have been 2011.

I got drawn in Spring time 2009, and then couldn't STAND the wait until New Moon hit theaters! The fandom has brought so many new adventures with it, and amazing people. It still tugs at the heart strings <3

Maybe the anniversary rerelease will bring new interest to fanfiction writers and possibly rekindle the writing urge for others.
