A little (clothing) help needed
« on: June 27, 2012, 12:51 PM »
So. I have recently (6 months ago) moved to a new apartment.
The only difference between this and the previous one is that the ne ;Dw  flat is in an old building (built in 1940). It was darn expensive and it has big airy rooms. I personally LOVED it…but now…

Any way, all was well until my clothes started staining in the closets.
The closets are new. Nobody smokes in our apartment.
First it was only noticeable on white clothes, but I am now seeing it on all of my clothes.
Some of the clothes are new, some are older, some are never worn. These are NOT old stains. These yellowish stains appear on the shoulders and sleeves when the clothes are on a hanger, or one exposed areas when folded (the top shirts front side, the shirts under that- only the fold).  :'(

So…I am asking you other fashion lovers on PTS…do you have any idea what it is? Some kind of moisture stains? What kind? Maybe mold? Again, what kind? And….most importantly- how do I stop it? The stuff that was not worn for more than 30 days has ugly brownish yellow stains and I am unable to remove some of them- even with dry-cleaning.
I put some of my stuff in to air-tight bags now, but I am unable to put all my thing in to them, seeing as how I am supposed to use them rather often. :-\

Any help or ideas are very much welcome.  8)

I just noticed this post.  Any luck yet?

If not, do the clothes in the closet feel moist or damp at all? Is the apartment in a basement? If either of these, maybe you can try a dehumidifier to take moisture out of the air.

My go-to stain remover is a bar of hand soap (preferably white to avoid dyes that could cause more staining). I rub the moistened bar on the stained areas until I see soapy suds on the clothing. Let sit for a few minutes, then hand scrub the area to wash the soap off. It's worked on stubborn wine stains during my college days  ;). I hope it can help with yours!

For the time being, maybe try to cover your clothes with a sheet or blanket to avoid exposure to direct air.

have a couple of solutions that might help   (#1 )  something obtained in the USA   is "Oyiclean" the other (#2 )  You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login  damprid also in USA  but placed in closets /wardrobe

BTW I'm in the USA   and #3   keep wearing the garments even if you have to stay at home  to do it  rotate them if possible.  More you wear them, less chance of what happens to your clothes with the stains.  If you notice that you haven't worn one (or more) of the garments in a year, consider giving it away or throwing them out, then will have more space for your clothes to breathe and air out.

I was also wondering where in the world you are located? As that can be of some consideration. If you could tell us, perhaps I'll be able to give you couple of more advice.

I've run into the same thing in my closets. Mine are Cedar lined so between that and the damp air (Pacific Northwest) seems to be the cause. This only happens usually tho in the spring/fall/winter since summer we get enough dry days so I started using a dehumidifier. There is something else you can buy that sucks the moisture out of the air that doesn't run off electricity but I can't remember the name. We use it in our trailer to keep out mildew. Something air maybe??

The stuff that comes packed in pill bottles in the little packets that says do not consume.  You can buy larger amounts of it and make packets for your closet.  It absorbs moisture.  That's why they put them in pill bottles.

I just can't remember the name right off the top of my head.

I can't believe they still make that stuff, my dad drank that when I was little and I thought they stopped making it.  I'm a Molsons Canadian girl myself.

LOL If you're not careful you'll be wearing it over your head. Though I have heard beer is good for your hair.
I bet you have the softest hair Philo.  :P

Actually I do.  It's a right royal pain in the tush.

I have baby fine soft hair.  IF it is cut short enough I have curl  and two widows peaks in it but any length and it's straight as a board.  Jon, God rest his soul, use to tell me in the 80s I was screwing up his combs from the Gel and mortar when he would cut my hair.

My mother and half sister are the ones who got the thick coarse hair that holds anything.

So what is now? Long and straight or shorty and curly? I can't picture, knowing your current and past profession, you with long hair.
I can however picture you with a bald spot from where drypen keeps smacking you in the head.  ^-^

 :D

I had a pony tail at one time.

Now it is short enough to be wavy and I've got my widows peaks.  One of the peaks is all grey so it is white.  Like Jame Lee's Burke's Dave, I'm a streak

A ponytail?  :o That does not fit my image of you. Are you talking like when you were in your 20s?
I've had grey hair since I was 16, I had a skunk strip on the right top side of my head. I've been dying my hair ever since.

I'm the other way. Just started getting a few strands although I noticed a lot of the "new" hair growing in at my temples are pretty grey.
