They're both nearly as bad as shutter/shudder.  :P :P  >:( >:(

I am reading something right now, the story is good, but the author is Swedish and there are so many wrong words mostly wrong homonyms and typos - curios instead of curious.  I keep stopping and starting because they get annoying, but I like the story and otherwise it is well written.  She really needs someone to proofread it and make the corrections.

Hi just joined and I know I know I should post it on the recommendations board and I have with no luck! I love twific but seriously getting tired of the same personalities different stories. So I need recommendations for a Bella that's confident and DIFFERENT Alice and Rose characters. Even bashing those 2 would be wonderful. If you have any suggestions please help!

Hey everyone!

We are all familiar with fanfiction, right?

But what about when the original author writes a fanfic from her other book?
I was really enjoying Sara Dessens books. So im reading the second in a row ( ive read her other books before, but im not sure if it was in a row).

Anyway, its the same book!! Different plot, but basically the same stuff and behaviour in both books.
I would be loving these books if i hadnt realized this. They are cute and swoony, some minor angst.
How do you get away with this? Too many smiliraties in those books.

 >:( >:( >:(

Ive read Saint Anything (realeased this week) and now im reading Along For The Ride.

Wow, I didn't know that a published author could get away with that. Why would a publisher even agree or want to publish it?

Im guessing the Publisher didnt realize. Maybe she has a new editor?

Along for the ride was published in 2009.

Im guessing the author is counting no one would read both books in the same week and notice the similarities.

She did it because it was a successful format. And she may have not realized it was quite so similar.

I used to read tons of Harlequins. Betty Neel was a favorite. Her stories were primarily nurse/poor girl in bad circumstances/shy girl bullied by family members meets handsome Dutch doctor who falls in love with her immediately but gives her time to realize she is in love with him.

Now if she actually used the same wording?  Hmm. Can you plagiarize yourself?

It's hard to answer this one. Part of fanfic is that the characters have a certain personality that may be exaggerated  (crazy shopaholic Alice)  My favorites tend to have Rose as a best friend. But there was one with Victoria as the best friend.

While not quite as similar as these two, Dan Brown's books are very formulaic, like he just picks x,y,z to change and its all the same story.  Or at least the 3-4 I read in a short time span cause they were some of the only books I had available.

Oh yes, some authors just find the formula that works for them, and stick with it. Anyone that reads M/M can tell you about Mary Calmes. She wrote one series about a couple guys that was pretty popular, and every other  book she's written since then is just a Sam & Jory rehash. Same formula- the cute, twinkish fellow that EVERYONE loves and wants to be around, and the gruff, possibly straight guy who can't stay away from the twink. She mixes it up a little here and there, but mostly, she keeps writing Sam & Jory.

Her books are very sweet with a bit of angst thrown in. And fade to black. Because she started writing in the 60's? I think. No sex allowed. I found most of them at the thrift stores and paid between 10 and 25 cents for the majority. Quick reads. But I liked reading them between the heavier mysteries and sci-fi books I read as a teenager.

That's the tricky part isn't it? I mean in trying to construct my characters, Alice (to take your example) is almost the hardest one to develop because without her ability who or what is she and is she tolerable? The shopaholic thing is understandable, but the power that most people give her? eh.....

I've read a few where Bella comes in and says why the heck are we allowing Alice to run our lives?

Of course, in those stories, Alice is usually overdone. She makes everyone do everything she wants because she s"sees them doing it. She picks the clothes, the places they go, when they hunt, and everyone just goes along because it is easier than fighting her.

Totally agree on Alice! Too many authors WAAAY overdo her meddling and also her shopping tendencies, even in the stories where they aren't making her out to be in the wrong.

I recently started reading this one based off the high school fic recs from a few pages back.  I'm loving it so far!  I don't know if I've read anything by this author before, but didn't she write another popular fic?

I FLOVED IT!!!! I wanted to pound my head against the wall, throw my kindle out the window, and various other aggressive outbursts... But I ate it all up, every word!
So glad you loved it!  I took a break after finishing book 3 and still haven't started book 4.  I think because that's where i stalled during my original reading of the series.     I've gotten hooked on the tv show and man I love that Jamie more every single episode.

Anybody who saw the theatrical release watch the unrated version of Fifty Shades of Gray?  If so, is there much of a difference between the two versions?
I've been wondering this same thing!   Anybody know?

I've decided to read my first MM romance...  I really love the forbidden love kind of stories so I'm thinking maybe I'd like one of the MM books.    Do you guys have one that you recommend trying first?  Preferably without a lot of angst (since it will be my first one, I need to ease in! LOL) and also prefer one that does NOT involve fireman/cops/soldiers.

I'm considering starting with The Backup Boyfriend by Jaymes.
