Just a few pics of what we got here on long island with the snow.  I am thankful we did not get hit as hard as Conneticut with close to 3 ft or even eastern long Island with 30 inches.

I realise that snow like that must make for a giant headache, but it looks beautiful. I also imagine you snuggled up inside, hot chocolate or Irish coffee, soup and toasted sandwiches, and nothing to do but read on the coach.

I didn't officially get days off because of flooding - the road was under so unless I has a boat, I could t get to work. And even if I did have a boat, I wasn't getting near that filthy snake and food infested water! The smell is killing me now - rotting vegetation (and animals), stagnant water and 35c days does not a pretty perfume make!

Carano uploads all of her fics as a PDF. No need to flagfic them. Just save.

Yeah I get the feeling that sometimes the 'Teacher" does not like to be "Taught"

They rarely ever do! And the ones coming out of uni? :pulling Some are barely literate or numerate but they know absolutely everything about everything! I had a 17 year old first year student interrupt a lesson last year to correct me on WHAT and HOW I was teaching a maths concept! Apparently she didn't agree with the pacing and content of the lesson and my 20 years experience was worth nothing!

A good teacher would appreciate your feedback - done politely and in a non-confrontational manner, of course - and would actually use it as a teaching point. Mind you, a good teacher would know that both choices are acceptable and in common use and would be able to explain that to a parent and to their class without being offended.

Quite frankly, some teachers suck!!!

When I was in Vietnam last year, locals were so impressed and respectful when I told them I was a teacher. When they found out I was a principal, it was almost as if I was a God!

Here in Australia, when I tell people that I'm a teacher, I usually get an eye roll and comments about how many holidays we get! I think a lot of teachers have brought this on themselves with defensive and condescending attitudes and unprofessionalism!

Being on PTS at work isn't unprofessional though, is it???

I do love it when people say "I never had a teacher/principal like you when I was at school".

As for the maths, we might do it differently here, but the idea is that we teach kids to understand what they're doing so that they can apply it in real life and in different contexts.

Without bragging...*bullshit! This is totally bragging!*, in 2012, 95% of the kids in my school were in the top 10% of the nation in maths.

Actually, that's probably not so impressive - it only compares us across the nation. Throw in some Asian kids or Swedish/Danish/Norwegian kids, and my kids would probably look like the village idiots.

I'll take what I can get though!

And I have to say, I agree with you Astro. Teachers are wholly unappreciated in Australia. It doesn't help that they get paid diddily-squat and the Uni entrance cut-off is getting lower and lower. My mothers friend is a teacher and she complained last year that the student teacher she got couldn't do the year 6 spelling or maths herself, let alone teach them! She was trying to spell defence with an i and an s!  :o

When I was in America staying with Family friends her daughter was learning about Australia at school, so they had a spelling test on that theme, the teacher didn't even spell Australia right!

I think spelling and grammar abilities are diminishing all over the world where we have things such as spell-check, when you take them away people just don't know what to do with themselves. Quite sad really; if people just cared a bit more, I mean I'm dyslexic and just that little bit of effort reduces my mistakes right down to the occasional one.

So if you girls don't hear from me for a few weeks it's because I've decamped to the Mojave Desert.  I hear tales you can find Edward in a cave completely feral! Then you take him home, clean him up, teach him to talk " I want suck" (Oh, yes my girlfriends! You read right!)  and he becomes like a well trained puppy dog; complete with sparkling green eyes and a smirk! Got my camping gear already, all I'm waiting for is for this frigging snow to let up so that I can distinguish my car from the other snow covered obstacles on the side of the road. Then, Heathrow Airport, here I come!!!

When I approached this teacher last time it was to point out an error on the sheet they had to learn from.  I wasn't confrontational, but she spoke back to me as though she had stepped in me!

Aww shucks.

I love my job and I love making a difference - hopefully a positive one - in kids' lives. I'm also really lucky that I have such a great staff - we have some odd (read abso-f*cking-lutely insane) parents but all the teachers/aides, etc are all on the same page aboutmaking our school a safe, stable and happy place for our kids.

I have some days when I want to scream, but overall, it's great...and for those bad days, well...that's why God invented vodka!

And half the time, people use acronyms and don't even know what they mean!

About 10 years ago, the state government started promoting Queensland as the SMART start - it was SMART this, and SMART that. I was at a conference and we were having SMART rammed down our throats, so I asked, in a room full of 100s of people, what SMART actually stood for.

No one knew! And the conference speakers actually said that they would find out.

A week later, I received an email saying that SMART wasn't an acronym - it just meant that we had to work smarter!  :-[
