Anyone else use a memory stick?
« on: August 29, 2012, 01:26 PM »
I've seen a lot of things here where people talk about not being able to save books or losing them from computer crashes.

I know most e-readers have a tremendous amount of memory and have the ability to add more but I don't keep a lot on mine.  I have a Nook so yeah, all my Barnes and Noble ones are there (which are about 200 or so) and in general I will put 10-12 books on at a time but I keep them all organized on a memory stick.  Well, mostly organized   :)  I can transfer them from the computer to the stick and then delete them from the computer and when I transfer them to my Nook later they stay on the memory stick too so when I am done I can just delete that copy.  I have had friends buy memory sticks and I just copy mine onto theirs and they get the books too.

Maybe I'm just too NOT ALLOWED..lol

I actually use 2 forms.  I back up the back up.

I copy my books to a SD card.  I'm looking at a 32 or a 64 gig one for book storage right now.  I currently use a 8 gig but in my reader I use a 2 gig.  I don't consider the 2 gig permanent.  I use it as I do the drive on my ereader.

I also burn to disk.

Any of those can be corrupted and having a backup of the back up keeps it extra safe so I am not sitting there using what my mother use to say was "Those Words" when I get the "cannot read drive [or disk] "  error.

I also learned the hard way that memory can go bad with age.  I have some old floppy disks I pulled out to use for some old games and discovered on some I can't read half the disk.

Phil's rule:  Make a backup of your backup.
And do NOT count what is on your computer as one of them. ;)

I have three.

A memory key (which is what Danes call it, don't ask), an external hard drive and an dropbox account dedicated to storing books.
I am extremely paranoid when it comes to data, so I have quite a few precautions in place.

Not yet.  I just got it but I'm reading another right now.  It is next.  I like the way Sandman is written.  They have the title of the working copy for 2013 up on Goodreads right now also.

Edited to add: Had an external hard drive until Dec.  It crashed but it was made out of my old laptop's hard drive so I guess it was due.  I haven't replaced it yet.  Kid just bought his mother a 500 gig one for her birthday.  I have this urge to visit my sister and liberate it because she has NO clue what to do with it.

And we use to think 64 megs was huge... sigh.

I have an external drive to keep my files since I won't know if my computer is having technical difficulties. One time I accidentally deleted all my files permanently and it's a good thing I had a back up file. Then again, not all my files were saved.

I just bought one and now want to organize my books on a stick as well.  Right now my books are on an iPad and an iPod so if one crashes I have the other.  I have a few on the computer which I want to back up.
Please excuse any spelling errors.   I have dyslexic fingers!
