Review: Kissing Fire - A.M. Hargrove
« Reply #121 on: April 14, 2013, 01:16 PM »
Kissing Fire - A.M. Hargrove  :star: :star: :star: :star:

This is the blurb and the cover pic is good too ......

Preston Mitchell, undercover DEA agent, has led a life of danger and obscurity. Knowing his job would never allow a normal relationship, he’s never opened himself up to any woman...that is until the lovely Avery Middleton stumbles into his life.

To the outsider, Avery has it all...wealth, family, connections and a great job. But on the inside, she’s miserable. Her social life is in the dumpster, the kooky gal next door has some zany plans for her and her selfish mother drives Avery to the point of insanity. Her only salvation is to get out of Charleston and start a new life. So that’s precisely what she does. She moves to Seattle and steps right into the path of hot and sexy, Preston.

Unfortunately for both of them, Avery ends up being in the wrong place at the wrong time and is now running for her life. But she’s not alone. She has a gorgeous DEA agent protecting her and suddenly finds herself irresistibly captivated by him.

There’s only one problem. Preston carries more than his share of mental baggage, courtesy of his job. His covert missions have put him in places and situations he can barely stand to think about. Avery rocks Preston’s world because she is nothing like anyone he’s ever met and something extraordinary begins to happen between them.

But can their love survive in this world, where danger, intrigue and deception lurk on every corner?

Ok so it sound like the usual chic lit crap and to be honest the story line is nothing that we haven't heard before, but it made me laugh and I mean laugh until tears ran down my face *in an ugly not a sexy way*  and its the first book in a long time to do that.

However,  there is a serious element to the story that makes it kind of believable if you can give credence to the real undercover life of an agent - which is true and this book blends fiction and non-fiction together.  Its up to you to believe the truth or the fairytale ..... !!!!

The male protagonist's back story is not easy .... but what in life is ?  He probably doesn't stand alone his story in either fiction or fact.

Laugh out loud funny and really, really sad at the same time !!!!!!

The characters are hilarious especially the women, they have something going on *maybe weed* not sure what it is but its an entertaining read.  Look out for the secondary characters ......

I have not read anything by this author before, but will certainly give her stuff a 'look see' in the future !!!  However, it may seem confusing to some in the beginning but just follow the tale to the end .......... its worth it for your HEA, maybe .... !!

Definitely 4 big stars ............

BTW - RED ..... where do you guys get the star icons from and can someone please put 4 stars on this review - (here speaks someone who really doesn't have a clue and cares even less  :P)

Review: Demonic Dora by Claire Chilton
« Reply #126 on: April 14, 2013, 02:19 PM »
Demonic Dora by Claire Chilton
:star: :star:

NOTE: Change not allowed to F**KING. LOL. :D
Eeek. It was okay. Hmm... I'm being generous with 2 star. More like 1.5 stars and I just rounded it up. I don't know why the reviews I saw and the ratings are all 4 to 5 stars. :O

I am disappointed to say the least. I was expecting something more. And what's up with the use of poo, crap, shit, manure and whatnot as a means of saving or retaliating with other people or I should say demons. WTF. It's just so wrong. Every time there's something going on, you bet your arse there'll be shit in there. *rolls eyes* Why choose SHIT?! WHY?!?! Can't you use, some other things? Uh, like those birds pecking them instead of shitting on them. Because that is just so NOT ALLOWED GROSS.

And since I mention the word 'NOT ALLOWED'... I do believe this is YA, right? I mean there's no age mentioned... BUT I liked to think it is Young Adult. Okay. So I know Young Adults nowadays, curse all the time. But that does not mean it's okay to use NOT ALLOWED in a book. NO. It's not a good promotion for kids/teens. Does that mean it's okay for kids today to say NOT ALLOWED for every word they say?! Sorry, but it's not appropriate language. They should have Warning on the summary.

WARNING: Explicit language content or something.

And from the start I was hoping to know why she do the things she do, I mean you're a daughter of a priest (this is a bit weird for me since to my knowledge, priests doesn't marry and have a kid. :O maybe like a preacher of sorts?), so okay, they push you to do stuffs you don't want to do... But why summon a demon? Why THAT kind of mindset? Cause you're dark emo? I just don't get as to WHY she was inclined to do those. She could do drugs or something but why SUMMON A DEMON? WHY is that? Well, whatever, it's the author's privilege to do whatever she wants with the story. I just wished it was fully explained.

Kieron... Is something I wished to be a badass. But nooooo... he's a bit wimpy of sorts. I mean, grow a backbone! You cannot let Dora or anyone else dictate what you need to do. Even Dora got that right. And they don't have chemistry. Dora and Kieron that is. Well, okay maybe a bit. But not that much as I would have like.

I think the only character I like or rather likable is... Pooey. LMAO. :P He got ninja skills. LOL. I round it up to two stars cause there are some parts that I laugh or smirk. That's it.

For my author names challenge I needed an author first name that starts with Y so I went for a oldie Harlequin.

Season of Shadows by Yvonne Whittal :star: :star:

This is a typical 80ies Harlequin book.
This book is full of double standards and examples of how love is supposedly "blind". I also have to say that it didn't age that well.
The heroine bears a lot from the hero who is a jerk with capital "J" and even though he explains himself at the end I still don't get him.

FAYZ series by Michael Grant

FAYZ SERIES by MICHAEL GRANT
:star: :star: :star: :star:

NOT RECOMMENDED FOR BELOW 18

When Gone came, it took the world by surprise through its concept. No adults, no authority and their entire world limited into an opaque impenetrable sphere of 10 miles radius. Add this with the strange mutations, ensuing chaos and a strange and powerful enemy created a book that the readers loved.

Then came the Hunger, Lies and Plague, all dealing with specific issues as mentioned by the titles. In Hunger, the food was almost out and it was up to the team of main characters to convince others to help get food. Seeds of discord also began to grow between Mutants and Non-mutants and people dealt with more results of the mutations.

In Lies, the very hope of escaping out was the main focus and how a twisted web of lies was built by everyone to ensure their own wishes. The survivors had finally built somewhat of a society and everyone now hoped to get out of this alive. But the discord among the mutants and non-mutants grew further, leading to a fight between the two with many casualties. Our heroes finally tried defeating Gaiaphage but it survived.

In Plague, different forms of fatal plague began to attack the survivors while their enemy, Gaiaphage, also kept trying to defeat Nemesis to rule the FAYZ (Fallout Alley Youth Zone). The fight between Mutants and Non-mutants took a dark turn, almost destroying everyone until they were wiped out. Thirst began to make its presence known as well as the death toll kept rising. The story finally ended with several deaths, one of which showed that outside world was trying to look in as well. Personally, this book didn't do much, probably because I was bored by the large length of these books.

In Fear, the boredom vanished as the thrill that made Gone great returned. Plus there was also the anticipation of this being the pen-ultimate book that built interest and luckily for everyone, all the complaints I felt with the previous books were resolved in this book. Gaiaphage finally revealed its true intentions as the fight between Nemesis and Gaiaphage kept taking new turns. In the meanwhile, the two main characters, heading up their own separated settlements, now remained in a temporary truce. But when Gaiaphage went for a character both leaders took notice of, it set off another chain of events that ultimately ended with the wall going transparent. The outside world could now see in and the very first sight it saw was how a teen boy was burning a three year old girl without any remorse or hesitation. This built anticipation further for the last book Light as it raised many questions.

In Light, Gaiaphage and Nemesis finally decided to fight each other as Gaiaphage began to kill everyone to defeat Nemesis. In the meanwhile, the outside world began to debate what to do with those who lived inside the FAYZ, as they were perceived as 'threat to the society'. Some voted for experimentation, some for pardon while many favored death sentences. All the storylines from the previous books began to wrap up as Gaiaphage began its slaughter and survivors, willing enough to stand up to it, decided to try to finish it off. And the end... well the end of FAYZ and the four following epilogues are some of the best chapters I have ever read. Being fair to the story, they remained realistic and provided a conclusion the series deserved.

The 4 stars because I forced myself to read book 3 and 4, not because the story was bad but it was LONG!

Also, the countdowns built up an anticipation for me in each books for the climax and that was well planned.
All this and I haven't even talked about the character development. So if you are still reading this, then go and start them. NOW! They are worth it. But remember 18+ ONLY!

Review: A Feast for Crows- George R. R. Martin
« Reply #137 on: April 15, 2013, 05:33 AM »
 :star: :star: .5

I've finally finished it, took me a while but I made it to the other side!!
This 4th book in the series was nowhere near as good as the last three, not
because of the writing, because there were too many new characters and too little
of the old favorites. As always I hate Cersei like there's no tomorrow...hope she gets
wats coming to her! And im surprised how much I liked Jaime in this book, he's not all
evil like I thought in the beginning of the series.
Out of all the new characters I think I liked Arianne the princess of Dorne, and her friend/maybe enemy now
Darkstar has alot of potential, hope we see more of them! I dont like the Ironmen, none of them!
Love Brienne, wanna see wat happens next for her. He left us on several cliffhangers, but thank goodness
the next book is out already, who knows how long it'll take for the 6th book to be released! Though I don't
think I'll start the 5th book just yet, wanna read something lighter.

Review: Wicked as She wants by Delilah S. Dawson
« Reply #140 on: April 15, 2013, 02:11 PM »
Wicked As She Wants by Delilah S. Dawson

:star: :star: :star: :star:

When I read Wicked As They Come I was totally taken by the world Dawson created. And I adore Criminy. So when I found out that this book will be about Casper, I was not so sure if I will like it. To be honest I really didn't care for him in any of the previous sequels. Still getting a chance at reading any ARC of Dawson is a chance I would never pass by. The world she created in this series is so beautiful and enticing yet also gritty and dangerous, a place I every single time enjoy being taken to.
As expected this time wasn't any different.

Dawson's world building again was clever, beautiful and still surprising. I love how Sang is a parallel world to ours and how several people of our world somehow ended up there. This connection to our world is not only clever but somehow makes one able relate to it better. Then there is the overlap of certain things between the two worlds, like certain pieces of music or poetry ect. which is a stroke of brilliance in my opinion.
Dawson somehow each time manages to give one a dose of known and adds enough surprise and new bits so it's all balanced just right, and while familiar it is still captivating and exciting, but still pretty out there.

Her references to Leaves of Grass as example, while making me sigh internally (and possibly grin a wee bit silly) while reading the book, it also made me pick up my copy and browse through it again after finishing Wicked as She Wants.

I love Steampunk as a general and I love the machine and science bits of it. But I think Dawson's take on this genre is one of my favorites. She goes really easy on the machinery bits- she does bring some awesome ones in.. but her rather light take on it means that even people who are not totally into Steampunk will enjoy this book.

The character building was definitely interesting. As I said I started this book not really liking Casper. At the end of it I was totally invested in the three main character. And my opinion of Casper has changed quite drastically.
While he is the rather self-indulgent and oh so tortured artist we met before, during the journey more one gets to know him more and more. And I discovered that he is also honest, brave and noble.
Ahnastasia though was in my opinion an amazing character to watch. She grew and transformed slowly and discovered at the end where her true strength was and still was able to protect those she loved. Though I did kinda like the wicked predator she was at the beginning, her childish arrogance was a tad bit over the top for me.
Keen was a fun factor thrown in and I loved her snide remarks and her explosive teen temper.
I think one of the reasons I enjoy Dawson's novels are the way her characters interact with each other, the way they effect each other and subtly change as the story goes on. Dawson somehow has a beautiful take on love. Romantic and generally speaking. But her characters aren't pretty and prissy, just like her beautiful and dark world building, she creates character with very realistic traits and flaws, which makes them so likeable.

The storyline, like in the first book is a paranormal romance. While Wicked As They Want, was about a Bludman Criminy Stain saving a human girl Trish, and falling for her. They go on a quest and in the end have to make choices. Wicked as She Wants is about a Bludwoman needing help, which comes in the person of Casper, a human. They go on a quest and fall for each other... and in the end have to make choices...just like most Paranormal Romances I guess.
Wicked as She wants is in some ways based on the real Anastasia Myth. Actually it's a sort of Paranomal take of it. I always loved that myth, and kinda always hoped that she survived and found love... so Dawsons version was incredibly gratifying.
The book move fast and I found myself cobbling up the pages, just like it did with the first novel.
The romance was nice and had a good portion of steamy sexiness to it- but to be honest, personally I prefer the romance between Criminy and Trish. I first thought I might just be because I so much prefer impish, luscious and wonderful Criminy to Casper. But as I pondered about it, I came to the conclusion that Ahnastasia and Caspers romance was much more conventional than Trish and Criminy's.

The writing style is just simply beautiful. In fact on many occasions I was reminded of a book I had of Russian fairy tails which was full of beautiful illustrations. The feel of those stories, the mysterious beauty of Russia but also its harsh environment and it's gritty feeling were reflected in this novel, it's one of the things I absolutely adored in this book. Dawson's paints pictures with her prose.

Another fabulous installment for this series! Dawson had made it into my favorite authors list with her debut but with books like this she will be staying there for a long while to come

Wicked as She Wants is dark romance, gritty beauty and a must read for any lovers of the series as much as fans of Paranormals and Steampunk
