  • Hi! I'm Ellachanted and I'm a fanfic-oholic.
Thread #4 - We are crazy talkers here!

ADULT DISCUSSION HERE, SO TRY TO KEEP IT CLEAN! UM NO, WAIT! IF YOU ARE EASILY OFFENDED, LOOK AWAY NOW!

This is the new thread as the other was sooo long and had lots of pages. Continuation of our wonderful discussions on Twilight Fanfiction, Books, and Life in general.  But mostly Twilight fanfics... and life stuff that will get me a NOT ALLOWED statement.

Okay, here is a place to discuss what you are reading, ask for recommendations and complain about the writing.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, so please play nice

Because we know drypen's watching

I have FINALLY started reading Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire.  I can certainly see why everyone thinks this was once a fanfic.  It reads just like a fanfic, although I've read much better lemons in fanfic.  Of course, Beautiful Disaster may have been meant for a younger audience.  I'm having a little trouble believing that the college authorities would allow Travis to go around beating people up in the cafeteria without taking some disciplinary action against him, but that's probably just me being a difficult, rational adult.
I liked Beautiful Disaster back when I read it, but I hadn't read very much in that genre yet at the time.   Now I'm thinking I wouldn't have liked it as much. I bought the sequel, but haven't read it yet.    And yes, Travis was like a raging bull in that cafeteria!

I flounced that. It read like a bad fic.
Maybe if it was a fic I would be more lenient towards it.

It definitely reads like a fanfic, but I didn't flounce as I liked the story (and I like fanfics  ;) ). I broke my series rule with them and didn't jump into the sequel. I'd had enough of them two by the time I'd finished. I hope you enjoy it.

OMG!! It's Scarlet Raven! how are you?!!

Thanks again for all your lovely pioneering work that helped save those fics last year. Your google docs sure helped me find the fics i liked and so I didn't go crazy and try to save everything.  :)

I wonder, why doesn't ffnet change their rules so those entries you mentioned will now be allowed? One year since the last plague and they didn't think to make changes to prevent it from happening again?  >:(

Hello Darling! Good to see you also. *HUGS*

I think it's because they want to be a "family" website. I remember back in the Potter-verse days they used to allow "MA" stories. Then somewhere during that time they stopped it.  >:( They don't want to lose the money of their advertisers so they will never change it back. Everything always comes down to the bottom line. Money, Money, Money!

What I think is funny is they have never changed the scroll of ratings from FictionRatings.com in their rules and guidelines. They just have a disclaimer up that reads:
Please note FanFiction does not accept explicit content, Fiction Rating: MA, and the rating is only presented for reference.

I loved BD - but that is only because Travis is a great Bad Boy.
Abby just annoyed the hell out of me.
When I first read it, I thought it was a published fic as well - it certainly reads like one.

Ficfangirl, I agree. I forced myself to read this one and I had the same troubles. It reads like Twilight fanfiction. I also found some story flaws that I found kind of cliche and unbelievable. I don't know if the violence and codependency in this book make it an absolute train wreck or an interesting love story. Abby's character is just annoying and Travis is to extreme. I can see the similarities to Bella and Edward. That was the only way I got through it. Even the support characters reminded of Twilight.

I also don't like that the author of the story gets very defensive if anyone posts a negative critique about the story. She says that it's not a YA story and I will give her that, it's not. Scroll through Good reads and Amazon some time for the reviews. She or one of her BNF's have written comments that make you want to grab the popcorn an watch. Reminds me of LiveJournal days and FandomWank. LOL!

And Loopy your Kellan is very distracting in a very good way. OMG! Drool!

Are you downloading in pdf or epub format? I used to only do pdf (I dunno know why, before I knew better I guess lol) but now I will only download in epub....I just hate that I did so many in pdf :/
I have never done PDF except for others.  I have a Kindle reader and a nook tablet so I download either mobi or epub.  With calibre I always do epub because it only gives me all the great metadata if I use epub.  It's also really easy to convert to mobi when I want to read something on my kindle.  ;)

Thank You for the rec.  :-*

I read this and I have to say that i'm amazed of how people come up with this kind of plots. At first I almost flounced because I didn't know what I was reading and it's all confusing but in chapter 6 the author did a little summary in the A/N because she took too long to update I guess she wanted to refresh the readers minds so she did this summary.

And this is a huge spoiler....

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

And this summary helped me a lot because I didn't know what the hell I was reading, but this story is so good and I still have some question, but that might just be me.

I don't like the author either, she rages against people calling it YA with one breath, then spams all over the place, begging people to vote for it for Best YA read on the GR Choice Awards. WTF, lady?

Plus, the sequel isn't really a sequel, it's just the same story from Travis' POV, which only adds to the whole fanfic feel.

I'm sorry, the joke obviously went whoosh!!

It's actually Pendle Hill which was mentioned in the spoiler.

I promised to never use that word that is the hill you are near again - the wrath of Astro is not something I want to experience!   8)

Lol, the one time I don't read a spoiler and its involved in the name of something.  :-[ :-[
Don't worry I'll take the wrath of Astro as she should really learn not to post Rob/unicorn pics.  :P :D

Sooo....I'm doing the OCD thing and downloading copies of the completed E/B fics using Calibre and there's all these "stories" that are actually requests for people to help the poster remember the name of a story.  The posters are desperate and some have urgent needs.  All I've done is delete them from the stories I'm downloading.  Do these posts on a forum meant for stories actually generate responses - other than the expected response of "this is not the correct place to post this request" type response?

And no one better name a real story "Please help" or "Help me find _____."  No one will look at it thinking it's just a request for the name of a fic.

Yes! I actually look at them for story ideas sometimes.  ;D

I usually set it to over 1000 words.  Anything less is not usually worth reading.
