Thread #4 - We are crazy talkers here!

ADULT DISCUSSION HERE, SO TRY TO KEEP IT CLEAN! UM NO, WAIT! IF YOU ARE EASILY OFFENDED, LOOK AWAY NOW!

Okay, here is a place to discuss what you are reading, ask for recommendations and complain about the writing.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, so please play nice

Because we know drypen's watching

Me too.  I used to read  800 page stories so charging the same price for a 250 page "Part 1" annoys me.

Or publishing part 1 for free, without mentioning that there are 8 more parts to come...

I don't buy ebook with a very low page count anymore!  >:(

Caged Skylark
Author: QuinnLark  PM
Broken Wings Chronicles #1 Journalist Bella Swan is assigned to work with the new guy, Jacob Black, on her own entertainment featured article. There is no way she can turn it down; it's the dream of a lifetime. However, Bella didn't bargain for the beautiful man she would work with, nor Edward—the sexy lead singer of the band they are to follow. Will she fly or come crashing down?
Follow/FavoriteRated: Fiction M - English - Angst/Romance - Bella & Edward - Chapters: 23 - Words: 102,922 - Reviews: 389 - Favs: 189 - Follows: 370 - Updated: 07-03-13 - Published: 12-11-12 - Status: Complete - id: 8786875

So, this was just completed. I do not recommend it as it doesn't have a fanfic hea.

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.
[/spoiler]

Also the end was rushed.

The author said there is an HEA in the sequel... I disagree on the rushed ending, also.

I haven't bought many ebooks at all, at least fiction, since I started reading fanfics.  I don't read them.  Barnes & Noble has a Friday freebie - usually an older book by a writer that has a new book out.  I download them and started reading a few, but I get a few chapters in and go back to fanfic.   ;D

Unnecessary plot twists seems to be the norm in fics.  Actually, even a lot of books have them too.  Particularly the ones that are self-published that make you feel like you're reading fics with different character names.  :o

Actually, this leads me to a rant regarding the seemingly popular trend to publish books in serial format instead of just one frakking book.  I'm talking about the books that deal with one couple the whole series and how there's always more than a few  :wtf: moments.  Like book 1 is how they met and got together, book 2 is how they deal with being together and hints of some big, bad, dark secret, book 3 is about the fall out of that big, bad secret and the couple splits, book 4 has the couple back together after some alpha machinations on the H's part and the h falling into his peen hypnosis, book 5 has the h pregnant and feeling like a beached whale and the H doesn't tell the h that his new, oversexed, young secretary has her over-sized boobs all up in his face and her fingers all up and down his business and it goes on and on.  Obviously, I'm exaggerating it... a bit, but not by much.  I mean, c'mon!  Just write the dang story without me having to question the HEA in book 9 that seemed so concrete in book 2!  Is it just me?

This is why I wait for a whole series to be out before I start it.

I found it!  All the talk about kittens reminded me of a pic I had seen.

I love this one too.  He looks kind of Edward-y.    >:D

Yeah, I read more fanfic than books too but I also read some books, especially when I'm in a fic down and can't find anything to read...
But tuebl saved me tons of money  ;)

I don't mind book series, what we rant about are books that should be one book but are sold in several parts. Imagine Twilight being sold as 4-5 parts ;)

Someone mentioned that fanfic where Bella is an afro american dancer and Edward is a firefighter yesterday:

You were all talking earlier about sequels.

I quite like the new twist where instead of reading about the same couple through 3 or 4 stories the secondary characters are the subject of the sequels.  This way, you still get to find out what happens with the primary couple whilst keeping the story interesting.

Lori Foster did a bunch of those that I really liked. They were all related in some way, with a mix of romance, mystery and action.  Most of the guys were some kind of martial arts fighters or something like that.  Then she did another set of 4 brothers.  Great stories.

I also don't mind sequels in things like mysteries, where you have the same characters like in the Scarpetta stories or Catherine Coulter's FBI series.  There is always a romance with a new couple, you have the old couples show up, and a good mystery.  Except I haven't read the last couple because I can't seem to read anything without Edward and Bella. Sad I know.... :P

I have been in a bit of a fic slump recently so have been reading a few books. I am reading The Crooked Creek series by Molly O'Keefe.  Lauren gave the 3rd story in this series 5 stars so I thought I would give them a try.  I couldn't start at number 3 though, so am currently about three quarters of the way through book 2.

I have to agree with Lauren - they are really good.

I don't mind a long running series, either about the same couple, or a different couple every time, so long as each book has an ending. I really HATE this new trend of an author writing a nice long book, and then chopping it up into 3 or 4 (or more!) parts, but still charging just as much. I HATE serials with a fiery passion, and won't even give them a shot. Five bucks a pop, times 9 parts- 45 bucks to finish up one story? WTF is that crap?

I can deal with a cliffhanger designed to set up the next part in the series, but too many of these just.....stop. No resolution to the current plot at all, and it's frustrating.

Exactly! I mentioned Gone With The Wind to a certain very young fanfic reader/writer that we all know *cough Lauren cough*

(actually, I mentioned Ferris Bueller and was so horrified that she hadn't seen such a "classic"  :D film, long story short . . . I threw a few real classics at her. . .  :ecomcity: . . . Gone With The Wind.)

Anyway, that had me thinking that if GWTW was released nowadays, it would be some epic 10 part series too.

Apart from the obvious $ made by selling more than one book, I wonder if this is a reflection on society nowadays.

Are publishers making the assumption that people are no longer able to sit through a massive book? Have we really become this ADHD, fast paced, electronic game world where our attention span cannot be sustained for any longer than 5 minutes?

What worries me the most is that sometimes - and more frequently! - I look at how many pages a fic/book has before I start reading it because sometimes - more often! -  I just want a really quick, really dumb read that I don't have to even think about.  :-[

Although society is becoming more fast-paced with short attention spans, I think the serials are based on money and marketing. If people are willing to buy one book chopped into 4 or 9 parts, that's how they'll sell it. I'd be curious to know real sales data on comics and/or graphic novels, which used to be best-sellers then took a nose dive and now seem to have a slightly larger audience. With those, people keep coming back for more. They're even used in newer teaching methods.

But I'm one of those people who look at a page count and will doubt reading it if it's too short. I'm currently reading Bobby Hutchinson's - A Lantern In The Window, which I almost didn't start because the epub is only 98 pages. Lauren rec'd it though, so I'm willing to give it a go. I like a story that I can sink my teeth into, which generally means lots of pages. With fanfics I rarely read one shots, almost never read a published work with less than 100 pages unless it's part of a completed series. In those cases, I think of each 'book' as a collection of chapters--it eases my mind to think of it that way. I'd be really angry if I purchased them that way. That's what libraries are for! My purchases are usually limited to 350 pages or more. Sign me up for GWTW! That's worth the price!

Agree with you girls! The one i am reading now is 12 frigging parts! you all know my WIP phobia, but I thoguht this one only had 4 parts... Got sucked in and waiting for the last 2 to come out late July and August. (Ava Claire's His Submissive).

I do like those series Ella mentioned, Catherine COulter's FBI series  (Sherlock and Savich!). I also like Julia quinn's bridgerton series, Stephanie Lauren's Cynsters series on the historical side.

So i finished part 10 of His Submissive last night and good thing it didn't end much in a cliff hanger or else I would have been royally pissed.

I started jenny0719's Melt With You, only a short 40 pages but was too tired to finish it. I really liked what I've read so far...she wrote one of my top 10, The man Who Can't be Moved...
