  • Hi! I'm Ellachanted and I'm a fanfic-oholic.
Thread #4 - We are crazy talkers here!

ADULT DISCUSSION HERE, SO TRY TO KEEP IT CLEAN! UM NO, WAIT! IF YOU ARE EASILY OFFENDED, LOOK AWAY NOW!

This is the new thread as the other was sooo long and had lots of pages. Continuation of our wonderful discussions on Twilight Fanfiction, Books, and Life in general.  But mostly Twilight fanfics... and life stuff that will get me a NOT ALLOWED statement.

Okay, here is a place to discuss what you are reading, ask for recommendations and complain about the writing.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, so please play nice

Because we know drypen's watching

I am not a writer - definitely not a writer! - but I have become a little more involved with the fanfic writing process in the last few months. Any advice I give will probably sound more like creepy weird stalking though!  :P

A lot of chat about new fics happens on twitter, so get yourself a twitter account and start following the writers you like. Then, see who they follow - that will then connect you to some of the sites for promoting fics, like You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login and You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login. I'm not really sure of the process but I believe that you can submit your story.

Also, You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login has a daily What The Fic campfire, and also a weekly Sneak Peek campfire You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login You can post your summary there.

There are also other sites (that I can't think of at the moment) that allow you to post teasers, etc.

Now, this is my totally uneducated and unsubstantiated advice:
Don't hold your readers at random for reviews - "I'll post the next chapter when I get X reviews". Some of the best fics don't have a high review count. Also, some of us (ME!) don't read WIPs, so your reviews might not come until you have hit the complete button.

Be consistent in updating - pick a schedule and stick as closely as you can to it.

Keep your a/n's to a minimum - we want the fic, not a journal of your life!

Be prepared for mundane reviews, reviews that don't say anything about your writing, or reviews that totally destroy any self worth that you have. Some readers are just cruel and bitter and want to make you feel that way about yourself!

Stick to your guns - if you have a story mapped out, don't change it because your readers just want sexy fun times or a HEA or a particular Edward or Bella image. It's your story, so tell it the way you want to tell it!

And now I'm taking a wander over You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to check you out!  ;)

Thanks for the links!!

I totally agree with you regarding staying true to my ideas, criticism, and consistent updates. Just added chapter 2!

I'm a teacher and currently off for the summer, so I'm using my freedom to write and finish a piece that I'm excited about. Deadlines suck, but they're great in the long run.

Thanks again for all the advice and tips  :) You all are marvelous

Has anyone read The Daily Grind by Emotion Masen?

Author: Emotion Masen  PM
A year ago Bella Swan had it all, attending college, friends, a boyfriend and her family. Then in one night her entire world came crashing down never to be the same. Edward Cullen recently requested for a job transfer. Relocating to Seattle, to run from his own problems, Edward was determined to never fall victim to another woman. That is until he meets Bella at a coffee house.

I just can't seem to get into it and the writing is coming across as slightly immature.  It may just be that I'm not in the mood for it at the moment but, I would like to know if it is worth the read.

EDIT - I just checked out her previous works and have flounced at least half of them - I guess I answered my own question!   :D

I read this. It started out pretty good but by chap. 25 I started skimming. She dragged this out waaaay too long. The more you read the more bizarre it got. I would not rec.

45 chapter, started posting in October 2009.

Talk about building suspense! No a/n's. No author profile.

This is why I have WIPhobia!!!

Sadly this is one of the WIP's I read.

But i'm so excited, I'm off to read.

Edward Masen is the star of a top Dance Academy. Bella Swan is just the first year new girl who Edward teaches for partnering. But as an unfathomable connection emerges in the moonlit ballet studio, Edward and Bella become the breathtaking, beautiful combination of skill and passion. How can this work, though, when Edward refuses to acknowledge their dance had ever happened?

I read this one, and it was good but

So sorry!!!!!  Okay *moves it down the TBR List...way down*  I don't really like character death.  Though I guess Bella dies in a lot of the stories I read....  And now that I think about it, Edward is already dead too.

But I'm assuming you aren't talking undead..... ;D ;D

No, definitely read it. It's so good and I like their banter, Bella calls Edward flower child. :D

And I will tell you the Spoiler that Astro didn't tell you, or did she?

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

I never considered that 'too angst-y' but it definitely is. And I probably gave to much away. 8)

When I re-read a fic I can only get half way through (if even) before I have to find something else to read.  No matter how much i love it. Anyone have the same problem?

Yep - I'm not a re-reader. If I do, I tend to skim, and skim lightly at that.

I think I want to re-read Emancipation Proclamation because I read it as a WIP, or maybe read Sempre, but I also worry that I might not like it as much, and I have such fond feelings for it.

So my little walk down fanfic memory lane today has brought me to another slightly angsty but romantic HEA You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login.

This was one of the very first twifics I read. It was a WIP and I just loved it!

It was published as Ready to Love Again by Annalyse Knight on her website You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

She has a very long note about this on her ff.net profile: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

I love this one too, I've only read it once.

I didn't read everything in her profile, but she says she wishes the story wasn't 'out there'. You know like now she published her book she wishes the original copy wasn't floating in the internet  :021:

Which 2 are in your top 10?   Sideline collison and which other?      I do love hockey, so tMAoBS is tempting!  I just realized that Nolebucgrl also wrote Words with Friends!   I loved that one (top 10 for me) so will definitely have to read more of hers.   I think I have First & Ten on my kindle too.    Now I'm curious how she can write two footballwards without the stories being too similar.  I have confidence that she did a great job!

Is Tropic of Virgo super angsty?   I love musicianward also!  ;)
Thank you!  CaraNo also wrote something I liked...  I need to go figure out what that was!   :)   So, is Misapprehension lemony?  :D

My top 2 in your TBR were SC and TMoBS. I would suggest you read First and Ten, TMoBS then SC. You might want to insert an actorward in between so you get a breather and don't start confusing the stories  :) Have you read Sexy Silk? I would definitely rec that too.

May I be annoyingly unaware for a moment to ask a few questions regarding writing/posting a fic?

From doing a lot of perusing lately, I've found thousands of fics posted; some being worth the read and others, well...not so much.

I'm working on a fic of my own currently and am curious about the posting process. I've heard of the peverbial "fic pimping" and don't want to be an annoyance to others, etc. From anyone's experience here, what are your thoughts? How have you gone about it if you've posted a fic?

Or perhaps I am over-analyzing...
Nothing I've written has been really popular, so I couldn't really tell you anything about getting thousands of reviews but I can tell you the ways I've pimped stories in the past.

1 - Get a twitter or facebook account under your pseudonym. Follow lots of people in the fandom and most will follow back - try to initiate conversations so that they're more likely to read chapters when you post the link to them on your account.
2 - As Astro mentioned, A Different Forest. They have daily 'campfires' where you can post the link to your story after you've updated and also a 'Sneak Peek' campfire every Monday where you can post a teaser (excerpt) from an upcoming chapter.
3 - Fictionators. They run a teaser Monday, where again you submit excerpts from upcoming chapters - though this has to be done in advance of the Monday in order to be posted.
4 - Review, review, review. It's the most important thing - you make friends that way, and also people are much more likely to review your fic if they recognise your name from reviewing their own.
5 - Make sure editing is spot on. You can pimp all you like, but unless the quality is there people aren't likely to read it regardless.

So that's a few of the ways to 'pimp' your fic, as it were. If ever you want more specific advice or anything writing related, feel free to PM me :)

So it is an HEA! But that particular character death is a bummer. I guess it will remain in my TBR for a while.  :(

Got sidetracked. Instead of starting the Gravity series of drotuno, a saw that a book i thought was complete at 4 parts will actually have 12! Got sucked in to catching up with books 5-10. Hope it doesn't end in too much of a cliff hanger bec the next two are in July and August yet!  :o it's the His Submissive series.

I am also not a re-reader.   I can't actually think of anything I've ever re-read except the Harry Potter books.   LOL  Oh wait, and Twilight of course!

I did skim quickly through the first two Crossfire books before reading book 3, but that doesn't really count.

I plan to do a full reread in December before Gabriel's Redemption comes out.   Like you, I'm a little afraid that it won't be as awesome as I remember it.   It is so far over and above all the other books on my favorites list that I really hope I'm not let down.  That would stink!
