I need to know the model of your laptop before I can offer any advice on the matter. As there are different types of RAM available these days, installing the wrong type of RAM into your laptop may actually damage it.If you haven't installed RAM into your laptop before I recommend taking it to a computer shop and have them do it for you. Most computer shops will do it for you free of charge provided that you purchase the RAM from their store.
It is a Gateway M460 series. I went online to Gateway to see what I need that would be compatible and surprisingly they were helpful. I just noticed someone had said that if you put in an extra memory card without replacing the original as well that it might not run correctly. I only have 512 MB right now and it is very slow. I have another empty slot that I could put a 1GB card in according to Gateway. They said I could also replace the other card as well and have a max total of 2GB for this laptop, but no more. My original memory is a PC 5200 and the new 1 GB is a PC 5300 (DDR 200-PIN ). Should I just buy 2 new ones? It is relatively cheap so I would rather do it right than screw up my laptop. Thanks for your help.
Yeah, you could just get two strips of 1GB of RAM and install them into your laptop. That would make your laptop run a faster, and if it is as cheap as you say it is. Go for it, but if you are strapped for cash install an 1GB strip should make you laptop run faster anyway.
