I looked this up:
Urban Dictionary: bodice ripper
An historical romance where the heroine has lots of non-consensual sex, which becomes consensual. The book needs to have a gaudy cover with a woman with an extraordinarily long neck, heaving bosoms, and flowing hair, and a brooding man.

See Kim? Same definition I found when this topic first came up......

Okay, so all bodice rippers are historical, but not all historical romances are bodice rippers.  For example, Outlander wouldn't be a bodice ripper, but it would be historical.  Mostly bodice rippers have little real story, bad things happen to the heroine, The Hero is a bad guy or a rake.  They usually are forced into marriage. Or he forces her to have sex and she gets pregnant. When I was younger, it didn't bother me as much that half the time, the heroine got basically raped by the hero.  And really, in the times of the stories, this may have been normal. There is usually a lot of sex.  He is always really good at it.... probably because he's a rake LOL!

Spot on Ella, good breakdown.....And the protagonists are 99.9% of the time English, what's that all about? Can't any other nationality be rogues, rakes or scoundrels?  I have to say I've not read a BR since I was in school, for some reason the nuns would turn a blind eye to BRs but confiscate Jackie Collins, so I read a lot of BRs at 13-14 all they did was fill my head with utter rubbish.... :P

When I need to take a break or I'm home I've been rereading Emancipation Proclamation. I haven't read it since it was a Wip so it's interesting reading it all the way through.

So this mysterious picture was of Loopy's husband guns? ......Err? What kind of 'guns'?

And talking of guns. Seventeen Minutes. Prologue. Is it too much to ask that a writer would at least check the first line, of the first paragraph, right at the start of the start of their story?!  >:(

"The shrill alarm went off, waking him from his slept."

...and again, still first paragraph

"Flipping it opened, he dialed the familiar number"
bear in mind we haven't even gotten out of the first scene of the prologue...It continues in this grammatical nightmare...which I can't post without completely giving away the plot.....Now regardless, of how good the premise of this story is,  by the looks of it, I'm going to be stuck in grammar hell for the foreseeable future.. :(

I have done that but I keep getting this

calibre, version 2.3.0
ERROR: Same as current: The location C:\Users\CarolineS\Documents\Calibre Library\Calibre Library contains the current calibre library
And it is not recognizing the library?  Is that where you put it?  Try putting it in a different folder and see if it will find it then.  The other solution is to add all the books again.  It will normally pick up all the metadata.  I had my library get messed up during one of my hard drive changes.  I ended up having to re-add the entire thing.  Left it running all night. All the books were retrieved but some of the metadata didn't come back.  Only for about 3 or 4 books, so I just put it in manually.

It definitely sucks when you have to redo it all, but it is easier the second time - use the Add Books/add books from different directories including sub-directories (one book per directory assumes each book of a different format is the same book.  This will import the library the way caliber sets it up.

Let me know if either solution doesn't work. ;D

I read a few with Americans.  And maybe one Spanish pirate. The Rosemary Rogers ones were pretty much Americans, with some Mexican, Spanish and French guys thrown in.  But then, in the 1800's there were a lot of French and Spanish people in Mexico and Southern US.

But mostly, I didn't read that many.  I got a little bored with them after a while.  I usually stuck with Harlequins between all the horror, sci-fi/fantasy, and mysteries I would read.  Harlequins were good palate cleansers....

But "utter rubbish" is a good way to describe them....

I've never read any of Maya Banks' stories so I can't say for sure.  I just know that the one's that were disappointed with the one you wanted to read liked her other series better.  Actually, they all seem to like her contemporary ones more.

If you've never read one, it is good to read one. The other author I've loved was Laurie McBain.  As I said, I read them about 20+ years ago when I was in high school.....

I've only heard of the term "bodice rippers" in recent years. Never bothered looking up the meaning and just assumed, since these historical books would have these type of covers, then that's how the term was born.

I've read a lot of historical romances. Pardon my memory but the only one i can really think of that fits the bill is this and i absolutely LOVED it! 5 stars. :)

This is truly non-consensual sex in the beginning but, man, the way it was written and the situation why it happened was "acceptable" to me. Think i read this book 6 times. This was way back in HS and i would only buy books from 2nd hand bookstores after i've saved up my allowance. Only had a few books during my school years hence i tend to re-read a lot then.

Aside from Shanna, my other all time favorites are:
Read this 10 times

You will note Gentle Rogue and Fires of Winter has the requisite girl with boobs almost popping out, embraced by a ruggedly-handsome-built guy. Many books of Johanna Lindsey has the model Fabio on them. No internet then, so my fantasies were based on the cover of these historical and Mills & Boon books.  :P

You HAVE to read these 4 books!!  :)

Wow, so much discussion about bodice rippers!  I simply must try one of them out!  Someone has to tell me what a rake is though.  I have so much to learn.

I stopped reading bodice rippers ages ago - I don't really have a good reason other than I was reading other stuff other than them.   A rake - is - um- a bad boy? with manners? dashing - like Roarke from InDeath before he civilized himself - which doesn't really help you any if you haven't read the InDeath series - or bodice rippers for that matter.   Anything by Barbara Cartland wouldn't qualify.......

I cut my romance reading teeth on the bodice ripper back in the 80s. Probably WAY before I should have been reading that stuff, but my mom was never one to put limits on what I read, so long as it wasn't straight up p0rn.

I used to love authors like Johanna Lindsey, Judith Mcnaught, Jude Devereaux, Katherine Woodiwiss, and then more modern authors like Lisa Kleypas, I love Kleypas' historical romances.

I've read a couple of Maya Banks contemps, but they weren't to my taste. I just don't like BDSM books in general, and the one series I picked up (Sweet something) was all BDSM.

LMAO DEMARIS your new sig hah  :D

I feel like my ebook reading has turned into a pile of mush now that I'm away from twific.

I got stuck on an erotic historical romance kick for a minute last week. Idk I kinda like the plot in the House of Pleasures series by Kate Pearce, and found myself skimming through all the lemons in most of them. She adds in a threesome in almost every single story and I guess it's just about the sex because it doesn't add anything to the plot or the relationship.

For awhile a couple years ago I was OBSESSED with the bodice rippers by Bertrice Small. Mostly the Skye O'Malley stories, and that would definitely be defined as a bodice ripper because thr main character was married to an ass and was eventually sold into slavery where she was part of a harem and had to over come a ton of obstacles, and eventually builds an empire, marries a pirate and find herself related to the royal court at one point.

Twilighty things: The Consequences of Miracles was SO good, I think I mentioned it last week. It felt like a punch in the gut. I also loved Upstream, or Swimming Against The Tide by pbswimmer. Yes, it was a mess but I loved it. So dramatic and I was not used to a POV from nearly every damn character you meet.

I randomly thought of theFicChick story Objects In Mirror Are Closer Than They Appear that she put out earlier this year and raged for a minute. I've never been more disappointed in a story and was so mad I wasted time reading it. It had such promise but seemed more like a summary to a lifetime movie. Boy loves girls, boy hurts girl, girl flees, boy turns into an emo baby about his one true love, boring boy and girl meet in the future and attempt to repair their once loving relationship.

He's caught only a glimpse of her from the window of his carriage, but the young Russian prince knew he had to have her. Within minutes, Lady Katherine St. John was dragged from the London street like a common waif and carries off to a sumptuous town house...

Though Fires of Winter is very good too, SF is the one i read repeatedly.
After reading so many books, you tend to confuse the titles and the stories.Their covers are also very similar... But those that i really loved, and read several times, should have been easy for me to remember...arrrrggghh, the pitfalls of ageing  :-[ :confounded:

Just wanted to share my "thrilling" meeting this morning with clients from an American firm. The American visitor almost made me cream my pants. I kid you not, he looked sooooo much like Johnny Castle! Squeeeeeeee, it was like, am i fcking dreaming or what??!! I was posting a pic of him on this thread just an hour before my meeting! Did i conjure him up from my fantasy?! :P

While we were waiting for the others to arrive, i stood up and told my officemate "can i have a word with you outside". When we stepped out of the conference room, i pulled out my phone and showed her a pic of JC. "Can you tell me if that guy looks like the guy in this pic?" She said "yes! who is the guy in the pic?" i said "a p0rn star i watch".  :P She burst out laughing and said: "you're really crazy! How am i gonna look at that guy without mentally undressing him now?!" I said, "join the club." :P :D :D

we put on our game face and went back in to start the meeting. I was super conscious to act business-like when he would look at me while giving his spiel. I so just wanted to do this and stare

But thankfully was able to make the appropriate comments and facial expressions like this

It's so hard to act proper and respectable when your imagination runs wild during meetings  :D :D :D

That guy sure made my day! Never have the words "it was a pleasure meeting you" been so sincere on my part... And he had a nice firm handshake, smooth strong hand, with no ring  ;)  :D :D :D
