How do vampires earn money?
« on: July 25, 2012, 10:28 AM »
So I'm trying to write a vampire fiction and have trouble explaining why my vampires are filthy rich. I did say that they made a lot of investments for centuries but I want to give them a more natural feel and not the puff kind I feel when I find out that our Edward in Twilight doesn't work.
I want my vampires to work. I first thought private bank owners but I don't know what kind of bumps I'll bump into if I take that road.
I'm thinking about oil company CEOs too but I keep thinking I can do better.
Can you give me some ideas? No cliches please.

Wow good question. But think of all the inheritance taxes they do not have to pay etc... But not all are rich usually. Just the MC and his/her friends.

Back in the old days [points cane at the young whippersnappers]  I always figured it was the big whammy.  If a Vampire can control a person [eyes/mind whammy] what's to stop him from draining a bank account or having other assets "Sold" to him?  Only Ethics.

If you aren't doing the mind whammy then it has to be darn luck.  Example.  Investing in IBM when they first offered the stock or Bell Telephone when it started.  And no unless you can throw in time travel, there is no way it could be anything but dumb luck.  Or owning a 500 acre farm on Long Island or Manhattan from the time the Dutch owned it.

Unless you are mainstreaming the Vamp, you have to pretend they don't exist which means he becomes his own son.  Inheritance tax is not universal.  My state has it and I have one due to the tune of paying these twits 15% for something I already PAID FOR.. Excuse me... want to really hurt the local rep by voting for someone else next election.  However if I lived in another state I would pay none.  Trick?  Sell out before you die and move to a state with no tax. That simple.

So if you are not basing it in "reality with the existence of supernatural"  you can create any type of fantasy world you want.  You just have to convince us the alternate world is real.

What about taxing? If they were part of a council, aristocracy, ruling family, or some other type of ruling body they could impose taxes on their followers (fledglings? Minions? lol). It could be like a tithe or something. Just an idea.

I've been sitting in front of the idiot box giving this some thought (what a great topic).

Vamps are centuries old.  They see well in the dark.  Who's to say that they didn't come to the new world and when the gold rush happened, they didn't rob working mines at night.  Maybe they could be sensitive to the energy of diamonds or other stones that drew them to veins so they had an easier time mining it.  Back even a hundred yrs ago, things cost next to nothing so (not many places to spend it) they sat on their riches til modern day times.

Old world vamp where natural medicines through tropical plants, parts of weird and wonderful animals/reptiles whatever, that were passed down through the ages.  As time moves on, a smart vamp invested (or starts) in a pharmaceutical company combining forgotten medicine with modern practices.  We all know how much weight pharm co. have with todays governments, policies, health care system, etc.  The companies are worth millions.  Lots of room to expand on this thought.

As technology grew and computers came into existence you have a vamp hacker, an all night programmer.  Life wasn't all about stocking, terror, sex and feeding.  Before Bill Gates there was ?????  Maybe your vamp could be a game creator.

Maybe crazy ideas but ideas none the less.  Hope this sparks an idea for you.

I read a book where the vampire was a romance writer  :D Funny, right? Well, he could be a famous suspance/paranormal writer. In the past he could have been a doctor for some rich men.

He could be aldo part of a famous rock band, could have lots of clinics that are working with the blood...
I'm selfish, impatient and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control and at times hard to handle. But if you can't handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best. I don't like pressing thanks on any post I'm special that way.

Some of them have jobs, Carlisle does in twilight

then in a tv series from the 90's   He was a cop that only worked nights

In books they made investments and did evening jobs,

But it is a murkey area in most books
I am not a complete idiot, some parts are missing    :)

How old is your vampire and does he/she have the usual vampire traits e.g stronger, faster, misting, mind control etc, origins, ethics?

If not too honest in the past and old enough maybe a burglar that took jewelery, tomb robber, if around when tomb was built and sold items more recently. Family wealth, maybe invented some every day item with some else and owns the rights. Plenty of time to study both books and human nature.
Any income if left in a bank long enough will earn quite a bit of interest, after all what do they need to spend it on except a safe place to sleep and clothes, no need for food.

Everyone seems normal until you get to know them

you can always take a look at the third-shift listings in your local paper. I have a friend who's an overnight (10pm-7am) paramedic. He's paid double what the daytime paramedics are paid.

If your vampire is very very old, may be he was in the crusades, and helped founding the Templars. Everybody knows they were filthy rich, richer than any king of Europe, there's even a rumor that says that the Templars are the inventors of today's banks, with interests, loans and such. Philo could probably tell you more about that, he likes history...

Personally, I think the vampire would probably rob the person that they have just feed on as it makes the most sense to me.  But if they vampire is very old, there is a possibility that they could have amased a considerable fortune in their time.
