REQ: Whirlwind by Blondie akaRobin
« Reply #1861 on: August 12, 2012, 01:23 PM »
So, has anyone been able to find this or have a copy saved of Whirlwind by Blondie akaRobin?

Did a search but not finding anything uploaded.  I think this was pulled in 2009, so not sure how likely we are to find a hard copy of the fanfic version.    Recently published as original fiction.  Anyone have it it? :-*

OOPS, just read what Steve told Ella - I am so spoiled because Macs come with built in PDF software through Preview, so when I want to create a PDF on TWCS (or Twilighted, TwiWrite, etc.) I just use my printer function and specify "save as PDF" instead of "print".    I didn't realize that some PC users don't have that built in so using the TWCS download (or automatic download on other sites) doesn't work.   I'm sorry if I confused anyone.    But you should still be able to use FLAG to create PDF's or other types of files.[/i]

LOL! I do that all the time.  Answer a post only to find someone else already answered it.  :D :D :D

I have print to pdf loaded on all my computers - CNet has some great free downloads for this. So that is probably why I also didn't realize it wasn't a direct to pdf thing.   :P

AND Flagfic gives a linked table of contents.  Printing to pdf doesn't.  But then, I never almost never get pdfs of fanfiction if I can at all help it.  I really hate pdf's as they are not adaptable.  You can change the font size on an epub or mobi.  Plus there are so many free apps that will let you read either or both and they both convert well to other formats.   ;D

So, Ella, do you read mobi/epub files on your computer or iPad?   I can open epub files and read them through my Kindle for Mac application, but I can't seem to get the mobi files to open on my laptop or iPad with that application.   Which is weird because I thought Kindle was all about the mobi files?     I am thinking of investing in a reader (Kindle Fire) but just read a bunch of negative stuff today about their technology and now I'm thinking of waiting for the iPad tables coming out in September.   It's SOOOO CONFUSING!    I have started saving some stories to mobi/epub just in case, but for the most part I save everything in PDF because I read on my laptop.

I have a kindle e-ink reader and a Nook tablet with 16 gb.  I won't get the Kindle fire only because it does not have enough space.  8 gb is plenty for stories, but insufficient for anything else.  And they don't have the option for an SD card to extend the memory like the Nook has.  But any tablet has the option of downloading the Kindle app (mobi) or the Nook app (epub) so if you don't mind the back lighting, a tablet is more flexible. Just make sure it has an SD card option to extend your memory - well, unless you get an ipad.  Then it's not an option.  :P  My husband has a earlier ipad and reads on the Kindle app all the time.  ;)

The e-ink reader is all you need if all you are doing is reading.  And 2 or 4 gbs is plenty.  I have had around 1400 stories on my kindle at one point and it was only half full.   ???

On the computer, I use the kindle app for mobi and Calibre for epub normally.  Also, Calibre has the option to remove DRM from purchased ebooks so you can then change them to other formats.  This has come in handy having both a Kindle and a Nook.  >:D ;)

I know that this dislike is linked to fanfic downloading formats, but I like PDFs and I’m not ashamed to admit it!  That's right!  You heard me - I LIKE PDFs and I’ll even tell you why:

1.   I don’t own an ereader so I read everything on my laptop or desktop.  I just like reading PDFs vs. other formats on this screen (I have Kindle for PC, Sony Reader for PC, and Calibre).

2.   I’ve been in a University setting forever.  We can’t install software on any of our computers due to restrictions from admin.  We have to use the University approved/pre-installed software.  None of that software supports epub, mobi, etc.  All we get is adobe acrobat (and that’s a luxury).  When I want to read a story at work or between classes it has to be in html or PDF format.

3.   Sharing data (computer-to-computer) is sometimes difficult in a world of 20 different versions of the same software.  When sharing data with other schools/agencies, the PDF format has been the easiest to use.  The only time it doesn’t work is when someone doesn’t have a PDF reader (this has only happened to me once).  The same applies to stories. I know a few of my friends read on their laptops, so PDFs are just fine for them.

4.   I come from a place where people are still using the old school overhead projectors (you know with the light bulb that always seems to burn out in the middle of the presentation).  Some of our professors don’t make any of their materials available online or in electronic format.  Students are required to pay an additional $100-$200 just to copy assigned readings for a course.  You should see us when someone takes the time to scan something and create a free PDF - it's like Christmas!

5.   They’re just sexy – don’t hate ;D

Was this story complete?  I have 11 chapters.  I can't figure out how many chapters I'm looking for if it wasn't complete.  If it ended at 11, let me know and I'll post what I have.

Back from a long needed vacation and don't wanna start my workload of 430am wakenings and 10-14 hr days.  Vacation was full of activities, so no down time for me. It was great to have everyone together, which is a task these days with a hubs that travels, a son a senior in h.s. and the other a senior in college. I didn't get much reading done, and I have a lot to catch up here.

I did good to get unpacked and washed 6 loads of clothes today !

Off for a soothing bath and a little reading on my updates. Hope everyone had a great week.

Hi, i can only read pdf and epub in my iPad using the ibooks app. This is my main app for reading. i also have the 4shared app where i open the .mobi and .lit books i downloaded. I do prefer the pdf format as it is allows me to email it to my sister. Ibooks don't allow you to email epub, you have to logon to your PC, copy the epub to your hard disc, then attach to an email using your PC.

I have no experience with kindle but i do have some experience with my sister's jailbroken nook color and my daughter's acer iconia (school requirement). My daughter prefers using her ipad than her acer which is powered by android. Sorry, but am not happy with the android. It is so much easier to navigate the ipad than the nook. Downloading in the nook is time consuming and i feel there are too many steps to download, look for where the file was saved, open the ereader app etc. Maybe i am so used to my ipad i tend to just recommend everyone to buy this instead.

I guess my main selling point to you to get the ipad is how easy it is to download from Ffn, PTs and use flagfic. if the post in PTS is a pdf or epub, once you click on it, it opens a separate tab where it downloads the file. once downloaded, you will see a button on the top right to "open in ibooks", click it and it will automatically open ibooks and the file is saved. Even for FFn, just copy the URL onto flagfic, choose the format you want and click download. no need to email it to yourself. It will just download and you again open it in ibooks to save. In the nook, the 3 steps to upload and read into an ipad, takes at least 5 steps.

Plus, with an ipad you get to play lots of games, have a bigger screen for watching youtube and other videos, take pictures, play music and access to your email. Its also very handy, for me, it is the perfect size and weight for a tablet.

i only have an ipad2 and my niece bought the ipad3. That retina display and clearer camera is worth it. the words in the books are indeed more clear in the ipad3 compared to mine. if a new ipad will be released in sept. then I would wait for that and see what improvement they made again on an already great tablet. Am saving up to buy an ipad4, whenever that will be released as apple is known for quickly improving its gadgets  :)

Naw your not alone all mine on my kindle fire are pdf's  don't know whats wrong with them :-*

I didn't used to mind PDF & I understand why you like it, but when I got my first Kindle, the print on the PDFs was so small I couldn't read it easily.  But if you only read on a computer, it is fine normally.  Sometimes, depending on how it was made, PDFs can't be adjusted for size, which is a problem if the print they were made in is small. Also, mobis and epubs are about half the size of a PDF - really nice when saving them on a memory card :)

As you see I do have experience - it's not that I'm trying to be negative. Another thing I love about epubs or mobi is they convert so well to things like PDF. However PDF does not convert well to other formats without using a full version of Adobe :(

But if it works for you.... ;D

Booked, I totally get your love of the Ipad, I just think they are overpriced for the amount of memory you get.  I had an iPhone for 4+ years before getting my android.  The Android market is at the point the iPad market was at 3 years ago - not as many apps available.  But, in the iPad app store? You can download a kindle app that works great. My husband loves it. He has an iPad.  My problem was at 16 gbs on my phone, after loading my 3 Twilight movie, a couple Doctor Who episodes and my favorite songs, it was pretty full and crashing a lot. :(

And? Although I like my Nook tablet - it is better than the color - I don't necessarily think it's the best answer. I don't have the issues your sister is having. It is really easy to download & open stories. Plus there is a "bookshelf" I can put the stuff I want to read or am currently reading on. No more lost stories!!! :djparty: :cheer: :cheer:

Thanks Ella! i will try to download the kindle app and see how it fares against the ibooks and nook apps i have. I don't really like reading in 4shared as there are ads at the bottom and it distracts me. My ipad isjust 16gb as well but ebooks are really relatively low in memory. I just have to live with syncing it with my PC at least once a month so I can save my downloads to my PC as backup. i think there is really a limit to what you can store in ibooks bec the recent ones i've downloaded don't open and appear in my bookshelf. however, when I sync it to my PC, I can see the books are there, it just didnt appear in my bookshelf. So i make it a point to delete from my ipad those i've read so i can have room for my new downloads, even though I still have about 4GB free memory. my books just eat up about 2GB memory (over 300 fanfics) so I have a lot of music, games apps and word/excel/pwrpt files (pages, numbers, keynote) i use for work in my ipad.

My sister's nook was jailbreaked (jailbroken?? hehehe) so it appears as an android tablet, not the usual nook color navigation. She bought it there in the US, jailbreaked by my cousin there before she brought it home in Manila. So am now the one "suffering" teaching my much older and tech challenged sister to navigate it or handle the downloading and uploading for her. I had to put alkido and ezpdf so she can read books in her nook (ironic isn't it, a nook that can't easily read books... dang jailbreak). I eventually was able to reboot it to look like the normal nook color. But she got used to alkidos look so she asked me to put it back the way it was... Am her book slave...

LOL!  I know about tech challenged family.  I had to set up the iPad for my husband. :)

My android tablet is not as easy to use, but it still is easy for me. I do like Alkido. Only like calibre, it creates folders for each story making it a pain to copy stories from. I end up backing up the whole thing to my computer.   :P
