11 paid holidays a year. I do get 4 weeks vacation ( the most given since I have been there 20 yrs), std starts at your 8th day of absence which is at 60% pay and it can last up to 13 weeks, then it goes into ltd. std and ltd are managed very closely by our insurance company. I have only been on std once with the birth of my second son. I was back 6 wks to the day he was born. Since I had a c-section, I had weight lifting restrictions though for awhile. Although things have changed some over the last couple of decades, I would love to have Canada's maternity policy. A YEAR ! I had 6 wks. Now you can have 12 if it goes into FMLA. But FMLA only secures your job, not that you are paid.

I had to look up Maternity Leave but yeah we get 52 week also! WOW! That's good, eh? Almost worth having a baby for  :D :D :D. So if you go into FMLA you might not get any pay? How do you provide for your baby?

I can have up to 12 weeks to care for family. But if it is not medically a reason for me to be out, you don't get paid. Fmla secures your job, that you have one when you return, that is all. So, to help explain, I was on std with the birth. My husband used vacation (one week). He could have taken FMLA for up to 12 weeks, but that is not PTO. Confused?

The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) provides an entitlement of up to 12 weeks of job-protected, unpaid leave during any 12-month period to eligible, covered employees for the following reasons: 1) birth and care of the eligible employee's child, or placement for adoption or foster care of a child with the employee; 2) care of an immediate family member (spouse, child, parent) who has a serious health condition; or 3) care of the employee's own serious health condition. It also requires that employee's group health benefits be maintained during the leave. The FMLA is administered by the Employment Standards Administration's Wage and Hour Division within the U.S. Department of Labor.

Our maternity leave (in Canada) is actually only 12 weeks, but then we get 40 weeks of Family Leave.  The mother or father can take the family leave, or they can split it.  Only downside is that it isn't a paid leave.  They do have to hold your position, though.

You held out your hand, and I took it without stopping to make sense of what I was doing. For the first time in almost a century, I felt hope.

Considering the cost of daycare? It can almost be cheaper not to work if your partner makes enough.  I had a friend who said she only worked for the retirement & insurance. All her take home pay went to daycare. It was crazy.  Of course, as far as she was concerned, staying home with her kids full time would have driven her crazy  :D ;D

Oh I agree wholeheartedly. My sons are 3.5 yrs apart. So that was TWO in daycare. I love my children with all that I am, but I would have lost my mind to be around them 24/7.

I have four children and I too worked for the benefits and actually started making money when all four went to school.  The only downside was they were in four different schools.

I think here it is paid for 39 weeks, which I assume is when some may decide to go back, but you can take the rest unpaid.

I think I read somewhere that Sweden has the best childcare provisions of western developed countries really cheap and every child gets a place.

I just found out from another site that Ally is feeling better and is working on chapter 21 of Guardian.  I'm so happy for her and her family.  I can't even imagine the pain her family was going through the past few years.  :'(  It was months ago, but I had heard she was in a coma and now this.  What an amazing way to end the year and start a new year.  :-*

I'm also excited because hopefully chapter 21 will shed light on the arsehole Edward!!!  I still remember clicking the link to the last update and then almost pulling my hair out at the way chapter 20 ended.  >:(  I lost my appetite and couldn't even eat the brownies I had made that afternoon using Nigella's triple chocolate brownie recipe.  :(  I still remember...

Orphaned at 8, Bella Swan is placed in the care of her God Mother Esme Cullen. Heiress to Cullen Swan Enterprises, Bella grows up hero worshipping 17 year old joint heir, pseudo step brother and self appointed guardian Edward.

If memory serves, isn't he one of the original arseward/possessiveward ?  Lolypop made several manips for this too.

yes, he was!  I started reading Twi-fics back in 2006 I think when I read a HP/Twi crossover fic that included Edward.  Most of the fics after that were generally vamp fics set around the Twilight books, but then there were more and more AU/AH fics.  It was so lovely and fresh.

I seem to remember that there is no HEA for B/E in that one.  It's on a list somewhere....

IIRC  Twice in a Lifetime Singer has an alternate ending that was good, as for the rest of it, I just wanted to pull my hair out, but I read the whole thing.  It was a train wreck I could not look away from.

I would loooove to have some snow (don't hit me).

We rarely have it. It's so pretty, of course as long as I don't have to drive in it. Around here, snowplowing, salt, nope, it's called the sun. We have snow and EVERYTHING shuts down.

Come here. It's been snowing non stop. I'm sick of it.  :-\

I live in Quebec and daycare is $7 a day and there is daycare in school that doesn't cost a thing.

I remember that I had 52 weeks mat leave and it was all paid. Nice year off work and then you go back to your position. I think it's great bonding time with the kidlets.

Out of the Mouth of Babes by Edward's Eternal is now complete.
I liked this Edward (although he has his angryward moments) and Bella.  And Edward's daughter, Emma, is heartbreaking.  There's drama/hurt but there's also sweetness.

Dr. Edward Cullen loves his job, but lives for his daughter. When her little world explodes he will do anything to piece it back together. But could the solution also bring him the happiness he didn't realize he was missing?

I didn't even bother to read the alternative ending. If I was Bella in this story? I'd have lit a bonfire and pushed Edward onto it, and that'd only be because I'd physically not be able to rip him limb for limb first! Mofo....

Funnily Twilit is on terrestrial TV at the moment...It's so odd to look back at it now, Rob looks so young! He's really has improved with age. Errr? And the film hasn't. :D

I'd bet Canada has a higher rate of tax than the US? Like the UK; here the government subsides certain daycare providers, the problem is there just aren't enough of them so then you have to rely on the private sector and those are the ones that rob you blind...Citigroup here has really, really, good daycare provisions for their employees.

My best friend's uncle pays almost $900/month for daycare for 1 kid. I *think* that's for 5 days/week.

Craziness.

We do pay high taxes but daycare is different in each province. Ontario for example is $35/day for daycare. Daycare in Quebec is subsidized by the provincial gov't. Also it's the whiniest province and the rest of Canada helps out. I don't agree but the reason I live here is for the cheap housing and daycare. I'm not breaking the bank for my kids care when I'm at work.

Also our healthcare is free so our taxes are about 35% *scratches head* or around that. It's high but I'd rather this then to pay for healthcare. I read about the insurance rates in the US and almost fainted. I think it's crazy. No one should have to pay for that. It's a right that should be awarded to everyone.
