It is very difficult to choose because there are so many that I like. Here are five that I like.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned An Introduction to Swirl and Daisy by m81170, I know it's not finished but it's definitely up there in my top 3 if I had to choose 2 more it would probably be:

The Misapprehension of Bella Swan by hunterhunting

and

Awake in the Infinite Cold by Quothme for being the only fanfiction that has ever made me cry.

Yup. Me too. After all the stories, I always return to EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION. I think it's an untouchable story, like nothing else. Then after that I like Fridays at Noon and Unexpected Circumstances

Totally agree with Emancipation. Proclamation....epic! I don't think I've cried so much through a fic xx

Mine would have to be switched up in genres, too.

Vamp; (In no particular order)
Multiverse by GeorgeGlass. Completely original plot, beautifully written and astonishing in its perfect flow. I will read this again, soon.
Choices by bandmum. A heartbreaking, and yet heartlifting, look at a what if of Edward leaving before the accident with Tyler's van. 10 years pass and a lot has changed. It almost haunting, in its simplicit beauty.
Shattered by Lacrimosa Moon. While it is E/B, it doesn't focus on that. Instead, it deals with several topics and naming them would give too much away. But trust me, it's more than worth the read. It had me at the edge of my seat and close to tears the whole way through.

(If they hadn't already been mentioned, Distractions by windchymes and Beyond Time by TKegl would be on here.)

AH; (In no particular order)
A Pound of Flesh by jaxon22. I am currently reading this for the third time and I am not even close to tired of it. Not only does it have several different plot lines, without becoming confused as a reader, but the author's use of third POV gives us a peek into other voices than just the usual, i.e. E/B. It's beautiful, heartbreaking, sweet, powerful, maddening, and so much more. I definitely think this is my all-time favorite AH.
Kidnapped by madcowre. I read this years ago and haven't gotten back to it yet, only because it's still imprinted so deeply in my mind that I still remember it well, and because it is very angsty. I love angst, but this one will break your heart without stopping to apologize for it. Definitely don't recommend it to those who don't like angst, though you'd be missing out on an amazing story.
Gravity series by drotuno. The first is called Blood & Glory and can be read as a standalone, as it has a finite ending. But you'd miss out if you didn't read the others, too. The first is more angsty than the others, for reasons obvious if you read them. The series is well-written, complete with all four stories, and the work of one of my personal favorite authors in the fandom. Def check it out.

Same for me... almost 2 years after reading this, only look on the name of that story make me heavy with sadness...I have not enought strenght to re-read this...and after that experience I am very careful with ending of stories...

It's so difficult to rate the top three especially when the stories differ in genres. But I will do my best and say that my top three best Twilight Fanfics include:

So, I just joined here (like a week ago), and I know I'm super late (this discussion is dated 2012 and it's now 2014), but I thought it wouldn't hurt to reply.

My top three:

1. The Cube by SDFreeze/Suddenly Sandi (All sequel. Actually, any story written by SDFreeze/Suddenly Sandi are in my top lists, but The Cube is my stand out. It was the reason why I fell in love in fanfic.)

2. Nightingale by Lady Gwynedd/Mrs. Brownloe (Again, all stories by her are also in my top lists. Who doesn't want a gentlemanly/period piece Edward?)

3. Cinderbella: A Forks Fairytale by absolutely ordinary (This is one of the few well-written high school fics that wasn't all about lemons/getting drunk/hormonal teenagers. The characters will actually make you feel like you're reading Edward and Bella from Twilight, although I've got to say I like this Bella than the Bella in the book. It saddened me that absolutely ordinary never wrote another story.)

So, yeah, they're kinda diverse in genre and audience.

OK, my absolute FAVORITE Twifics after reading THOUSANDS of them since 2008, is....

1. Falling Beyond Redemption by Aleeab4u. If you haven't read this, and want to see a 'what if' scenario that takes the place of canon BD, THIS is the story that will make you angry, sad, scared, and SWOON! This is TOTALLY E/B all the way. This is the Edward I would have LOVED SM's to be. Strong, possessive, devoted, and oh so loving of Bella. It takes canon to the 100th degree!!!

2. The Bigger They Are by LadyExcalibur2010 - First of all, I LOVE militarywards....so this is a soft spot. If you can get past Edward being a little....playerish, before he meets Bella (although, I don't think he was terribly bad), and love a STRONG Bella that knows what love is because she's had it before, and won't settle for less, and an Edward that basically falls for Bella at first sight and is willing to take on 4 strapping, troublemaking boys, then you'll love this!

3. I remain, Yours by Momatu - I'm a canon girl, so here's another one. This story is absolutely SWOONY!! If you want a glimpse of 1918 Edward meets 2010 Bella, and they fall in love through letters, you MUST read this. Don't worry, they finally meet each other and it's just fantastic!!

4. I Don't Believe in Vampires by lazykate - Another canon twist if Edward had stayed away from Bella after meeting her in Biology. He works hard for 2 years to overcome her scent and is finally rewarded. This is another AWESOME 'what if' fic that keeps to SM's canon. It's suspenseful, and action filled, and has some 'devoted to Bella'- Cullen's.

There is some incredible writing out there admist a sea of dreck. Ff is a real clarion call for women to own their sexual pleasure and take responsibility for it (and to teach their sons and daughters to do the same and end the misconception that male-centered NOT ALLOWED is in any way instructive as to what pleases women and 'faking it' hurts everyone).

I'll offer my three favorite authors, whom I suspect are all "real" writers using ff as a training ground (lucky us!): eiluned price, Oprah Winfrey, and whatsmynomdeplume.
