The discussion about men's nobs brought this to mind:

The first testicular guard, the "Cup," was used in Hockey in 1874 and the first helmet was used in 1974. That means it only took 100 years for men to realize that their brain is also important.

Haha. Yup. Pretty much the same here, unless you head into Alice Springs. The flies are the worst part though, bloody blowies. They're like black swarms of disgusting. We wear those stupid cork hats for a reason people. Even down in Victoria they are horrendous, especially around the horses. When I've been out on some of the Outback cattle stations they are almost unbearable. Then add in riding in 48 degree heat all day, not having any toilets or running water unless you're at the homestead. It's not fun.
I live on the edge of the Mojave desert.  No sand. Just lots of dusty dirt. And tumbleweeds. In my backyard.  Frigging things have sharp thorny things.  Hot in the summer.  Freezing in winter.   Some days there's a 50 degree difference between day & night temperature (Fahrenheit)  Oh and wind.  Lots of wind. But you know it's still beautiful California!!!! :D
Fortunately, I'm on the civilized end of it ;)  though we do have our bogan equivalents :)

I thought that little tidbit was one of the funniest things I'd ever read.  I have to resist sending it to everyone I know.  As the mother of two sons I try very hard not to be sexist, but I do believe men can be led around on a very short leash (nudge, nudge, wink, wink).

You say Outback around here (Texas) and it means a restaurant where they serve steak and bloomin' onions!

And we have a "restaurant" here that serves steak and bloomin' onions called "Lone Star".

I smell a conspiracy!

Well - I just googled Lone Star and found out that they have gone into receivership. It seems no-one in Australia wanted to pay $30 for a steak when they could head down to the local pub and get a better steak for $15 - and served without the annoying line dancing routines that Lone Star used to force their service staff to do.

We do have Outback Jacks though. One actually opened just a few weeks ago where I live. Can't see it lasting long with these prices: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login although the menu made me chuckle - it's obviously aimed at the tourism market and has some of the Aussie things that we have mentioned here over the last few weeks - billy lids (for the kids menus), thongs...

As for the "Skippy Dundee" for $16.95 (A combo of two famous Aussies, kangaroo and crocodile on skewers. Served with Jacks bush chutney.), yeah, I don't think so! Australians rarely eat roo and croc!

I drive past at least one roo that's been hit by a car on my way to work every day and that is just not appetising!

We don't tip in Australia and eating out can be ridiculously expensive. Here in Central Queensland, pubs are the best places to eat and can be quite gourmet...and sometimes quite not!

When I was in America I was taken to 'Outback Steakhouse'. Yeah, no. If it was really Aussie there would be way more lamb on the menu. The waitress also looked at me funnily and explained that I would be getting steak that was 'raw' inside when I ordered it rare, yeah...I knew that, it's why I ordered it!  :D :D :D It was fun though. And the steak was pretty good.

I love our local pubs steak and chips. Mmmmm.

I have to disagree with you on the Roo thing. We eat Kangaroo a lot, it's sold in every supermarket down here, roo mince and steak is common in our house. I love a roo bolognese. Crocodile is a nasty meat though. I've tried that one before. Yuck.

It's just roadkill up here.  :sign0137: and while I don't necessarily agree, I know too many people who have to go roo shooting to keep the numbers down - these are farmers whose livelihoods depend on growing feed for their livestock.

Although it's high in protein, low in cholesterol, etc and it is readily available everywhere, I don't know a single person who buys it, unless it's to use as pet food. But I do live in the Beef capital of Australia so that might have something to do with it.  ;)

There is a restaurant in Brisbane that is amazing though: Tukka (aussie slang for food). You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

It's specialty is native ingredients:
In our Brisbane Restaurant, you will taste the best regional and Australian produce and you're supporting local farmers. We incorporate the freshest ingredients from our bountiful countryside, oceans, bays, even our own garden and combine them with native herbs, spices and berries to produce a true taste of Australia. If you want something really special, try our five or eight course degustation tasting menus with exquisitely matched wines.

If anyone ever gets the opportunity (yes, it IS an opportunity! The southerners like to look down their noses at us Queenslanders - jealous bastards!!!) to visit Brisbane, I highly recommend Tukka.

Discussed this with some friends over a cold chardonnay - an important topic while the menfolk cooked meat over the fire. This was the verdict:

ALL Aussie cricketers wear a "cup" when playing (at least that's the excuse for the constant "downstairs adjustments") but few ever wear a helmet.

What does THAT tell you about Aussie men?

This is Shane Warne - one of our greatest cricketers:

He destroyed his marriage due to an addiction to sexting.

What does THAT tell you about Aussie women?  :-[

But he's now engaged to Elizabeth Hurley who used to do Hugh Grant - so he must have something going for him in the "cup" area!!!

Of course he also said he wanted to play Jasper. :)

And speaking of Jasper. WTF?  I saw a pic of "Jasper" for BD2 and he has short brown hair??  Did Alice talk him into dying it and get a wolf to chew it off? Because that is just wrong, crappy wig or not.   >:(

I'm not sure WTF they have done with pretty much all of the character's hairstyles in all the films but Jasper has been the absolute worst.

That stylist should be fired for screwing that dude's hair up so bad  :021:

I just don't get it! Was it in Eclipse that Esme had really dark hair and now Jasper? Why would the producers/director/anybody-10783 decide to mess with the way these characters look? I can only assume they never read the part in the book where it says vampires are frozen from their point of changing.....
Watching those videos made me laugh so much..Rob is a bit of a geek/nerd isn't he? And Ellen is the only American interviewer that gets his sense of humour hence why he does so well on that showt. And because Aussie humour and Brit humour is basically the same that one was good too. One pet peeve though, Rob really must stop wearing his caps back to front..Back Street Boys are OVER. And he ain't a 18 anymore!

Esme didn't wear her wig for the fight scenes.  Otherwise her hair was right. I just think Elizabeth Reaser should color her hair.  She looks so old and tired with dark hair but young & beautiful with lighter hair.  But maybe she did it for another part.

Found a short little fic that I could get into (finally!).

Under The Waves by Miss Dare You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

Jasper is a haunted soul who hates his vampire instincts and gets off by inducing emotions in the humans that he hunts. One day he meets a young, desperate man and everything changes. Angst, slash. Rated M.

It's Vamp Jasper and Human Edward, well written (actually, I was really impressed with the writing since the author said that English isn't her first language).
You held out your hand, and I took it without stopping to make sense of what I was doing. For the first time in almost a century, I felt hope.

Jasper Whitlock, Eclipse

I think the issue is that they all wear wigs. The wig master (wig wrangler?) must not have read any of the books, as well as being blind. I don't think any of them look terribly realistic, except maybe Bella, but that's only because KS usually just has a rats' nest and it's nice to actually see her with styled hair.

I wonder if it's because Ellen's partner is an Aussie girl? Portia de Rossi who used to be good old Mandy Rogers.

Jimmy Kimmel usually handles Rob well. I missed the usual interview with the entire cast that he has done for the last couple of movies. We don't get Jimmy here in Australia so I saw them online. I love Jimmy Kimmel - especially the I'm F*@!ing Matt Damon/Ben Affleck bits. Google if you don't know it.

The MTV guy (Josh Horowitz) always does a good job with the cast. You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

I also thought Jimmy Fallon did an ok job this time. Usually him and Rob together are a bit too giggly. Maybe that manly testosterone filled water fight butched them both up a bit!

I meant off topic from what we are meant to be discussing on this thread!

And to keep the fun police (Demaris) happy...

I just finished An Education by BellaScotia - she has pulled all fics. It's posted here: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login but if you want it, get the one labelled "old" because the other one is not complete - she did a repost.

21yr old Bella has never been kissed. When her bff and room mate Jasper moves out, player Edward moves in. How far will he go when Bella asks him to teach her about dating and sex? Mostly fluffy and lemony, minimal angst. Rated M. AH OOC

I didn't think I would like this one but it wasn't too bad. There are no huge glaring SPAG issues (spelling, puncutation and grammar - primary aged children love this term - too bad I can't get them to actually check their own!) although there were a few Edward and I/Edward and me mix ups and one part when Bella was clam (calm). These might have been fixed in the repost - the one I read was an old cut and paste job - before flagfic!

Initially Bella was extremely incipent. As a child she lived with Renee in a commune/cult and the story alludes to an extremely sheltered but abusive upbringing. This could have been developed a lot more as the entire plot hinges on Bella being naive and timid and relying solely on Jasper, her neighbour when she escapes to Charlie's at 13.

The whole "education" aspect happens pretty quickly and it gets quite steamy too, but I did like how Bella's realtionship with Jasper actually became the focus. It is E/B and it's HEA - not too angsty, pleny of sex. An easy weekend read.

Holy crap.... 28 pages since I was last here! I'm just quickly stopping by to rec a fic :)

Summary:::
Edward Cullen posts you on the internet. Naked. Vulnerable. In his bed. And you have no idea.

One of the best fics I've read in a really long time. It's confusing, extremely erotic, hot and dark. It's a WIP and I'm not sure how often the author updates but it's 24 chapters in and was started at the end of October. Methinks she updates often

Happy BD 2 weekend everyone!  :-*
