Okay, here is a place to discuss what you are reading, ask for recommendations and complain about the writing.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, so please play nice

Because we know drypen's watching

Does anyone else have a hard time dropping the preconceived notions they have with certain characters in fanfiction? I do and I think it's why I have such a hard time reading non canon couples. When I'm trying to immerse myself in whatever the author has written I just can't detach myself from the characters I have in my head. That's why I don't mind reading non canon stories where I know the "regular" canon spouse isn't present. I could read an Edward/Tanya fic where Bella wasn't Edward's meek little girlfriend before her, or a Bella and Jasper fic where Edward isn't even a thought and Bella's not running to the comfort of Jasper's arms after Edward did something unforgivable.

One time I tried to read a Leah/Edward fic and Bella was described as his annoying clingy girlfriend, and it so hard to go from one extreme to the other because it reminds me of 90% of the stories I read where any other female is merely there as a plot device that the characters need to overcome in order to get to their happily ever after. An example would be any story where Bella and Edward get together and Jessica/Lauren/Tanya/Victoria are in the background as an ex-girlfriend or someone for Bella to compete with, even though in the 90% of stories I'm describing, Bella is a magical goddess with absolutely no flaws and the obvious choice.

I guess I appreciate when the secondary characters are a bit more fleshed out, because it adds more to the story and these characters aren't just there to act like gnats; annoying and not really needed. The Practice of Love by belladonnacullen is the only example I can think of off the top of my head where I enjoyed reading more about Edward's relationship with someone that wasn't Bella. It added to the story's description of his character in a way that I wasn't waiting for her character to be killed off.

Sorry I'm SO bad at explaining myself, but basically it's just hard for me to go from reading a certain character for the longest time and then trying to get a grasp on what someone is writing where that same character is in a completely different frame of mind.  :(

Yep, though after reading other forums, facebook groups and the like it seems to me that atleast certain aspects of people's preconceptions are fanon. That said, I personally don't like where there's clear wish fufillment.  I've hit a bunch of stories lately where that seems to be the case, or it's pretty clear there's some real life resentment going on.  I understand the whole "this is an outlet" aspect, but there's a point where it hurts the writing.

Of course going back to my comments about fanon, where did Tanya turn into this automatic bitch? There are so few nice or non bitch Tanyas out there.  I get the whole reason behind it kinda but...  The other characters I understand, but I'm still uneasy.  Maybe it's just I can shake off certain things, like HS immaturity so I have not so much of an issue with a "nice" Jessica, Lauren, Mike, etc...

And I'll admit that in one of my WIPs, there's a non canon couple, Jasper/Maria and Maria is not a bitch or evil at all and I'm not sure I could ever put him with Alice or want to. This Alice needs to grow up alot.

LOL it knows I was searching for Cheaterward!

btw the first Rosalie story you recced was so good. Edward is always an oblivious asshole and I actually sympathized with Rosalie for once!

Phew! What a relief! For a while there i got scared that big brother really knows something we don't and was dropping us hints through the ads.   :-\ and yeah, i do need to lose weight  ;D 8)

See? I was thinking along the same lines a Booked! But yes, it now makes sense...I don't get any ads as I have Ad Block on all my devises... I'd rather donate.

I've been gone for a little while...  did I miss any amazing recommendations?   And did anyone read Deviant yet?  That one is still on my mind...  soo good!
Demaris...  you had me at TBH! ;-)  I haven't read anything else by this author...  I'm afraid I'll be comparing it all to TBH which I consider the best books ever written, hands down!    EVER!

So if I'm going to try something else by her would you start with Red Leaves?

I started with TBH but all her stories are good; she's a talent, end of. I think I read Tully after TBH but I'd advise Red Leaves, it's a whodunit too and fantastic.

I'm all for reading a story where Tanya is an amazing friend/sister (Glycerine, Stolen) or has her own story line away from Edward (In the Debris, which is one of my top 15 favourite fics!) In fact I'm soooo over Tanya being the bitch/slut/psychotic/ other love interest...I wonder? Is there a Tanya Is Great forum on FFN?

Yeah Long Way Home is pretty good, isn't it? That's a good (in terms of character development) Rosalie. Did you read the O/S it was continued from?

I get some interesting ones that I can kind of trace back to searches I've made.  I'm still waiting for a picture of Prince Albert to show up from a piercing studio.  Goes well with the erectile disfunction ads and penile implant emails. Because if I implanted a penis and gave it ED medicine, I probably wouldn't need my husband. :D :D :D :D :D

I've had so many ED and penis enlarging emails sent to me lately and me being well, me - I've sent them to my ex's fiance.
You know, just in case she needs ideas on what to get him for a wedding present next month.  :P :P

LOL! I love it!

In First & Ten, Emmett forwarded a bunch to a competing quarterback who was recently outed (at the time the story was written) for sending pics of his um member by text to some woman who works for a different team. She probably encouraged it. They may have had a fling. But he was married so it was a big thing when it came out. Only I don't think it was a big thing so Emmett had to get involved :D :D :D :D

I just delete them. Though once in a while I want to email them back and ask if they provide a man to go with the implant. I figure if I sound crazy enough, maybe they'll take me off their list. ;)

I'm with you.  I could only maybe read a non-E/B if one or the other wasn't in the story.

And?  Other than E/B? I am mostly okay with non-canon couples.  I've seen some where Rose is such a B*tch, Emmett finally dumps her and finds someone else.  And some where Alice ends up with someone other than Jasper.  ;D

For me, for the most part, I'm strictly Bellward with the others as outliers and cannon. Though, I am totally open with the multi-partner relationships  ;) especially if it mfm ;D though groups are okay, too. I don't know, I guess it's vicarious living at it's best cause I would never have the courage to do something like that, though wouldn't it be fun? :57:

I'm not sure how I feel about Twifics that have a multi relationship going on, but there are a few potterfics that I love where that is the case, Although it's polygyny (M/F/F/...) that is what is going on in those fics.

I love HP fan fics too. Those were the first ones I was introduced to, then I branched out to Twilight. I was reading the Trio and everything, but I like the HP books too much to want to imagine them different, and to be honest, the ones I read at first weren't all that great and kind of turned me off them. I love the Jily pairings or pretty much anything Marauder era. I just think that there is more room to play with there, and to be honest, the character development when it comes to them is more interesting.

Not sure if you were talking about the Potter fandom in general or just Jilly, but there's definitely more emphasis on character development in the Potter fandom than there is in the Twiverse.  That said, atleast for the fics I read, they also tend to be much longer, in chapter length and overall chapter number.  The writing style is also relatively different, as there is a larger amount of exposition, whereas the Twiverse is much more dialogue and romance driven.

Honestly, I'm not even sure how well a fleshed out Twific with a deeper look into developing characters would be met.  I've seen it done successfully, but they seem to be the exception rather than the norm.  There also seems to be a more ingrained idea of how the characters should be, as opposed to be open to shaping the characters as in the Potterverse.

But I digress, I suppose I should mention that I love a fic with good character development.

Every single fanfic complaint I have is usually regarding Twific. I have caught myself thinking "This only happens with Twilight!"  :(

Isaac Donald was 4.29 kg (9lbs 7.3 oz).  Everything went smoothly and we are back home get adjusted to 2 kids.  We just went yesterday to register him so his name is official and there won't be an Isaac Calrissian.

That's another interesting thing. How many of us here have tatoos and how many? I know this was asked last year but the spreadsheet wasn't born yet  ;D

Have always been fascinated by them. Wanted to get some on my ankle to cover my scars brought on by my allergies. I no longer wear shorts or skirts or gone swimming since 2007 as the scars really stand out bec am so white (well, chinese white  :P).  But my doctor wouldn't allow me to as it might cause me more allergies.

No tattoos for me either, although I have considered getting one once I am sure I am done with babies with some combination of the important dates in my life, but I'll have to wait and see.  Surprising even though during labor I told my husband we were done at 2, now I'm not positive (even with the late night feedings).

I'm kinda stuck in a Real Book bubble at the moment! :P And I was just updating/downloading a few on my iPad for the weekend and I came across Pat Conroy's The Prince Of Tides, I first read this as a 'book' about 15 years ago I think, I still have it sitting proudly on my book shelf, and recently I downloaded an e-version, just because. If ever the world was ending and I had to choose only 2 'books' to take into the bunker with me The Prince of Tides would be one..It is hands down one of the best books I've ever read..

I'd really be interested in hearing which books you ladies would have to have with you. And yes, I know with our new electronic devises that's not so much of an issue but, with a nuclear fall out, etc. there would be no electricity and so no charging, eventually.

And as an aside, no tattoos for me. I do like to see an artistic piece, like a full back tattoo or a full sleeve of ink, but I was always too worried about having one and changing my mind about the design. Removal looks more painful than the original application.  :o
