I have a serious question that I posted on twitter and no one could answer. I know how clever you all are here, and I know that someone will know the answer.

So, I've watched the DiorRob Director's Cut once or twice (I'm sorry - that's a lie!) and I'm wondering...

Did the line "I wanna be your backdoor man" have the same meaning in 1969 as it has in 2013?

Here's the line in question, at 1:17 (and also just because I needed to watch it again  ;))

And for the record, I'd let #DiorRob be my 1969 backdoor man and my 2013 backdoor man!

I think that in 1969 back door man is literally the man you let in through your back door. Your husbandmleft through the front door to go to work and you let your lover in through the back so hopefully they would never meet. So yeah, 2013 implies a whole other meaning to the word.

Btw thanks for the Fic.

Just wanted to pop on say a quick "Hi!" as I've not been able to get online for 11 days as I've been busy sorting things out as 10 days ago my eldest brother lost his fight to stomach cancer.  :'(
He had been doing so well and the doctors were hoping that this course of treatment, might well of been his last but unfortunately it wasn't so and he passed away 2 days before his 50th birthday.  :(
At least he got to meet his first Grandchild as she was born six weeks early, and though we all kind of knew that this was a matter of "when" and not "if", the last week or so has been hard.
I'll catch up on the 25+ pages later as it's 12.10am here in the UK and I know there's gonna be loads of Dior Rob etc for me to drool over, but I'm just too tired at the moment.
Take care and miss you all.  :-* :-*

I had to look up a song by Deep Purple - Knocking at Your Back Door but it was done in the 80's.  So things changed by then.  I saw an interview about how great they thought it was that they could write a song about nal that was playing on radios all over.

I just read a review for My Mr. manny By Jennifer Garcia. This was a fic right? I think I started one that sounds a lot like this. Anyone know the name of the fic, if this was one? Thanks  :-*

Don't rush to read this book. It was most definitely a fic. It had all the standard features of a very average fanfic - love at first sight, all the usual suspects, far too many details about what everyone is wearing and what they are eating. - there was even a line about Bella Mia being carried "bridal style"

I think where it really lost me was when the 6 year old child met her father in the park - and she didn't recognise him! And it was only a few months after her mother had caught him cheating and booted him out!

It was really fluffy, with a few very average lemons thrown in.

And to make it even worse - I actually paid money for this book! I'm going back to my pirating ways - lesson learnt!

I'm going to read some Rochelle Allison to cleanse my palate!

You can go go the Dior website to see the video and a rather interesting bio about Rob and how he is the Dior man.

Here's an excerpt: "He's in perpetual motion, running towards freedom, navigating the tightrope of an ever-changing life. The Dior man is fearless, embracing the unknown, playing with his own destiny. He has no regrets, his life is unapologetically his own, and he fits a thousand lives into his single one. Magnetic, sensual and provocative, the Dior man possesses the same traits as Robert Pattinson."

I don't actually mind angst, I just need humor mixed up with it.  Heck, my preferred reading is murder mysteries.  My issue with angst is that many writers just go on and on and on with it.  The good writers mix it up, just like life.  When it gets too angsty, I just want the character to kill themselves and get it over with LOL!

But really, all the good angsty stories, like Wide Awake and Hit by Destiny are way over 100K words.  So when you see an angst story with a T or K rating that is only 35K words, you know it was written by a teen and everything is better quickly.  Life just doesn't work that way.  Either that or they have no real dialogue.  That's all I'm saying. An M rated angst that is that short, may be okay only because they use sex to fix things. And everyone knows that sex fixes everything....  ??? :P :D :D :D :D :D

No really, if you are a good writer, you could write an angsty short story.   ;D

I'm still struggling with the term "angst". I'm never sure what it means.

Part of the problem is, "Angst" is a German word, but seems to have a different meaning than "angst".
I just used the google translator:

"Angst" means fear, anxiety

"angst" in English doesn't give me a translation to German...

so, now I'm confused...

and because 'm still hearing Kurt Cobain in my head whenever I read the word angst ("teenage angst has paid off well..."), I always connect angst with that awkward teenage mood... so angsty stories always make me think of teenagers and their inability to form a relationship without a lot of unnessecary, self inflicted drama before (does he like me? he cannot really like me, i'm not pretty enough... my friend should ask him if he likes me, or better she should ask his friend if he could ask him if he likes me...)

So, I think I'm not near the true meaning of "angst", please enlighten me and show me the difference of angst and drama...

Frankly, that is a perfect definition - unecessary drama.  I like drama.  Excessive unnecessary drama? Not so much.  Like that story some one talked about 20 pages or so ago.  Bella kept having bad things happen to her.  No one has bad thing after bad thing after bad thing happen.  So it's angsty.  And frankly, I get bored with it all. You are supposed to feel bad for the person, not bored.  This is why I don't "read" angst.

Really, in some ways, it is a mix of tragedy and drama.  Maybe someone has a better description.  Most of the time though, what is called angst, really is just good drama.  ;D

So all that relationship-py drama that could be prevented if one or both of them would have had the guts to just say something, be honest and speak about their feelings freely - that's angst...

right?

drama is (bad) things that happen from outside/other persons/hurricanes/car crashes/ earth quakes/zombies/Volturi...
angst is things that happen "because of the (unresolved) feelings" between the characters...

Did I get that right?

That sounds about right to me. And? I'm not a writer.  So I may not have it defined correctly.  But for me, drama tends to be good. There will always be some angst in a good drama because characters don't always react well to the things that happen.

Though, maybe some external things cause angst?   So the angst is the internal reaction to the drama.  And it usually makes the drama worse.  Now I'm confusing myself.  LOL!

I think someone else may have to put an opinion in on this. ;)  Because going through school, angst was not a type of writing, at least not one I remember.  :P

Well I'm off to bed!  Good night :)

What a great question! And one that many a native English speaker would be hard put to answer.

The English language is ridiculous! We have stolen and then bastardised so many words from other languages, and then used then incorrectly that even in English, their meaning changes.

To be perfectly honest, I had never heard of "angst" as a literary genre until I started reading fanfiction. I had always thought of angst as feeling anguish or being anxious. Then, it become something used to describe unnecessary dramas - as in teenage angst.

From Wikipedia:
In German, the technical terminology of psychology and philosophy distinguishes between Angst and Furcht in that Furcht is a negative anticipation regarding a concrete threat, while Angst is a non-directional and unmotivated emotion. In common language, however, Angst is the normal word for "fear", while Furcht is an elevated synonym.

There are some interesting definitions here: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

Urban Dictionary actually has a pretty decent explanation: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

Then there is the fanfiction definition: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

Angst refers to a genre of stories with prevalent physical or, mainly, emotional torment of characters. Most stories with an angst description contain significant levels of characters feeling emotions such as fear, anxiety, or sadness. Such fics may also be designed to elicit such emotions in the readers.

On fanfiction.net what does the category angst mean?
Angst can be described as worry or concern, or it can mean that someone is very upset, worried, a tragedy has occurred, there is a problem, or someone is undergoing painful circumstances or depression.

So basically, it's a little bit of everything that involves any sort of drama, real or perceived, and might make the reader form an emotional connection to the characters and the story.

There - clear as mud, right?  :banghead: Try teaching English vocabulary to children!!!  ::)

Thanks so much for your explanations, Ellachanted and Astro and thanks for asking, Anchalee! I'm also always struggling with the term "angst", since I'm also German and this brought some light into the darkness.  :sign0098:
