Thread #5 - We are crazy talkers here! Join in the fun!

ADULT DISCUSSION HERE, SO TRY TO KEEP IT CLEAN! UM NO, WAIT! IF YOU ARE EASILY OFFENDED, LOOK AWAY NOW!

This is the new thread as the other was sooo long and had lots of pages. Continuation of our wonderful discussions on Twilight Fanfiction, Books, and Life in general.  But mostly Twilight fanfics... and life stuff that will get me a NOT ALLOWED statement.

Okay, here is a place to discuss what you are reading, ask for recommendations and complain about the writing.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, so please play nice

Because we know drypen's watching

Does anyone here have a last gen Kindle Fire? Is this a good deal, for a gift for a 10 year old?

crap for some reason it went to the front page of the ad, but it's the Kindle Fire 7, listed at $79. Or might the Acer Iconia, for 99, be the better deal? I worry about the Fire being to restrictive, since you can't get the google store on it.

Am not familiar with a kindle so i can't comment on it. However, my daughter's school required them to buy the acer iconia for their first year in HS. They were the first batch to use it as all their school books were now ebooks. She can't help compare it to her ipad so the iconia to her is a disappointment and uses it solely for school. The fact that their school required the incoming freshmen this year to get the samsung galaxy tab says a lot on the performance of iconia.

Maybe if the 10 yr old hasnt tried other tablets, then the iconia would be ok as it does do a lot of things like the ipad, except it's slower. We have always been happy with our ipads so if that is even a choice, i will always get an ipad...my husband, who's not techy and anti ipad before absolutely loves his ipad mini now...very user friendly considering how techtard my hubby is...

We are an anti-apple products family, so my husband bought me an Acer tablet 2.5 years ago when I was pregnant.  I already had an android phone so I was used to the operating system and everything, and at the time it didn't seem slow, but now it does seem a little slow to me.  It is great for entertaining my 2 year old with.  I have never really used an ipad or other tablet, so I can't compare, but the one I have is a good basic tablet (or was 2 years ago)

Damn thing was sold out! I tried!

Isn't that always the way?  I went shopping with a friend the other day. We spent £32 on taxi fares but when I got home I had forgotten the 2 things I went out for in the first place, my nieces Christmas present which had been on sale!!!

  • Hi! I'm Ellachanted and I'm a fanfic-oholic.
For all those of you who like to cut and paste stories, I found out by accident that you can copy on the mobile site of ffnet. I was able to copy a whole chapter on my phone. Granted, I have a fancy phone. But it should work on an ipad or tablet too   And maybe on the computer. ;)

Believe me, my hubby was anti-apple products as well. But when he caved in early this year and bought his ipad mini he now regrets not having bought an ipad the same time i did a few years ago. Now he is the one convincing me to get an iphone. Since i use my phone purely for talking and texting, i see no need in upgrading my samsung gt young which came free with my phone plan. I make sure my bag is big enough to fit my ipad as it is ALWAYS with me   ;D  those 2 gadgets are enough for me and unless they get broken, am not about to replace them...very tempting if it is on sale, but money don't grow on trees here so i try to avoid sales as i end up buying something i don't need  :P

I love my Nexus tablet (it's android), and I got my first ever apple product this summer, an ipod touch. I really like it, but I haven't used it for anything  but music. It's a bit small for my taste for reading. For the price, I'll probably stick with android based tablets, but apple is really just about the only really GOOD mp3 players left, unless you want budget no frills. I miss my Zune.

LOL!  I am a Mac and hubby is a PC!  I swear by my Mac Book, iPad and iPhone while he won't move away from his Windows and Android products!  I don't feel bad for having either of them because I use them all in different ways so I feel like I can justify the costs.  Hubby even said today we should drive to Portland and get me a new Mac Book!  Crazy man!   :cupid:

You guys all liked Awkwardly Yours, right?   I'm about 30% in and I'm not loving it.   There is too much talk of skid marks and other disgusting teenage boy stuff. LOL  He just got together with Bella...  does it get better?

I mostly use my phone (at this time, a Galaxy Note 3) to listen to music.  Except when traveling on planes. Though now that I carry spare batteries? not so much of an issue.  I have a really basic Philips mp3 player for plane trips.

Though originally? The plan was to use my old iPhone 3G as an iPod touch.....  I'm not really sure where it is now, but I found my original iPhone and stuck it on the charger.  Guess I'll see how it works.

Yeah, I took a break from it.  I probably should have read it as a WIP, but I kept missing the updates.  There are really funny parts, but a lot of disgusting boy stuff that I remember since I have brothers.....

I'm a PC.  I'm not anti-Apple so much as I find them to be overpriced pieces of junk.  Okay, at half the price, they would be great products.  But I regularly crashed my iBook - it would freeze.  The only way to fix it was to hold the off switch.  No ctr-alt-del restart.  I bought it for music production, only to find that it didn't work because I hadn't spent enough money.  Sorry $2500 was not in my budget.  My iPhone? Yeah, crashed that too! And what's with the no right click.  I love my right click.  I feel lost without it!   :D :D

Um, I guess I should say I crash my Windows computers too, I just know how to fix them.   ;D

But if they work for you, that's great.  :-*

I really think Fanficgirl's favorites don't like me.....  I did about a third this time and it still is taking forever....

I started to download ficfangirl faves on Nov. 28 at around 2.00 pm and put my laptop to sleep at around 1.00 am. wake up the laptop at around 10.00 am Nov 29, when i came back at 11.30 pm it was done. it took around 24-30 hours.  Download 600+ stories as i already had the other 300+ stories.

Thanks Ficfangirl.

Please help me with my Calibre FFDL problem!!!

This afternoon I was still happily downloading stories from FF.net.  Then suddenly, my Calibre started displaying error message whenever I tried to download. Here are the error messages:

1.  When try to download a story, I've got this error: "ERROR Unhandled Exception - URLerror"

2.  To check out FFDL problem, I went to Preferences > Gets Plugins to enhance calibre, but I got this error message: "Unable to reach the plugin index page"

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this issue?  I'm really desperate.  I've tried everthing: re-started my computer many times and even un-installed and re-installed Calibre at one time.  Right now, I'm really stuck!   :(  Please help!!!

I have had that error message before.  I find if I close Calibre down and then re-open it, that clears the problem.  Good luck.

I grew up with a brother but I think I must have been oblivious because I didn't know any of that was going on. LOL   I ended up finishing the fic last night and it was funny as a teenage boy POV with a first girlfriend.   I did like how it fastforwarded at the very end and we got to see a little more of what had happened.

Did you check for a plugin update?  I usually get that when I need to update the plugin. Let me get on my computer& check. It was working last night but things change quickly. ;)

Yeah, it wasn't all that necessary for me - it fixed a problem on a site I don't use.  ;)

I just ran it on my computer & no problems.  You always have to restart Calibre after updating things.  It says click to restart? But that rarely works for me.  I normally have to manually shut it down and start it back up.   :P

  • Hi! I'm Ellachanted and I'm a fanfic-oholic.
I should probably mention I don't update Calibre on a regular basis.  Most of the fixes don't apply to me, as I'm not using it to download books from various paid sites.  So I'm currently running version 1.10 in 64 bit.  I also have the 32 bit version, but I only use it as a back up, so it probably really needs updating.  :-\

For what it's worth, I'm using Calibre 1.7 32 bit with FFDL and I can still pull stories from FFnet without issues.
One of the rare few....

I have to do the same after an update  but I sometimes have to do so when it sort of gets stuck or I get an error message.
