Thread #4 - We are crazy talkers here!

ADULT DISCUSSION HERE, SO TRY TO KEEP IT CLEAN! UM NO, WAIT! IF YOU ARE EASILY OFFENDED, LOOK AWAY NOW!

This is the new thread as the other was sooo long and had lots of pages. Continuation of our wonderful discussions on Twilight Fanfiction, Books, and Life in general.  But mostly Twilight fanfics... and life stuff that will get me a NOT ALLOWED statement.

Okay, here is a place to discuss what you are reading, ask for recommendations and complain about the writing.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, so please play nice

I just finished Touching Solitude by catharticone. It was really good. So long but not long enough. Could've read a sequel here. I really liked that the writer did her homework and everything fit with the time (it plays around 1912). So the characters really talked/acted/lived in that time. And since Edward practiced medicine, she really researched here.

Thanks for the rec on You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login, it was so good for the first half, and then for some reason I started losing interest. Too much fluff for me
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.
. I also wished for more at the end, but I see she is writing a pre-epilogue now, which I skimmed the first chapter. To me, it's just more of the same. I wanted more drama, but for those who like fluff, this historical fic has it. The writing is fairly authentic to the times and the author clearly did her research. What I initially really liked about this fic is that she it was B/E cannon except that they were dropped into the early 20th century, which made the UST much more believable.

Touching Solitude
Author: catharticone
Edward moves to a remote homestead in Oregon, seeking isolation to recover from a traumatic event. However, a chance meeting with his lovely yet melancholy neighbor sparks concern for her. Can these two broken individuals help each other to heal? AU.

Thanks again Ellachanted for your instructions of the ffdl plugin! I've figured it out now and developped a new system for me. I'm now using a combination of the ffdl and the count pages plugin and am now able to transfer the size of the fics to my reader so that I can easily see on my device how big the fic is without having to open it or firing up my PC and looking in Calibre. Woohoo! I like that! It's a little bit of work, but afterwards it'll be all neat and tidy!  :D

Copy is another cloud with an android app. You start out with a LOT of space( I have 27 GB, haven't paid a dime), so I like it. But I don't like the app, it's not as easy to use as dropbox or drive.

I have two calibre libraries. Real books automatically save to Dropbox, fics automatically save to Drive. I know I can probably copy the entire folder to another spot, then put it in the Copy folder, but that's time consuming, plus it won't automatically update when I add new fics, which means I have to remember to add them to that every time.

That's the issue I'm having with Skydrive....which sucks because I have like 25 gig on that cloud

And I'm now a member of copy, thanks for that one  :-* :-*

All my shit was working perfectly...then I got a new laptop a couple of weeks ago and now it's just a MESS. I'm trying to figure out the best way to back up to cloud and auto detect changes and update but I'm not having any luck. It doesn't help AT ALL that my ADD is completely out of control today and I can't focus on any project for longer than 5 mins so I've got all kinds of stuff started and nothing done.  :pulling :pulling :pulling

And my awesome sugarsync method i told you about is now no longer because I'm now over my limit for free storage and there's no way I can split my library up. It's just a mess.

I don't save to the "cloud" because my ebook folder is just too big.  Darn my hoarding tendencies.... :)

Although? If I split the WIP and Completed libraries? I might be able to do it....

Just finished Roar Like A Lion by Counselor; Jesus but that girl can write a hella of a historical fic. No idea how accurate they may be but you sure feel like you're in the time-frame she sets. And the language? Where does she get that? I mean *Shrug* how would she know how a bloody logger in the Depression would speak? This is another goodie....Thanks whoever it was that reminded me this was in my TBR....Not sure whether to continue with Counselor or move on to Confessions After Dark? Decision...decisions.... :-\

In that case your best bet is either the Northern Line and/or Victoria Line.   :D :D :D   Come to think of it the National Gallery is also a good place to be hit on and they tend to be less smelly.   ;)

That is hilarious, I am on the High Barnet branch, I normally get the tube at Highgate/Archway.   Have fun at the National.  The BM has the Pompey exhibition, that might be worth a visit as well.    :D :D :D

So you're discussing the best places to get felt up on the London Tube and I'm the one that gets called Pervy Knickers?

Is this where I need to give you all the lecture on cyber-safety?

Be careful, I'm not entirely certain that Demaris isn't a 65-year-old man - she might even be the smelly man rubbing up on you on the tube!

I love counselor. I've only read her historical fics though. But I really enjoyed My Wounded Soldier, Bringing Bella Home and Love Like a Hurricane (as well as the two you've read: Roar Like a Lion and Finding My Thunder). She has a WIP set in the 1940s that I'm waiting for to complete. I agree with you--she has this way of setting up the time frame so you feel like you're there. The language sometimes takes some getting used to, but it's so well written that it doesn't take long to immerse oneself in the fic.

P.S. Confessions After Dark is short, so if you want to take a break, it's a nice treat.

Well, I like quiet stories.
Not exactly fluffy stories, but like Touching Solitude not drama after drama after drama, just life as it happens.

There should be a word for it...

There probably is a word for it - someone who is more smarter and culturaler than me would know what it was.

I was actually trying to pretend to be intelligent last night, and was telling some friends that I had really enjoyed a book (it was Starry Eyed Inside by Rochelle Allison) for the very reason that you describe above.

There are no murders/rapes/deaths/mafia/accidents in her stories. There is no great angsty climatic moments. But they are just compelling and beautiful.

Of course, I didn't admit that it was a twi fanfic and they all know me well enough that when I said that I couldn't remember the name of the author or the title of the book, I probably didn't.  ^-^

ETD - ooo, I forgot to add (yeah, my memory is that bad!) that Rochelle Allison responded to a tweet and informed me that there was a future-take to SEI in the Fandom4LSS compilation. I read it last night and...

And, it took me FOREVER. It's well written as far as the flow and sp&g but...I don't know, it was just incredibly boring to me. The dialogue she gave her Jasper was pretty proper and, while I know he grew up during more proper times, I'm just not used to that from him and didn't care for it at all. To be honest, I would have flounced this had I not done what I always do and go to the last chapter to see how it ends.

To be honest, I would have flounced this had I not done what I always do and go to the last chapter to see how it ends. I read (what I thought) the tail end of what could have been some good drama/action but it didn't live up to that when I actually read it. I skimmed the last 100 pages or so until I got to the drama, saw where she was going with it and then flounced with 1 chapter left. I saw her Jasper as weak and I can't do weak male leads.

And it says it's a slow build in the summary...that's because it takes the reader forever to plow through lol. No, but seriously, I don't really know how long (in page numbers) it took until the "I Love You's" were busted out, but I do know that it was about a month after Alice and Edward were killed. A month. After their 'mates' died.

There was one, Edward and Alice both died. Alice saw it ahead of time, so they left letters for the family, including one from Edward that invoked some sort of ancient vampire law that made Jasper Bella's Mate, and if they didn't accept, both would be put to death. But dangit, I can't remember what it was, and I know I didn't finish it. Jasper pissed me off too much, he was a total p*ssy in that one to me.

This one?
