It is the same here although I never thought about it before!

We had our local elections on Thursday.

It really pisses me off when my female colleagues don't vote because they don't see the point/can't be bothered - people died for the opportunity - is this just me?

It's mandatory to vote here.
Which is good, we already have too many people selling their votes for cheap government assistance.

Ok, I totally stole this and added it to my GR profile. :-*

Please don't use it as your profile pic - that's one of my main p0rn sources!

Even if you do get censored frrequently!  :D

Speaking of... I am quite mesmerised by Loopy's current GR profile pic.  >:D

Question:
In Australia, we have labour and labor.
Labour is what women go through for child birth, or any physical work. Labor is one of our political parties.

What is the spelling in the rest of the world?

Here, it's just spelled labor. Both applies to childbirth and work. In fact, we just celebrated Labor Day on May 1, which is a national holiday.

I've always thought that any country with an extra "u" for some words would indicate they were under Britosh rule before (Australia, HK etc.). The Queen's English has words spelled like that (labour, harbour ...)

Since the Philippines were last colonized by the US, we spell english words like them. And, with the Spaniards colonizing us the longest, our national language has a lot of Spanish words.

I agree that voting is a privilege.

I also think that it's a responsibility and if you don't vote, you shouldn't get to complain about the politicians or the decisions they make.

Voting is compulsory for everyone here, as soon as they turn 18 - there are fines if you don't vote.

I have worked on voting days (here, most polling booths are in schools, church halls, etc) and my job has been to mark off names on the electoral roll and give them the ballot paper to vote on.

There really are a lot of people who are too stupid to have the privilege of voting - it is scary to think that they come in, tick any box because they don't care at all, and their vote counts as much as someone else who is well-informed about the issues.

Then there are the people who come in and abuse me because it seems that I am the one making them vote. We also get people who write lovely messages on the ballot paper - even personal letters to the Prime Minister or a particular politician, as though they will see the actual voting slip!, or those that cross out the names and write in other names - like that vote will be counted.

Mind you, in Australia, we also have the Fishing Party, and the Sex Party - and they always get quite a few votes because the people who have no interest in the actual reason we vote like the names or think they're funny. I fear that one day, those parties will actually get enough votes to rule the country!  :o

That's my understanding of the our/ur spelling, but I've always wondered about why we have both Labour and Labor.

Our Labour Day is always in May - most people just call it May Day, and we have the Queen's Birthday in June. Last year, the state government decided that we have too many public holidays in the first part of the year and none in the second part, so we had 2 Queen's Birthdays - in June and in October and then they were going to permanently move it to October.

Then, for some reason, when the public holidays were announced for 2013, Queen's Birthday was back in June and Labour Day was moved to October.

Most people are just assuming that this Monday is a public holiday - I know we will have kids away from school!

It means that I get a 4 day weekend in June - our Show holiday is on a Friday, and the Queen's Birthday is on the following Monday. Yay!

Ooh,  you got me started on elections! We have one in 2 weeks. It's to vote for senators and the local politicians (congressmen, mayors and vice mayors).

It's sad but we are known for dirty elections. Vote buying is very rampant since 90% of the population is in poverty. So we do have the uneducated people determining our govt officials bec of their sheer numbers. Many of them are corrupt (how else will they recover the millions they spent for the election) but i try not to lose hope that "better" people will win which is why i still vote. You may not totally erase their stealing, but hopefully they will still do good for the country.

We had 2 ratings company give our country higher investment grade ratings very recently (Fitch and Standards & Poor). This should encourage more foreign companies to invest in our country and help our economy. These ratings are normally an indication of the level of ease in establishing investments here and the returns on their investment. Related to this is the perception of govt corruption. This means, our current govt. under Pres. noynoy Aquino has done well in putting in place reforms to decrease corruption or at least make dealng with govt agencies easier for a foreign company to see better profit. End of lecture  :(

Which Queens are we talking about here? If you are celebrating a particular Queen's birthday, then how can you move the date? She was born only once! Or is the other "birthday" to celebrate her being throned queen?

Astro would be talking about Queen Elizabeth of England (I hope!). No, the throning date is another event entirely :D She has her actual birthday for a day of private, family celebration, and then a public birthday later where there are parades and she has Queen-y duties to perform. Most monarchs have done it.

I find it annoying, especially because so many do it because they can't be bothered to look at candidates and compare policies. Then again, if they were made to vote they'd probably choose based on party loyalty or shallow reasons anyway. Everyone likes to complain about politicians from what they read in newspapers, and yet when you ask them about the last election they either didn't vote or voted based on an article they saw in The Sun :-[

"The" Queen - yep - there is only one, and we don't even celebrate her birthday ON her birthday!

It's really just an excuse for another public holiday!

Every so often the republicans start talking about Australia becoming a republic and everyone gets nervous - that we might lose a holiday!  :D

It's also the cost of elections that get up my nose! On Election Day, millions is spent on how to vote cards that get shoved into your hand as you approach the polling booth, and then just get dumped into a bin on the way out!

Our federal election was called earlier this year for 14 September. Usually, elections are announced by the Prime Minister only a month or 2 before the actual date of the election. Our current PM is very unpopular in the poles and within her own party, and she was worried about leadership challenges, so to secure her position, she announced the election 7 months before the actual day of voting! So that means that all the pollies are in election mode - promising the sky, kissing babies, but not actually doing anything.

The best thing about elections - they are held at my school so my P&C gets to do some major fundraising - a sausage sizzle, a cake stall, a raffle, etc. I swear most Aussies only vote so they can get a sausage on a slice of bread for $2!  :D

Looks like I'll be baking cupcakes again in September!  ::)

My uber-cyber stalking skills indicate that she was *reading*  ;) a book called Big Girls Do It Pregnant on 2 May.

Here in California it is all labor.  I'd say it was the same for the rest of the US but there are some pockets that spell and pronounce stuff strangely compared to the rest of the country LOL!  ;D

Isn't her real birthday in April?

I always thought that was a little strange.  Other than June is probably a better month for parades than April.  :P

I admit that I rarely vote.  By the time election hits, I tend to think all of the people running are power hungry a$$holes who are only in it for themselves.  So I can't see voting for any of them.  And the worst thing is, the ones I would like to vote out of office are never in my district - so they aren't on my ballot.

And? I don't complain much.  Except I really wish Congress would do their job & make a budget.  This year? The continuing resolution goes to the end of the year.  WTF?  :-\

I heard they always celebrate the monarch's birthday in June because that's when the weather is nice in England.  What the weather is like in the rest of the Commonwealth is, of course, irrelevant.

It just amazes me how different it is in each country. I am not into politics - I usually just nod wisely and say nothing - and think even less!

I can't understand how driving the country further into deficit while we have one of the strongest economies in the world is a good thing! I know that I'm finding it harder and harder to save money and everything is getting more expensive. As a single person on a pretty good wage, I seem to be getting hit harder with taxes and levies, etc. I pay more for health insurance than my brother, who is married with 2 kids, because his wife only works a few hours each week.

It's bloody expensive to be single!

I'm glad that we don't have the corruption of some countries. That said, our pollies are hardly angels! You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

The weather is nice here all year round - compared to England!

We're less than a month from Winter - I'm sitting on my back deck in shorts and a t-shirt. Not a cloud in the sky, nice breeze. It was just cool enough for me this morning to think I might need to start thinking about putting a light blanket on my bed.

The two weeks I spent in Australia were the last two weeks of May (which I believe was late fall for Australia).  The weather in Sydney and Brisbane was great.  The weather in Melbourne was chilly and rainy.  Like any large country, I'm sure it just depends on where you are.  When you say it's nice all year round, I assume that includes the incredible heat, as well.  I don't mind the incredible heat and humidity here in Houston in the summer time, I just stay in the air conditioning!

I think I repress the heat as soon as the weather starts cooling off!  :D Air con makes it easier - expensive, but easier.

Melbourne sucks balls!

Unless you want to go shopping, but then they only have clothes that you can wear for the week or two that we call Winter. At least my winter is not usually wet. The days are usually just gorgeous - imagine the bluest, clearest sky...and then double it!

Give me another month or two and I'll be lamenting the "cold" weather we get here - although I can't wait to get out my scarves and coats and boots.

And my slippers and flanno pjs!

And jeans - I love my jeans, but I can't understand how people can wear them all year round without dying of heat stroke! No matter how good their arse looks in them!

Yes - May is late Fall, but to be completely accurate, it's late Autumn. Australians don't have "Fall" - we do, however, fall when we have too much to drink!
