I'm trying to think that too, but it takes me a while to figure out what is says and there are a lot of them.

Sometimes ff.net has problems formatting italicized print (when the author uploads the story) and/or it could have been an issue with flagfic at the time.  If it's still on ff.net you can try converting it with flagfic again and see if the new copy is better.  It's not the author's intent for it to look like that.

I'm not picking on flagfic BTW.  I love flagfic. And I donate.
