:'( She is so brave and strong

My heart is so broken for Cara's little family. There is nothing that can be said or done to help ease the pain of loss, especially the loss of one so young, it's so hard to comprehend. The only thing that runs through my mind when I hear such tragic news is what my mother once told me after losing my brother. I asked her how she survived that loss, she said the only way she knew how she had to find away in her mind to justify why god took him back so she told herself that he was precious he had a gift so beautiful that god decided the world wasn't ready for it and took him home. My mom is a simple woman with a simple mind but I found this profound. I'll keep Cara and her family in my thoughts and prayers, I'll light a candle for Kenzie. Praying that they find the strength to carry on in anyway they can.  :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

Between the awful news about Cara and now the elementary school shooting, it's been a sobering day. There's definitely comfort to be taken in the outpouring of love that's been shown towards Cara, reminds us all that our little fandom can be a powerful and positive place.

Just Wanted to pimp this story out because it is sorely under-reviewed.  Very different take on Edward/Bella and life in the Spanish-ruled Philippines during the late 1800's.    Love to see a different take on the Twilight characters and some new authors that show promise.   Not sure what her update schedule is but love this story so far...

Touch Me Not by RRose

When English doctor Edward Cullen arrives in the Philippines during the Spanish era, he didn't expect to see how Filipinos were mistreated in their own country.  He also didn't expect to meet his love in the form of servant girl Isabella.  Based off of Rizal's Noli Me Tangere.

I know most of us could use a distraction right about now.   Been crying all morning over this Connecticut incident and the news from our poor Cara.   If anyone has anything else that they would rec that takes you away from reality, would love to here what it is!       :(
Thanks to all those who have shared stories with me, and "you're welcome" to those who have enjoyed mine!

This has been a crazy couple the days... :( I've no words..20 children dead in their school, a young 24 year old man kills his mother and his father  :( 100 rounds fired! I want to say something about gun control but as a Brit I know we have a totally different take/view on gun laws. President Obama did a fantastic job in his statement though, he projected the sorrow we all feel, perfectly. Countless people in Connecticut will have nothing whatsoever to look forward this Christmas season...as for poor Cara well, my heart is heavy.

But, I do have a rec, I read this a while ago but came across it when I was sorting out my Calibre earlier this week
Stolen Secrets and Shattered DreamsYou are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
A NYC barman views his mind reading as an isolating cancer, until he meets a lonely 28yr old trying to escape her sad reality. His life is full of harsh lessons. Hers an uphill battle, so she never complains when a beautiful boy pushes her away time and time again EXB AH.
I loved it. It is well written, slightly sinister, "AH but Edward can read minds? Mmm?" you might think; don't, the story unfolds in a very believable way. This Bella doesn't totally suck (for a change) and Alice isn't a raving loon, well, not in the normal sense. Great Jasper too. All in all a great story.

Um I read this, and though I wouldn't say it was my favorite, I don't remember any paying for sex.  Though there were some really funny parts.  And I loved their "names" ;)

The amount of times that Bella has gotten together with Edward in some kind of sex exchanged for something or other, all of which can be seen as some sort of prostitution, is uncountable. Au contraire, I kind of liked the way Edward treated Bella, if I read one more story where he looks and her and blue birds start singing I'll slit my wrists with a butter knife..sometime I need a break from that. But to each is own, by the looks of it I liked it for all the reason you ladies didn't  :D

Yep! But I'll allow it today.

I need a distraction - I should have spent my last day at work before holidays celebrating - instead I got abused by a parent for wanting to send his daughter to a leadership conference next year (an hour of personal insults and blame for everything that's gone wrong in the world for the last 8 years - even though I have only been at the school for 5 1/2 years) and then I was in tears for the rest of the day. He got under my skin so much that I didn't even go to our staff Christmas dinner!

And now, my first day of holidays and I'm reading about Carano, and then watching the news and bawling like a baby again.

I'll get dehydrated soon if I don't get my shit together! Perhaps I'm PMSing.

Anyway, feel free to stir the pot - especially over something like this. And BTW, I can tolerate fics where there is sex exchanged for payment (is that a sexchange???) but I agree - the love at first sight, bluebirds and butterflies just gives me the irrits!

Sorry to hear about your day Hon. It sucks, you've been so looking forward to today...and staff Christmas dinner is the highlight of the year! Or is that just the Christmas party? You should have pointed that father to the news and asked him if he really thought he had problems?

I don't think it's the Bella/Edward sexchange that bothers me, it was the Bella/Mike sexchange.... I wanted to kick him in the balls. He was just so sleazy.  Edward gets away with it because he's Edward and no matter how bad he is, we love him.  ;D

Well, except maybe Chippy because she loves Jasper  :D :D

But Mike? Well, James is better than Mike.  Just saying.  ;)

Sorry you had such a rotten day.  That is way too long to grump at someone for something you, as a parent, should be doing.  I'm assuming she didn't get in because her grades or something weren't good enough.  And that bird.... yeah, didn't want to see it again LOL!

It may be the bluebird of happiness, but it is a bird, and there will be crap somewhere.  Is saying crap allowed?

I'm so sad to hear about the school shooting. That is so awful... I feel so bad for the families of those kids.  I don't normally watch the news much, so this was the first I heard of it.  Sigh... and right before the holidays.  But then, they say this is the time of year more suicides happen.  It's a very stressful time for most either because you have family or because you don't.

And though I can mostly go either way on gun laws, there is never a need for an automatic weapon.  I think they are illegal in most states.  They are useless for hunting or self defense, the two reasons to have a gun as far as I'm concerned. Okay, I will jump off my soapbox.

I have been giving this a lot of thought since I woke up and saw the news. I'm concerned about how my kids are handling this news, and how it will colour how they feel about school. Fortunately (that is not the right word, but I hope you get what I mean), we have 6 weeks holiday now and the children would have forgotten about this by the time we go back in late January.

I wish I had a clear answer for you but it’s not that simple. Every child is different and how they process this news and grieve will be different.

I remember how children reacted after Sept 11. The constant coverage had a profound impact on some children. Some needed to sit and watch it over and over again, others needed to turn it off. Some thought it was just another movie. For a lot, they eventually became desensitized, and even became angry and frustrated – not about what had happened, but that it was all they saw when they turned the TV on – and in Australia, we don’t have 24 hour news channels. In fact in 2001, we still only had 4 free-to-air tv channels.

If I had a child that I was sending back to school on Monday, or if we were going back to school on Monday,
I would definitely be talking about this with the kids. Many children would be very scared about going back to school. As teachers and parents, we work really hard to make school a safe and happy place for children. For many children, school is a safe haven. Children will question how something like this can happen in a school and will worry that this could happen in their school.

I guess it also opens up opportunities to have conversations about how important it is to listen to the teacher and follow their directions – I just saw that one teacher shepherded the children into the toilets and had the children stand up on the toilets so that they could all fit in and the door could be closed. The teacher was smart and brave – and so were the kids because they did as they were told.

This tragic incident will make some children think about their own mortality and they will have questions about death and grief. In my experience, death and sex are the two conversations that parents fear the most. My advice is to listen to your children, acknowledge their questions and worries and let them know that they are loved. Kids are smart – they can tell when we try to sweep things under the rug – and this can cause them to worry more or build their own conclusions about things. Think about the funny and strange misconceptions we might have had about sex when we were younger because we could tell it was something that Mum and Dad weren’t comfortable talking about.

My four year old niece got a lot of comfort out of my grandmother’s funeral two weeks ago. Her maternal great-grandmothers had passed away earlier in the year and she was very anxious about death, and fretted anytime anyone mentioned ageing or getting old because her mum’s mother had told her “They were old so they died.” This innocent statement stuck with her and really upset her. At Grandma’s funeral, she waved the hearse away. My brother and sister-in-law told her that Great-Grandma was going to heaven to see Great-Grandpa so that they could be together again for ever and wait for when the other people they loved went to heaven. As a four year old fairy-tale and princess fan, she loved the “happily-ever-after” element and this seems to have resolved her worries about dying.

When the children do go back to school on Monday, they will also have to deal with the children whose parents haven’t guided them through this. There will be scared kids, and unfortunately kids at school can develop a pack mentality where grief grows grief. Teachers will also be scared and kids will pick up on this.

So, in a nutshell, talk about it, don’t dwell too much, but be reassuring and let your children lead the conversations. And hug your kids and tell them how much you love them!
