And? You always wonder why people don't evacuate if they know they live in an area that floods.  I understand waiting if your house/area doesn't normally flood.  But usually you know if you are in an area that will flood if it gets bad.  Ah, well.  I guess they have their reasons.

Thanks, Tricklem.  We're grateful to be safe in our home.  People are doing lots of dangerous and stupid things, on top of the danger Mother Nature is sending our way.  If the forecast is correct, we have 3-4 more days of rain and the potential for another 25 inches (for a grand total of 50 inches).  Now they're talking about releasing some water out of the damns that will affect flooded areas.  It should be an interesting few days.

FFG, I hope you and your family remain safe.

We are used to floods and torrential rains here. Yet, you have the same people being rescued from their flood prone area. You would think they would learn from experience  and leave before they get stranded. But no. I guess a part of you will always hope it won't get as bad. The others stay so their homes won't be robbed. It's a vicious cycle and you just hope for the best that no one dies.

Not to alarm you FFG, but google typhoon Ondoy.

A month's worth of rain fell in a matter of hours PLUS water had to be let out from dams.
We are a third world country and our drainage is not as efficient in the US. I pray, even if the rain continues there, it will not be as heavy so it gives a chance for the drainage system to work.

Take care and praying for your safety. 🙏🙏

That's a pretty big change from New Orleans to the Poconos!  I was recently in Pennsylvania freaking out driving on a road with several signs saying "Dangerous Mountain Ahead."
ROFL!  Was the Dangerous Mountain going to attack you??!??  So funny.  I'm sure it was either a landslide caution or a bad road caution.  What the heck are you supposed to keep an eye out for with that kind of warning?

Oh, unless the mountain's name was Dangerous? LOL!  :D :D :D :D

I know it can be a bit of a difficult read but my impression overall was that in the end, it was worth it, so I encourage you to keep slogging through (if you have the patience)!  :)
I keep going back to it and then reading something else  I think I am actually reading about 3 stories right now - that one, the Sydney Alice amnesia fic and something called Legacy, which is an AH HS fic.  I am mostly done with it and after the mystery was "solved" it started getting a little boring.  There are still a few loose ends to tie up though.

I always say take your irreplaceable valuables and have good insurance.  And I understand some elderly are afraid to leave.  Maybe they have memory issues.  I know in her last couple year,s other than going to church, my mom didn't like to leave the house.  She had driven to church one morning and couldn't remember how to get home.  After that, she would only leave if someone went with her.  It is sad.

Oh, unless the mountain's name was Dangerous? LOL!  :D :D :D :D

The signs were succinct and to the point.  Once you got on it, you realized the danger was due to the very steep grade.  Since Houston is flat, flat, flat, and my driving experience is 98% in the plains, all hills freak me out.  So if they're warning people who are used to driving in the mountains that the mountain is dangerous, I really freak out.  To me, driving in places with hills and mountains is like being on a rollercoaster without the safety protocols. I managed my fear and got us safely back to Houston to face rivers in the flat streets!  It's always something!

True but with people here not having much, everything is valuable. Many of them can't afford 3 meals a day, so insurance is something unheard of. Even the poshest of villages here had never experienced a flood so they were truly caught unaware by Typhoon Ondoy in 2009. They can definitely recover, and quickly, from what happened. 90% of the population won't be as lucky.

But Filipinos are pretty resilient considering we have an average of 10 storms a year here. As long as it is not a life that was lost, we will continue to do backbreaking work and put in long work hours to earn and rebuild what was lost.

Am sure the Americans will weather this storm too. As always, we just pray no lives are lost and damage is minimal. 🙏🙏

What am not sure of is how the nation can weather the orange storm in washington.  :P and we have our own version here  :-\ :(

I re-read that one recently because I'm slowly working my way through prettyrose's story list.  I enjoyed it the second time, too.

I'm sure you've read all the ones I liked - No Ordinary Proposal, Me and Mr. Cullen, and Tequila Sunrise.

Thanks! Is Tequila Sunrise any good? I know I've tried to read if a few times but I give up.

Growing up near San Francisco, you learn to drive mountain-y grades.  Some of the streets are almost straight up.  Okay that is an exaggeration.  But the sidewalks are stairs.  We usually avoided those streets.  I just remember, a week after getting my drivers license, my parents sent me to pick up my grandmother, who lived in the city, with my younger brother and sister for company.  Yeah, I forgot to miss some of those streets. LOL!  My other memory is of the first time I tried to show some friends around SF in my new manual transmission car.  I had to learn how to not stop on the hills or I would stall the car.  It was interesting.  :P

I do find going up less scary than going down. The car automatically goes slower.   ;D

Hope you are still dry!  We are supposed to be getting 109 degree (F) weather today.  I am in the house with a/c but usually the electricity goes out at some point when the weather gets too hot.  Fortunately, it should be mostly dry heat.

I forget about that.  Definitely a spoiled American.  But in someways it is nice that you can fit all your worldly possessions in your backpack.   ;D

Really, though, you are correct.  The lives are much more important than the things.

I really like it.  Bella gets pregnant by Jake, her ex, and has to deal with it alone.  Of course she has friends in Angela and Alice.  Edward starts out being married to Tanya but she is killed in car accident near the start of the story.  Edward meets Bella when she gets a temp job at his company.  He falls in love with her/is attracted to her pretty quickly, but thinks she is with Jasper.

It is a bit slow starting the B/E relationship But Edward is so sweet.  LOL!  Yeah, I like a Sweetward.  ;D

I was just listening to the news and they were saying how they were already arresting people for looting.  I get breaking in for food or clothes and blankets in an emergency, but vandalizing someone's home for valuables when they have evacuated? It is just wrong.   >:(

Unfortunately, there are always those who are willing to take advantage of their fellow man in times of trial.  But, I believe there are more people willing to reach out to help others.

This is true. It was amazing watching all the volunteers helping others to safety. There were pictures of people carrying others through the water.  It is so great how people do help others in emergencies like this. Especially the stupid ones who try to drive through the water. Sigh. First thing they tell you. Don't drive through flood waters. Especially running waters. :P

That said, we are keen to transfer this site into the hands of those who will do great things with it. Do you know anyone who'd be perfect for this role? Send us a note.

PS. The site is going to become even better once development on our long to-do list resumes. Cheers.

Will the Fictionpad end, if they can not find successor

Just after Hurricane Andrew blew through South Miami in '92, my friend returned to his house to find a guy in his bedroom going through his dresser. My dad's response was to walk up and down the block with a shotgun and recruit a neighborhood patrol. We had a daytime curfew too.

I just saw that the reservoirs are overflowing and the chemical plant exploded. I really hope you stay safe FFG.

What's so devastating is knowing how much of this is a man-made problem. Reclaiming wetlands and coastal areas always leads to flooding, but they always rebuild in the same place. Holland figured out how to prevent flooding seven feet below sea level, so hopefully we can learn from them this time.

I've been on a re-read tear lately, so nothing new to recommend. Just a few classics.
