Thread #5 - We are crazy talkers here! Join in the fun!

ADULT DISCUSSION HERE, SO TRY TO KEEP IT CLEAN! UM NO, WAIT! IF YOU ARE EASILY OFFENDED, LOOK AWAY NOW!

This is the new thread as the other was sooo long and had lots of pages. Continuation of our wonderful discussions on Twilight Fanfiction, Books, and Life in general.  But mostly Twilight fanfics... and life stuff that will get me a NOT ALLOWED statement.

Okay, here is a place to discuss what you are reading, ask for recommendations and complain about the writing.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, so please play nice

Because we know drypen's watching

 "Dear admins of fanfiction.net!

You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login is my first address to go for reading fanfiction. And I read a lot of fanfiction. To be honest, I only read fanfiction at the moment and a few original fiction stories strewn between.
But I don't have always access to the internet. So I used flagfic.com to save these great stories and read them on my e-reader. I loved this combination! Two of the greatest websites combined! Not only reading fanfiction, but also this way of having these stories with me and being able to continue reading at the bus or while waiting for a doctor's apponintment, made the whole experience so much more better.
And I loved the way flagfic.com could grab the story. Not only the naked text, but also the banners as book covers. Wow!

You allowed flagfic.com to grab stories from your website for 5 (!!!!) years! And now, all of a sudden, you don't allow this anymore? That's a little bit ridiculous imho.
I'm sure, this won't stop people who want to plagiarize or whatever you want to achieve with this.

So, please consider this one more time and don't scare away any more writers AND readers from your website. Please allow flagfic.com to grab stories furthermore.

Sincerely,

a daily reader on the brink of leaving."

I just sent this to ff.net. I don't have my hopes up high though. In the meantime I'll use a mixture of storymaster of fanfictiondownloader and the Calibre plug-in to grab stories. It works for me, but flagfic will always stay my number one.

Where's the sense in blocking flagfic.com when there are other story grabbers anyway? Will they block them too?  :o

God I hate having to vote You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login though I do think it an important element of the democratic society of Twificdom  (as you can see by my passport I'm a citizen) :D But I can barely remember what fic I read yesterday so categories like Favourite Undiscovered Gem are a pain to vote in. And there are a hella lot of fic I have yet to read!...Favourite Snuggle?! F*ck off!  :D  :D

I feel my anxiety increasing...haven't read most of the stuff nominated  :-\ ??? Some are on my ipad... Hmmm to download or not to download the rest... but using WHAT?!? Since those idiots at ffnet blocked Flag arrrrrrrgggggghhhh... Drafting a strongly worded email to those bozos now  >:(

I still haven't utilized calibre to downlad fics...am scared to start, feeding my addiction... :-\

Just wanted to make sure that everyone is aware that ff.net is no longer allowing FLAg to create ebooks from their site:

Please read this update from FLAG and please send an email to ff.net regarding this issue:

"As you may be aware, FLAG's grabber has recently been unable to connect to fanfiction.net / fictionpress.com. I have attempted to contact them repeatedly over the last couple of weeks, and after a significant number of FLAG's users also contacted them on my behalf, I have finally received a reply from them.
Regrettably, that reply doesn't address any of the issues, and simply requests that I disable FLAG's support for those sites. I have complied with this request for now, however I am attempting to negotiate some kind of compromise that will allow FLAG to continue working with both fanfiction.net and fictionpress.com. I requested written permission from them before launching the service back in 2008, so their request to disable support is a sudden and dramatic reversal of their previous position - in the past, they have always been happy to allow FLAG to operate.

I would very much appreciate it if you could please contact them via support@fanfiction.com or @FICTIONPRESS and request that they continue to allow FLAG to support ebook conversions of stories hosted on their sites. You were all wonderful in pressuring them to finally respond to my emails, and it is my hope that a big enough show of support will help convince them to reverse their recent decision."

Email sent but I doubt FF will take any notice.  I wish I liked FictionPad more, its bloody awful to read from or find your way around come to that.   :(
I sent them a bug report saying that though I wanted to support the site, it was totally unreadable on my phone where I read most fanfics.  They said thanks for the info. I got the impression from the reply they may not know how to make it work with their setup.  :P

Email received from ffnet support, 2013-10-22 04:34 UTC:
Steve,
Unfortunately we currently do not allow any exemptions in the site policy The policy applies to everyone even if there is some value added service provided by the automated bots.
If our policy changes or if a formal API is released, we will let you know.
Regards,
James
Please help us spread the word.
James

Change your damned policy, moron!! Sorry, had to vent here. Why can't ffnet just change the policy?!?  :pulling
Good thing i hadn't read that yet before i sent my email to ffnet...it would have just contained curse words and insults  >:(

Wouldn't be surprised if his full name was James Hunter  ;D

They've tried. Last month it was FFDL.  The guys who write that use a different type of grabber and base code. They said they could write around the blocks without a problem.  They just didn't want to. However, some of the more program experty users weren't so um noble & published fixes. FFDL is open source software. Meaning anyone can take it & change it.

I'm sure Storymaster will be next depending on how many use him. :(

Steve McQueen ( the director not the dead actor) is a genius! He managed to turn something which could have been just 'pornographic' into a really interesting look at a dysfunction which ten years ago wasn't even acknowledge as one. I would tut and roll my eyes at the term when I used to hear that someone, usually a celebrity who got caught with his hand in the cookie jar, was off to re-hab for sex addiction, but Shame put paid to that....There was nothing 'fun' about McQueen depiction of Brandon's addiction. It's a great film but you need to see it more than once to get pass the more 'unusual' elements and see the deeper story...well, that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!  :D
Couldn't (and didn't) explain it better myself and I'm loving your excuse.  :sign0098: :bravo_2: :D :D

I am currently reading a story that started that way, also with "English is not my first language" and while there were some words misused and what not, the story is really good, and I wish I didn't have things that had to be done so I could finish it.  Turns out I had already read her second story and liked it, just didn't connect the author's name in my head.

So I procrastinated my work, and finished the story - it was Dreamcatcher by ocdmess.  Someone asked for it on the 152 thread and I realized I had it on my reader (in epub if anyone wants it that way).  It is a supernatural, all human fic, and it was good, although I felt like she could have written more (I think she has pulled it to turn it into a trilogy), it had a good ending, I just didn't feel that the story was done.  Now I can't start another story until I get my work done tonight.

OK, I went to Cailbre to use since FanFic is being a complete butthead but I found out I can't use it with my IPad.  Any ideas on what I can do now?

Here are a couple.  They are slower than Steve's site, but will download or you can email.

You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login  this is the web app for the downloadable program.  I love this program

You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login  This one works for most sites but the last time I used it, I had to put in my account information to get it to work with places like Twilighted.  So Steve's is much better for anything other than ffnet.  This is the app site for the webapp version of the FFDL in Calibre

Try them both & see which works better for you.

There is also Storymaster - just google it.  If he is backed up, it can take days to get your stuff.  However, he will pull by author, by community, by favorites.  so there are some great things about using his site.

Have fun!  ;D

I think I read this a long time ago and enjoyed it.  But it did seem kind of unfinished. Or maybe I didn't get my acceptable HEA.  I don't remember.  I haven't felt the need to reread it, if that says anything.  :-\

I just tried them both (on a regular computer, not ipad) and the appspot one was not able to access fanfiction.net, but the webversion one worked, just a whole lot slower.
