Hi Everybody
« on: May 18, 2012, 06:27 AM »
Well, I've just relised that I've been a member of this forum for about a month now, and I haven't even bothered to introduce myself.  I know, I know how rude of me?

Well, better late than never!

Hi, I'm DarkGuyver and I'm an alcoholic.... HAHAHA just kidding.  I thought I would add a little humour to my introduction.

DarkGuyver, as some of you will probably relise from my screen name, I am a fan of the Guyver anime/manga francise.

I found this forum, while searching for more Tess Gerritsen (yes, I watch Rizzoli & Isles) eBooks for my Sony PRS-350 eReader, which I got a couple of months ago.  But found a surprisingly large amount of books for my eReader, which I am honestly thankfull for.

Besides reading, I like watchin action, sci-fi, thriller movies and TV shows.  I'm a martial artist, I'm a 3rd degree black belt in Shotokan Karate, and I currently study Lin Kuei martial arts (a Chinese martial art, which is the ancester of Japanese Ninjitsu).  I'm a videogamer, I'm a fan of Street Fighter, Bayonetta, God Of War, Soul Calibur, House Of The Dead, and the Need For Speed games (in particular the Underground series, and Most Wanted).

I'm very knowledgable about computers so if you have any questions about computers or computer related problems post a topic and I will see what I can do for ya.  I'm also a technology nut, so any related technology discuss are game.

I hope to meet some new friends here and share some of my collection of eBooks which may be of interest to others.

Oh, that's awesome!  It's always nice to have the stress out of the way ... any ideas where you want to go for college?

No, I dont have much idea what stream I will take next year or what I want to be. 8) Right now everyone raises their brow and says "Isnt it high time you decided?"
I just know I want NOTHING to do with math, ever. I think I will study law. Lets see. My aptitude tests are up next month :-\

:D :D :D  When my son first was looking at colleges, they told the parents that it's not uncommon that students change their majors up to 6-7 times, and with prerequisites needing to done first for the most part, it definitely gives you time to figure something out!  I had thought I wanted to be a CPA; long story, but I didn't and the thought makes me cringe now! 8)  At least you have your break now that you can relax!

Why don't you play around on You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login and try a few of the college level 101 classes on there to get a feel for them?  No credit and you can withdraw at any time.  It will give you a taste of what is offered and might point you in the direction you want to go in.

I'm picking up Democratic Development [starts in 8 days but you need a foundation in Political Science] from Sanford and  Soul Beliefs: Causes and Consequences [the soul in religion] from Rutgers.  Both no credit and free.

Oh. For College, which is 2 years, I have to pick from : Arts, Science, Commerce.
After that comes Universities where there's engineering, medicine, law, humanities, etc etc etc

No way my parents would KILL me if I tried to change a thing, thats just not normal here. Some people do struggle between arts and science but after College its pretty much a waste to try and change anything. I just spent the past year fighting tooth and nail with my parents coz I dont want to take up medicine 8)

Yes my break....it just seems so odd, I have nothing to do. :P And no one seems to mind whatever I do. ???

Thank you philo, I'll check it out now. I want to do law, but I dont want to become a lawyer. More like administration, but not politics. Diplomat, maybe. But I think I lack exposure, I dont exactly know the world outside of the Science stream :( Lets see if the site helps me!
I just ended school so I only know the Phy, Chem, Bio, Math, Hist & Civics, Computer Apps Programming, Languages.
However next year I do plan to take Political Science, Psychology, Literature but it depends on what career I choose!

Thank you both!!

PHILO courses I have no problem with! Its just my career. Unless the course is full math I can manage.
My sister was not really cut out for medicine in the beginning and was super nervous, so the first 2 years I used to study with her, take her tests, ask her questions and make and correct her papers. So in a way I already did 1 course 8)

I didn't think you did.  What Coursera will let you do is explore different things at no cost to you.  At a a college level from very well known Universities.  Part of deciding what you want to do with your life is looking around and trying different things.  It would be a shame to  miss something you would love if you just never took the course.   And no matter what you take, any class will give you a firmer base in what you want to do.  It will allow you to converse with a broader range of individuals and help in networking your future.

I mean.. Take Film 101 or Intro to Guitar which is offered.  How about Relationships in Fiction?  Lots of choices there.

Thanks, I'm going to take the International Criminal Law, Property and Entrepreneur and EU Law courses. :)
I'm crap with films, I prefer the piano, and I love  literature but I'm not looking for a career in it.
This is exciting! Yes it feels like I want to do so many things, these few months I'm going to take all the courses on a whim :) :) :)

It's free.  Have a blast.
And try some things you aren't good at.  College is vastly different.  You  might find you actually like something you thought you hated.  I thought I hated math.  I don't.  I really like the logic behind Algebra and the like.  I ended up tutoring it.  In High School I got Ds

Coursera is online.  They will send you a notice when class is about to start and also explain to you how the class works.  It is run by profs at major Universities all over the world.  And unless noted otherwise, it is free.

Example: I have a course on Democratic Development that starts tomorrow I am currently enrolled in.  I will go on line to read and to listen to the lectures.  The tests will also be online.
