*stutters* $7/day? How can they survive? 20 + yrs ago I paid $150/wk ( for two ) during the summers when their was no school.

Ooo Quebec. My sister company is there.

i know. Whiniest province of them all, do nothing but complain but housing and daycare is affordable, that's the only bonus about that.

Sister company? Do you ever come up here for work or no?

We do pay high taxes but daycare is different in each province. Ontario for example is $35/day for daycare. Daycare in Quebec is subsidized by the provincial gov't. Also it's the whiniest province and the rest of Canada helps out. I don't agree but the reason I live here is for the cheap housing and daycare. I'm not breaking the bank for my kids care when I'm at work.

Also our healthcare is free so our taxes are about 35% *scratches head* or around that. It's high but I'd rather this then to pay for healthcare. I read about the insurance rates in the US and almost fainted. I think it's crazy. No one should have to pay for that. It's a right that should be awarded to everyone.

Word! Our taxes are around the same...I'm happy to pay it if it means that if I drops down with a heart attack in the street, my first thoughts aren't "Did I remember to pay my health insurance?"  :D

P.S I have a good friend staying over and he keeps calling Edward an over-gelled pussy and that he'd be able to, and I quote "massacre his arse, vampire or not" * shakes head* Not sure why he's watching it, I'm in a totally different room but I can hear him, like really annoying background music.

Tried once, but the flight was cancelled after I sat in the airport for hours. They are in Saguenay region. My husband has been many times to Toronto and Quebec City, and riviere du loup.

Exactly!  :iagree:

However I don't know how the healthcare system works in the US. Canada is like the UK and France. Lots of taxes but I'd rather pay then get left in the cold.

Boo. Well if you ever do make sure you look me up :) I live in Gatineau which is 2 mins away from the Ontario border. I work in Ottawa but live here. Downside, I pay double the taxes  >:(

Left in charge of taking care of it myself? I know what I'm like, if I had to decide one month between healthcare and a great pair of shoes? I know which I'd choose, and my luck would be on the first day I wear them, I'd trip, fall under a bus and...

Of course, as far as she was concerned, staying home with her kids full time would have driven her crazy  :D ;D

Oh I agree wholeheartedly. My sons are 3.5 yrs apart. So that was TWO in daycare. I love my children with all that I am, but I would have lost my mind to be around them 24/7.

Ugh! Who'd want to look after kids all day?

Oh, hang on...that's what I do!  :-[

But I actually get paid to do it and you won't hear me complaining about leave entitlements here!
I get 12 weeks holiday on full pay. (I do actually work pretty hard during school holidays though!) as well as 10 days per year sick leave that accumulates. I currently have 150+ days banked after 20 years of teaching - and that's after a horrific 2009 when I had glandular fever, influenza A and then developed Chronic Fatigue.

I also have accumulated over a year of Long Service Leave that I can take at full pay whenever I like, or twice as long at 1/2 pay. I used 5 weeks a few years back and tacked it on to my summer break and travelled through Europe for 10 weeks. Few, that was a tough one - travelling and getting paid!  ;) And I still accrue LSL even when I am taking LSL!!!

I'm not sure how maternity leave works but I do know that I have a male teacher that works one day a week in my school. When his wive had their second, he took 6 weeks paid parental leave - 5 weeks before bub (so that he could go on a fishing trip, play golf and went to some motorbike thing at the Gold Coast) and one week after. He started back at work the day after his wife was released from hospital.

I offered his wife that I could do the vasectomy with a couple of bricks and a nail file. She's still thinking about it!

There is some legislation that came into effect here on 01.01.13 called Dad & Partner Leave. I think it is 2 weeks at minimum pay for all. We have govt legislation that sets out the basic entitlements and then anything above that is negotiated through Enterprise Bargaining Agreements. Basically, the Queensland Teachers Union goes into battle every 3 years with the Queensland Government (my employer) and fights out pay rises, entitlements, work conditions, etc.

I am just at the point in my career where I am seeing a lot of these benefits pay off. When I started, 20 years service meant you were still a newbie. Nowadays, very few people stick at teaching for that long so I am seen as a veteran - especially as a teaching principal. Most only do this for 4 or 5 years tops and either move up (you know, the Peter Principle of promoting to the level of incompetence!) or relenquish and go back to the classroom or move on to something else entirely. This year will be my 14th as a teaching principal!

Anyway, if I find someone to knock me up (Rob? Rob?) I can take maternity leave, sick leave and then long service leave. The kid will be at school before I need to go back to work!

And that's not a bad thing because child care here in the merry old land of Oz is ridiculously expensive and there are not enough places. In some areas, woman have to put their name on a waiting list before they even start their pre-natal vitamins!!!

So fracking true, it's not even funny. Well, yes, it is funny in that morbidly dark comedy way but not funny, because I would have the same type of luck.  ;)

What's your thesis on?
and I  :D :D :D :D when Astro had an auto correct from child's toys to child's tits.

At the moment it's going to be study of the change over time of a syntactic or semantic feature in Australian English. But I may end up doing an etymological study, it will focus around an element of Australian English one way or another. I'm working on an exact topic at the moment.

I would loooove to have some snow (don't hit me).

We rarely have it. It's so pretty, of course as long as I don't have to drive in it. Around here, snowplowing, salt, nope, it's called the sun. We have snow and EVERYTHING shuts down.

I would love to have snow here too, but yeah, that is never going to happen. We do get snow in the high country and on the 'mountains' but still, we measure our snow fall in millimetres. We get excited when we get 20mm of the stuff, and I think we have about the only skiing lodges in the world that proudly advertise that they always have enough snow while showing pictures of their whopping great big snow making machines pumping out the fake stuff cause we don't get enough of the real stuff...

I'm so glad of the same here. We do have private health cover too, but it's the lowest you can get and it's to prevent us having to pay the medicare levy. It's nice to know that no matter who you are or where you come from you can get free health care, although the waiting lists for some elective surgeries are years long, but that is because our hospital system stinks thanks to underfunding.

The only thing that happens is we get medical tourists; visitors who come with serious illnesses, collapse on the footpath and then get all their care, surgeries and medication for free...

*jaw drops to the floor* AUD and USD are almost 1=1. $65/day. OUCH!

Haha. I remember when my brother was in care my parents were paying $130AU a DAY! But I know some places charge up to $165, $65 a day here is the cheapest you will get, easily. It's why it's cheaper for so many people to only have one partner working, or only work part time, or why so many grandparents are forced to be babysitters.

Tha Aussie Dollar has been so strong the past few years, at the moment $1AU = $1.04USD, makes online shopping soooo cheap, because even when the dollar was below parity, down at like .80US cents it was often still cheaper to buy them online and ship them out, now I can save the most amazing amount of money.

I fluv your humor Astro. My mother and my grandmother were teachers. They always told me I could do anything I wanted, just not teach. I lack the patience and the verbal filter, so I never even gave it a thought.
