Sorry you had such a rotten day.  That is way too long to grump at someone for something you, as a parent, should be doing.  I'm assuming she didn't get in because her grades or something weren't good enough.

This is the thing - she was selected to go to the conference - it's a privilege! It's all about building leadership skills and confidence! She just didn't want to go because there would only be four other kids from our school going. I get that she's nervous but to miss an opportunity like this... :pulling

And though I can mostly go either way on gun laws, there is never a need for an automatic weapon.  I think they are illegal in most states.  They are useless for hunting or self defense, the two reasons to have a gun as far as I'm concerned. Okay, I will jump off my soapbox.

Australia's gun laws are very strict - and we still have shootings. After the Port Arthur massacre in 1996, the laws were tightened and we haven't had another massacre (yet). I know that "Guns don't kill people, people kill people" and more people die from cigarettes than guns, etc but I agree 150% about automatic weapons. Rural people need guns. I don't - and neither does my next door neighbour.

Sometimes though, I wouldn't mind a taser - that would have come in handy yesterday!  >:D

I'm ending my whinging and sooking and climbing off my soapbox now too. Let's all think happy thoughts...

Thanks for your advice.  I know I protect my kids from the constant replay of horrific news items, but not everyone does.  That means there will be kids who come back to school on Monday with their minds filled with the news of the shooting.  So I will need to talk with my son so he's not taken by surprise when some of his classmates say something.  Thanks again.

Sounds like everyone's having a tough day! Hopefully the weekend brings some better times, ladies.

The new chapter of Caged? If anyone's feeling emotionally fraught, probably best you don't read it right now. I was ugly crying all over the place. We sort of knew what'd happened before, but the reality of it was a million times more horrific than I thought. Savage knows how to bring the angst!

Also, thanks to whoever rec'd BRONZE by mothlights (You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login) I rarely read vamp fics, but this was probably one of the best I've read. It's nice to see a different storyline than the usual Vampward falls for human Bella.

Ah, so really, it is his fault as a parent more than your fault as an educator.  Confidence starts at home.  If he yells at home like that, no wonder she isn't confident.

Actually, I wasn't so much worried about offending people as being censored by the site. I'm never sure what will go through and what will get hit with the big NOT ALLOWED   :D :D :D :D :D

I used to be a bartender at a neighborhood bar - it's really hard to offend me.  I also don't take too much seriously.  Otherwise, I'd probably have to kill myself.  Stupid PMS hormones made me almost manic-depressive for years.  LOL!  Only now they are more menopause hormoans - yes I spelled that right.  >:( >:( >:( :o 8) ??? :P :-X :-\ ;D

AAAANnnnnddddd thanks for the RPattz decoration.  Nice way to end the week.  :57:

Just last week, I had a whinge here about how my spelling has gone to pot because of my reliance on red squiggly lines.

Today - there are red squiggly lines here! And I swear I say a mistype autocorrect itself before!

Is this new or have I just had my head up my arse for the last few weeks? Or is it because I upgraded to IE10?

I'll never have to worry about spelling again! ;)

I wish I could say at least we have a HEA.. but it's Savage, so who knows!

Is Dusty as angsty as it's been made out to be? I remember reading High Fidelity and having to stop at points because it was so heavy so I don't think I'll fare too well with anything worse  :o

Dusty is brutal. No lie. It's very very angsty. If Caged or HF bother you Dusty is the kingpin of fic angst. It's a great story though.

So, my husband and I were going to talk to the kids when he got home from work about what happened today - we've already had 3 emails and a mass voice mail distribution from both our Superintendent, our principal, and the district office about the shootings and ways we can broach the subject with our kids in a healthy manner.   I had it all planned out and was feeling good about keeping the TV off and doing some holiday baking to distract them.   My 9 year old daughter walks in after school and as I'm grabbing her and kissing her hard, she tells me that our neighbor (who we carpool with and drove the kids home today) told them all about it on the way home from school!   Down to how many kids they thought were dead!   I was livid!  And now I'm so angry because she just blurted out all the details and facts without even thinking that we would want to talk to our own kids about it!   UGH, I don't know what to do because she's my friend and neighbor, but now my kids are scared and worried it could happen at their school!      :-\ :'(

This is exactly what I meant about children who don't have parents who guide them through this! It is so frustrating when adults don't think about how children see and hear things.

Here are two extreme examples of how our words and actions impact on children:

I taught a little girl a few years back. All of a sudden she stopped eating. She just refused to eat. She was extremely anxious and went from a bubbly 8 year old to a timid shell almost overnight. After weeks of this, doctors' visits, all sorts of things, Mum and I sat down and had a chat with her. We were thinking the worst and were so relieved when she explained what had happened - she had heard Mum tell me that she had a tummy bug. She thought this meant that she had insects growing in her stomach.

When I received my first appointment as a principal in a little country school, we had a terrible night when the rescue helicopter crashed, killing the pilot, 2 paramedics, a 5 year old (from another school about 100km away) and his mother. Because of severe fog, no-one was certain where the crash site was. People were needed to assist with the search so parents woke their children and took them in their cars. Several of the children were with their parents when the wreck was discovered. As you can imagine, it was a terrible thing to see and the next day, the children told stories of severed limbs and heads strewn across the paddock. I was furious with those parents - why both Dad and Mum had to search, with the children in the car and to expose the children to something so horrific still disgusts me to this day.

This parent that told your children probably meant no harm - they were probably dealing with their own fears and just didn't think. Often people are surprised by how insular we can be at school as well - while they might be listening to the radio in their car or in the office, I have no idea what goes on in the outside world during my work day.

I believe that there are some things that children need to be made aware of - we can't wrap them up in bubble wrap no matter how much we want to protect them - but there is a time and a place and a way to do it so that their worlds are not completely shattered.

These articles have some sound advice for parents:

As I said earlier, Monday will be a very difficult day for lots of children, parents and teachers, but no matter how hard it is, please do send your kids to school. This will help them get back into their routine faster and will help them see that their school is safe. Being in Australia, I don't know how US schools operate, but I would hope that counsellors would be available and that teachers would be given support in how to guide children through this so that they can heal. Normalcy is so important for children.

For many children, this won't go away overnight. It might take weeks or months for them to fully process what has happened. Some may even appear fine over the next few days and then some small insignificant event might cause them to fall apart.

How do we promise kids that something like this won't happen in their schools? I wish I had that answer because it is my biggest fear as a teacher and a principal. I hope something like this doesn't happen again.

I'm trying to read Hide and Drink by Savage for some time now. I really liked the plot and story, but I find something (maybe it's the style of writing or the way of naration...) really tiring, so I only read 3 or 4 chapters its time and then flounce it for a while.

That's horrible that someone else would tell ypur kids aout these events.  Obviously, she didn't do it to hurt you or your kids but you should say something to her.  They are your kids and you need to make sure the details are filtered the way you want them to be.

That said, unfortunately (or unfortunately, depending upon how you look at it) here in Arizona we have drills for these exact scenarios.  Our kids are taught to hide in a specific area in their classroom that can't be seen from their door, while their teacher locks the door and turns off the lights. My eight year old and six year old come home from school talking about hiding from "bad guys" on the days they have these drills.  If nothing else, these drills will help me talk to my kids about what happened in CT and relate it to why they need to listen to their teachers so that they are prepared for any event.

Unfortunately, these "bad guys" are everywhere. . .

I was scrolling through the pictures thinking "what does Lauren mean?" looking for a stylist with a scowling expression or something and then it hit me and I burst out laughing! Jesus she really looks like a hot mess. And how the hell does she look as old a Kirsten Dunst? Dunst must have what? 10 years give and take on her?
