Have you guys read Fantastical by Kristen Ashley?   I am swooning big time for this book (half way through now)!  The first book (Wildest Dreams) in the series was really good, but I'm liking this one even better.     They are all standalones, but loosely related.   Book 2, Golden Dynasty was good, but it wasn't as "pretty" as these other two.

I just recently finished re-reading the series because a new book was added.  My problem is once I start reading Kristen Ashley, I can't stop.

High schooler I could deal with - some seem like elementary school students.

I recently started a story and was ready to give up in the first chapter but was willing to try and see if it got better, until the AN at the beginning of chapter 2 said the author was in middle school.

I find the younger writers (including high school) can do humor and crackfic well. Especially short stories. But drama and angst are harder because they rarely have a lot of experience with it at that age. Though maybe experience isn't the right word. More the maturity to know how to deal with the emotions to properly resolve the story. I find when they do finish a story the ending rarely makes sense to me.   :-\

I totally agree, I have read several stories by high schoolers that were very good, as long as they stick to what they know.

I'm often very disturbed by highschool fics. Everything they describe, I ask myself - where are the adults? Or: This is a police matter!

Bella getting bullied and beaten into a coma and nobody cares, no police, even if Charlie is the chief, no teacher...WTF?

And I ask myself often, how much is reality there? And if there is reality, do they get help?

I'm happy to say that the situations described in most fics have no bearing on my reality.  People aren't spoken to crassly and cruelly, beaten up, felt up, etc. in the world I live in. Although my daughter got involved with an emotionally manipulative (and IMO abusive) boy in high school, to my knowledge she did not experience anything like what is described in most high school fics. (And yes, we did everything in our power to protect her to the extent we were able [since she didn't want to be protected] and got her therapy for the depression his behavior caused.) My son is a freshman in HS this year at a different school.  I'll be keeping my eyes open.  Admittedly, I'm no longer part of the clubbing scene, but I've never seen people dance in clubs in the manner described in fics.

I did have a job a number of years ago where I heard rumors of wild sexual escapades between employers and employees, but I never witnessed anything untoward.  The stories were hysterical (and would have been considered sexual harassment if reported).   But they were only funny because it wasn't happening to me.

When I first started reading fics, the language and behavior of the characters frequently shocked me.  Now that I have numbed my brain to the frequent use of curse words (especially the f word), I just write everything off as pure fiction.  In other words, it's totally incomprehensible to me that real people could behave that way.  I can deal with it as long as it's make believe.

That doesn't mean there aren't some universal truths buried in some stories.  But this is pure entertainment for me and I'm not looking for enlightenment in fanfiction.

Thank you!

I know most of what you wrote, but high school and our school system are pretty different, so I never was sure how much it was exagerrated. And a highschool kid writing about highschool? And I think it shows their level of maturity, when they don't know when to involve the police or that the characters need intense therapy and not only quiet afternoons in a meadow...  ;)

Next time I know to ask here for a reality check! :-*

With respect to high school I can definitely say that people were beaten up, spoken to crassly and cruelly and there was drugs and most likely sex, too.  But most of it was done away from the sight of the teachers/administrators.  So there are certain things that can ring true to life for me.  That being said, given that it's fiction I expect a certain level of exaggeration and embellishment.

That is sad. It's been a long time since I was in HS, but I don't remember that happening. Okay, two girls got in a hair pulling fightthat was mostly funny. And there were always the nasty wannabes (not quite popular but thinking that putting down the not so popular kids would get them there)  I never got that since to me all the popular girls were actually really nice to everyone.

My niece had a few problems in school with nasty rumors because she brushed off some guys that were interested in her. But nothing ever physical. And well, drugs were around. ;)

There were some fights when I was in high school. The administrators  stopped the fights very quickly. I didn't see or hear of any bulling, though some must  have happened. My school had about 3,000 students. Most of the fights happened at the end of the school year.  Most of the time it happened during lunch, but one time there was a fight during my English class. We had a substitute that day and she had left the room for something. While she was gone , two girls got into a fight. I got so scared, that I left the classroom and stood in the hallway. I stayed in the hallway, until some teachers came to stop it. It didn't take very long before the teachers got there.

This is another story that I have been reading. I liked Bella in the beginning, but I didn't like her later. I really like Edward in it.

An Eternity To Love
By: Mizzdee
Best friends at 5, in love at 15, ready to marry at 17. Edward and Bella were destined for forever. In 1918, tragedy fell upon the couple, ripping them apart. A very different Edward and Bella meet again years later and this time…eternity can be theirs.

This was my experience as well. I know it's only gotten worse for students since social media has become more prevalent as a means to contact and keep in touch with people outside of school. One of my friends was recorded without her knowledge in the middle of an intimate act, which was spread around the school. The administrators couldn't do anything since it occurred outside of school. But I do think a lot is embellished to add more drama to a story, although I guess it really depends. I've read so many high school fics where students would just skip and take off for weeks without any action taking place. If I didn't show up in class, my lack of attendance was noted and handed in to the attendance office. If I were to miss a whole day, the school calls whichever number was listed for contact info. If I keep missing school, then a truancy officer would most likely get involved in the matter and it wouldn't be me getting in trouble, but my mother for allowing me to miss school. But again, it's just fiction.

Most of the Mobward fics are where I'm tickled silly over the ridiculous plotlines. I didn't finish reading but I vaguely recall Carlisle being a politician (doctor, thanks ella!)of some kind in Emancipation Proclamation, who also doubled as a mob boss that was allegedly really important. Yet he had all the time in the world to go hand select a teenage girl to be his live in slave. REALLY?!

LOL! In EP, Carlisle was a doctor and a mob boss if I remember correctly. His medical knowledge helped with the knowing how to torture someone. Made no sense whatsoever to me. :P

That's a little bit more plausible. I couldn't remember and I wasn't about to go back and check. I just remember thinking how outlandish it seemed that this guy who is such a hot shot with all this power would sully his own hands by going and getting Bella himself. That seems like something left to the henchmen. Tony Soprano would never!

In other news I finished my read through on all the pulled to publish fics that had interesting summaries. I only really liked a couple  :( Now I've been re-reading a lot of old book marks because I haven't found anything grabbing my attention and I'm back on the FF.net archive all the way back from early 2010. Maybe it's time to make a trip to the library  :D

 :iagree: :iagree:
The same goes for me though HS was over 25 yrs ago  :P Went to an all girls school but i didn't see bullying to that extent in fanfics. My daughter is a sophomore at the same school i went to and except for some girls bullying her in 6th grade, she hasnt had a bad experience. Maybe situations are diff now, the girls are more mature bec she is friends with some of those that bullied her before. She has learned to ignore the other bitches (oops, it appears i am the one who has not moved on  ;D).

I am just glad she hasnt been bullied since. My 10yr old son is studying in an all boys school and hasnt been bullied. Though he would tell me he has seen others being bullied and he says he tries to rescue a friend when that happens. I just hope he doesnt become a target but am super proud of him for his kindheartedness and courage.

Cursing here is not really common. We don't say f*ck or sh*t every other sentence. Well, sh*t may come out once in a while  ;D but as an expression of dismay at something. But that is such an "american slang". Here, the worst curse is "putang ina" or literally "whore mother" or the equivalent of "mother f*cker". That is more commonly uttered here, variations of it would be " 'tang ina" or trying to be discreet but you really want to curse so you say " 'tangna".

That said, i really consider the HS fanfics as very embellished fiction. Makes me wish i am right and that my kids would never be in those situations.

I just started reading The Stench Wars.  It's an Eclipse AU. I had it on my list forever, but it wasn't until someone was looking for something and a funny scene in this came up. I realized it wasn't what I thought. So far it's funny. I'm kind of into funny vampwards right now. ;D

I feel like I should make a little (big?) carve out to my earlier statement about people being cruel.  Obviously, those who hide behind anonymity on the internet are big exceptions in everyone's world.  We all know people who have been mistreated on the internet.  A perfect example is all the fanfic authors who have been abused in anonymous reviews.  Not to mention news stories detailing abuse of high school and college students via pictures that invade privacy released on the internet, text message rumors, social media bullying and cyber stalking.

Unfortunately, our technology exceeds our ability to police the bullies and psychos of the world and gives them weapons to inflict pain on the innocent.

I'm always happy that this group does its best to be friendly and accepting of others' opinions.  *steps off soapbox*
