Thread #5 - We are crazy talkers here! Join in the fun!

ADULT DISCUSSION HERE, SO TRY TO KEEP IT CLEAN! UM NO, WAIT! IF YOU ARE EASILY OFFENDED, LOOK AWAY NOW!

This is the new thread as the other was sooo long and had lots of pages. Continuation of our wonderful discussions on Twilight Fanfiction, Books, and Life in general.  But mostly Twilight fanfics... and life stuff that will get me a NOT ALLOWED statement.

Okay, here is a place to discuss what you are reading, ask for recommendations and complain about the writing.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, so please play nice

Because we know drypen's watching

I love that you post this too  :-* and yes, 152 may well have a larger audience but...EVERYTIME I go over there I leave with 20 more fics!!  :banghead: :-[ :violent-smiley-007:

EDIT: Just thinking....Caro why don't you start another thread for them? Or it might be best to post here and alert there.. Because it's true about getting 'in trouble', 152 are for fics that have already been pulled and cannot be found online anymore. It's not the right thread for posting still available fics...FFG might be on holiday but she'll be back *in an Arnie/terminator voice*  :D

She will and then I'm for it.   :chicken: I already have 2 threads running which I neglect somewhat, I don't fancy a third.   I think I will take your advice and post here and notify there.  Sighs.

Good lord, ff.net is really being a bunch of assholes! I'm all panicky right now....thinking about a permanent block on all downloaders....even though I have enough fics saved to last me a lifetime, I do NOT like the idea of being blocked from saving...

...free material.

I mean...really? Is this REALLY necessary? Is this REALLY going to prevent plagiarists from thieving fics?

The answer is no. If some lame ass really wants to steal a fic, they'll find a way.

I'm wondering if the scandal from that one chick who stole Dusty is the cause of all of this recent shit.

I apologize if my thoughts are a mess, it's been one of those days

On a different note: I'm reading a Bella/Jasper fic and while I'm enjoying it, the author won't spell out the curse words.

This is an M rated fic so I don't quite understand why I keep seeing

""F*-ing jerk," I muttered. I heard a burst of laughter from Peter, and a chuckle from Jasper.

"That's me," Jasper said. "When it comes to you, I am a f*-ing jerk, and always will be."

It's annoying as hell. I'm an adult. I'm allowed to read M rated fics. I wanna read the bad words.

I am agog, what fic are you reading?

It's not just the readers who are annoyed, I've had a ton of authors contact me with messages of support too, and some of them have also tweeted about it.

You wouldn't know it by reading ffnet's blog though; they've been deleting any pro-FLAG comments which are posted (but leaving anti-FLAG ones alone), and even going so far as to ban some of the users who have posted such comments, without warning or explanation.

Most authors generally seem to be very much in favour of services such as FLAG, but sadly there are a vocal minority who dislike it - it's possible that maybe they are the reason behind the recent problems with ffnet. I'm not sure what they hope to achieve though - blocking ebook converters and disabling copy / paste doesn't prevent plagiarism at all, it just makes everyone else's life more difficult.

If some lowlife wants to plagiarise a story, they will do so despite the any technical blocks. At the end of the day, if they can read it, they can copy it - the only solution to that is not to post the work online in the first place.

 :iagree: :iagree:

And I do NOT understand all of this sudden, bizarre and extreme....hate that both FF.net and some authors seems to have against FLAG.

And some of the comments that Demaris posted? That authors commented they were "fine" with readers copying/pasting their fics for easier reading but downloading is just way too far.

....really?

Because, they way I see it, if this is for plagiarism purposes, taking FLAG out of the equation makes it just a bit easier for people to steal if they are allowed to copy/paste.

Um, technically? M is almost a fade to black.  Most of the M rated stories are actually against the stated TOS.  That said, I find they tend to target stories with higher reviews and hits and leave the PWP stories alone because people rarely seem to review them. LOL! Too embarrassed maybe.  There are a number I've come across a few years ago that are still there. And they are pretty graphic. But not popular writers.

And I think their M rating is really a PG-13 rating.  Maybe R.  They definitely allow more violence than lemons though.  ;D

Well....that sucks lol.

When I read my first fade-to-black I was....displeased because of the crazy build up to it and then, just, nothing. I wasn't expecting that as the only other I had read before that was S. Meyers original books.

But now? I don't mind fade-to-blacks or lack of lemons. In fact I get tired of the over-use of lemons. And if they are going to have poorly written lemons, or ones that speak like a medical book then I prefer to have none at all.

That's not to say that I want to read written pron in a fic, either. There are ways to include a lemon that is classy and almost poetic (not sure if that's the right word? it's early lol)

Has anyone read Tangled Up In Blue (You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login) found it on my Journey UP; I'm pretty near the start and it's actually not very bad...I'm holding my breath as I've read 2 not bad fics in a row in the last few days (yep! that's what makes me happy right now 'not bad' fics)..The other was Forth Quarter (Footballward You are not allowed to view links. So I look up the show and select and episode to see what it's about.  It says "Watch Full Episode" I click.  I sit through a commercial and then I get a message on the screen "This episode is not available at this time"  >:( >:( >:( >:(
That's weird - I don't what site you use to watch TV online but I use You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login as I can also watch films on there as well.  :)

Did she have a release date posted? I am waiting......impatiently
No release date as of yet but Sylvia day is annoying the hell out of me by posting teasers on FB with no new info about the book. >:(

It's not necessarily written badly (not the best flow, either) but seeing bleeped out curse words in an M rated fic?

I'm curious to see how the lemons are handled....or if they are a fade to black. In which case, the rating would be mislabeled.

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.
That reminds me of a fic that I read ages ago that would use ** instead of curse words and I'm pretty sure the words I was using instead were a lot worse than the ones she would of written and that was a M rated fic as well. >:( :banghead: :banghead:
But every so often the would be a F bomb or C*ck written into the chapter so it made no sense and to be honest it wasn't that good a fic anyway. :D

Haven't read TUIB but read Fourth Quarter and it was ok for me too. Still think First and Ten by Nolebucgrl is the best footballward i've ever read  :)

I have read that and it was not bad I thought.

As for why some authors are hating on flag, I wonder if it has anything to do with some peeps sudden desire to published everything they have ever written?

So I downloaded the FFD from calibre, and fallowing Ella's instructions I need to do something to the plug in.... but I can't find the damn thing. :33:

I think I'm mentally challenged when it comes to Calibre.

Okay- I have a question, Epub is the only one that will work with downloading the metadata but whenever I download an Epub file I can't open it, the only way is to convert it to mobile.

So can somebody tell me why that is?
Did Anchalee answer your questions?  Let me know if you have any more problems and hopefully I can help.   ;D

I download in ePub only because that is the format that allows the download of all the metadata.  If you don't want the metadata because you have another method of tracking your stuff, Download into mobi.   But epub also works best for updating WIPs without over-writing all the prior chapters. And if you plug your kindle or other reader into your computer? You can easily send to the device.  Also, it will change it to mobi from epub prior to sending.  The only problem I've had is with PDF's - it will send the PDF version if a mobi isn't available.  :P

It seems to me that some authors aren't even aware of how Flag works! Parasite entity! Sneaking off with stories?! WTF!

Well phrased, bienfait!

I don’t mind if a reader copies and pastes my story from FFN for their personal use, but the idea of a third party site serving up my work makes me wary. I post on FFN, not Flagfic. The same goes for other third party sites I’ve seen mentioned on the blog. I’m all for FFN blocking them.

bienfait

10/23/2013 at 12:13 am

@Guest – my sentiments exactly. Once other sites start sneaking off with my stories, who knows where it will end?

By all means, let ffnet readers copy and paste for their convenience. But flagfic, and any other such parasitic entities, can kindly keep their hands off.

I went to the blog to read some of the comments myself, and thought about explaining how flag works, but I didn't think they would be open to reason, and I saw your post, and thought you did a good job.

Someone did suggest that there be an option for authors to allow flag, I wonder if this is something that Steve could work around, if they allow access back.

Someone else suggested a 2 week download like a library book (elibrary books require special software and you loose access after the loan period expires) and I don't like that option, because I have so many stories, I would never get through them all.

I still think FF is developing their own subscription based downloader, which I would really not like.  If that happens we would need to convince all the authors to jump ship.

You know what? It didn't even cross my mind to think about it as anything other than a fic about Bella and Edward who weren't Caucasian *shrug* made no different to me... but then in Dusty Bliss isn't a brunette and Edward has blue eyes, in Finding My Thunder there is ambiguity about Edwards ethnic make-up, I'm not bothered about stuff like that. In fact if anyone knows of a fic where they are both Black or Asian? Or better yet, an racially mixed couple! Sent it my way! It's Fanfic y'all, it's all about shaking it up!  ;) Though not...slash, nope, still can't do slash.....
