ADULT DISCUSSION HERE, SO TRY TO KEEP IT CLEAN! UM NO, WAIT! IF YOU ARE EASILY OFFENDED, LOOK AWAY NOW!

Okay, here is a place to discuss what you are reading, ask for recommendations and complain about the writing.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, so please play nice

Because we know drypen's watching

Is the tax added to the what's on the price tag or is it added at the register?

Here, if something is marked as $5, it costs $5 (the taxes are included), but I remember when I was a kid visiting the States for the first time, having to constantly go back and get more money from Mum or Dad when it was time to actually pay for something.

And tipping? We don't usually tip here. I always feel awkward tipping - I never know what to tip for or how much to tip! What are the rules in the US and Canada?

The taxes are added at the register, so you might need a calculator or flex those brain muscles. We're so used to just having extra money to cover for tax. Food is not taxed but services are, so be wary of that. Tipping is not mandatory but it's not 'nice' to not tip so most people do, you're expected to tip. Some waitresses make minimum wage (about $9.75-$10) so tips help, but if the service is horrible then don't bother  :P.

Don't know yet about Canada.  In the US, most of the time the tax is on top of the listed price unless it expressly says tax included.

Tipping in the US - depends on what you're tipping for, but the range is 10-20%, with table service at a restaurant normally 15-20% (of pre-tax amount) and almost everything else closer to 10%.   Tipping for maid service in hotels didn't used to be standard, but I think it's becoming more prevalent and it's not a percentage, just like tipping a valet or someone who carries your bags isn't.  I'm sure there's a tipping guide on the internet and I know you have mad google skills.

Edit: good point on the wage earned by waiters. In the US, employers are allowed to pay less than minimum wage to waitstaff who get tips.  They get to figure in some amount based on average tips so that wage and average tips bring the hourly rate up to minimum wage.

Sales tax is normally in addition to price. Don't know why. Other than online.  Tips are usually 15 to 20% of the pretax cost.  Most of the time I just double the tax as it's 8 to 9%  unless the service was exceptional.

  • Hi! I'm Ellachanted and I'm a fanfic-oholic.
So I may have messed up my computer.  I wanted to update to Windows 8.1. But it said I needed a specific update first.  So I ran the updates. Then I got error messages about Dropbox.  So I deleted it. Then Windows 8.1 won't download.  Now it's trying to update something & it won't shut down.  I think it's stuck. So I may get to test out my system image I made before I started.  But tomorrow.  I'm too tired tonight.  :P

Why do I like computers again????

I really hate PDF's  They are hard for me to read - the print is usually too small or a strange font that doesn't work well on anything but a computer.  So losing my collection of mobis and epubs would probably kill me.   :ohcrap:

Yeah I don't particularly like pdfs either, but hopefully if I loose my collection and I come across a fic in pdf that won't convert well, one of you will have it in another form and will send it to me if I ask real nicely.

Sounds great - which means ff.net will put it on their naughty list as soon as it updates!

You're so clever Booked - you really should try fic'ing something - even just a one-shot for a contest, perhaps?

I'll volunteer to beta for you.

Awwww, thanks! But writing more than 1 paragraph will be a challenge for me. Will leave it to the more talented writers here.  :)

I'm off to Canada at an ungodly hour in the morning.  I've never been.  I'm flying into SeaTac and driving. So I'm trying to decide if I'm going to put Forks on my itinerary.  It takes me out of the way since I'm headed to Vancouver, but I could take the ferry from somewhere near Forks to Victoria, then another ferry from Victoria to Vancouver.  What do you think?  Should I go out of my way?

I'm sooo excited!

Have a safe trip! Have never been to canada so let us know how it goes there!  :)

Hey, i just passed my 1,000th post! Not too chatty, i hope, after 1.5 years  :P

To pay tribute to this unbelievable achievement, decided to make a summary:

An Unconventional Friendship by Booked

There's a saying: People come into your life for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. Friendship that knows no faces, borders nor boundaries...only boobs, feet and height. Some don't understand how physical distance is overcome by friendship... Forging an inexplicably stronger connection thru a love for fanfiction, books, and Edward. Life experiences shared enriching each others lives... No judgments, just acceptance and support from all. A happy place to be, a friendship that could stand the test of time zones.

Twilight - Rated: XXX - English - Friendship/Humor - Threads: 5 - Words: no way can anyone keep up to count, despite our OCD - Reviews: non-stop - Favs: innumerable - Published:10-20-13- Mostly Bella, Edward - WIP (that everyone is willing to follow)

 :-*

I might be PMSing (NO! I will not use the damn Diva Cup!) but this post made me feel a tad emotional. Thank you Booked, you've hit the nail on the head in terms of the essence of this thread.  :-*

Work normally takes me to New York and LA, though this year, maybe Seattle as one of the companies I'm working with belongs to Paul Allen. But Forks? It is very unlikely I will ever see that tiny town so if you have the opportunity OF COURSE you should go!. Take pictures of the sign, the diner, Newtons Outfitters ( :D) and the High School!

I'm so excited!  :D :D

Oh meant to mention that I'm reading Colleen Hoover's novella called Finding Cinderella...  it's about Sky/Holder's friends Six/Daniel.   It's SOOOOO good.

Flove Collen Hoover! I can't remember Six and Daniel....That means I'll have to re-read Slammed and Point of Retreat, again!! Whoop Whoop!  Everyone should read Slammed!

You are braver than me.  Usually when I'm in a foreign country I prefer public transport, but this trip is mixed and...it's Canada!  How different can it be?

I guess I'll find out.

I don't even drive in Mexico.  Well, maybe once...many, many years ago. But those people are crazy!

I'm the same, the idea of driving on the wrong ( :D :D) side of the road makes me break out in a sweat. I tend to rely on taxis or public transport or travel with a braver person then I am....

This is the reason why service is so lousy here on Australia. Waitstaff get paid the same amount no matter how slack they are or how great they are.
Same here..UK's customer service is appalling! I just don't think the UK  is 'service' oriented...most of the time service staff have SAFs and attitudes to match with no incentive to change as they get paid the same regardless. When here I use my tip as a reward, you provide a pleasant dining/drinking experience, I'll tip you, if you don't, I wont, simple.

I'm adding Beaches and Boardwalks to my list... it's short right?  Maybe I can squeeze that in before the release of Allegiant on Thursday.  Anybody else have a rec for a short one (though a little more than a one shot).

They are from Hopeless actually...   Six is her friend that lives next door (windows face each other) and she texts her from her trip abroad in the beginning.    And Daniel was Holder's best friend.  These two didnt know each other as far as I know (in Hopeless).   Neither of them had a very big role in Hopeless.    I love that she released this as a freebie!   I can't wait until she writes more books.   For now I thinks he only has the Hopeless and Slammed series, right?

Ficfangirl - Definitely go to Forks!  I'd love to hear about it. :)  Just be careful around any folks that seem extremely pale or sparkly.  ;-)

Booked - Loved the summary!!  Happy 1000th post!

I am no writer but I know that there are many ways of reading the fic.  I went the sweet E/B route because I am lazy.

I will stick to the sweet however, because it's a redeeming kind of love story when all is said and done.

Ok, so as another Canadian on the board, I can fill in a few blanks for you. In Canada is the tax is added at the til, however not all provinces in Canada charge provincial sales tax, known as PST. If you ever venture in to Alberta, they don't have provincial tax. We only have to worry about Federal tax know as GST and that isn't charged on everything. Basic food items for example are exempt.

If you are driving, don't American cars show both kilometers and miles on the speedometer? The cars here in Canada have both?

Tipping, if the service is good, I have no problem giving a tip and if not I don't. I also try to give my tips directly to who I want to have it, and try to tip in cash if possible. I was told that they have to claim their tips when they do their taxes and it wasn't always like that.
