  • Hi! I'm Ellachanted and I'm a fanfic-oholic.
Thread #4 - We are crazy talkers here!

ADULT DISCUSSION HERE, SO TRY TO KEEP IT CLEAN! UM NO, WAIT! IF YOU ARE EASILY OFFENDED, LOOK AWAY NOW!

This is the new thread as the other was sooo long and had lots of pages. Continuation of our wonderful discussions on Twilight Fanfiction, Books, and Life in general.  But mostly Twilight fanfics... and life stuff that will get me a NOT ALLOWED statement.

Okay, here is a place to discuss what you are reading, ask for recommendations and complain about the writing.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, so please play nice

Because we know drypen's watching

So while reading Rob's interview in Harper's Bazaar, I came across this interesting visual:

"I kind of want to get more involved with the industry, I really like it,” he says. “I like the speed of it, you can just move so much quicker. I also like designing clothes. It’s weird, it’s kind of a new thing that I have started doing,” he reveals. As I probe him on his design ambitions, I expect the typical actor-turned-designer response of a T-shirt or baseball cap line and am, I admit, a little taken aback by his actual answer. “It’s really embarrassing,” he blushes taking a deep breath as I lean in closer, “I like drawing couture dresses.” It’s as if he is admitting this out loud for the first time. “It’s bizarre! I started doing it and I was like ‘what is happening?’ Suddenly I had like a sketchbook full of dresses. I like the sort of artistry of it, it’s kid of like costume design,” Robert divulges. So can we expect to see him showcasing his designs at Paris fashion week in the future? “That would be the most random thing ever but I actually really want to do it. I don’t know though, it could be incredibly embarrassing.”

So Rob sketches how he wants clothes to looks on women...

Anyone?? Anyone?? >:D

Does anyone else want to volunteer to be his mannequin? Mannequin's get felt up, right? :D

Thanks for explaining, Ellachanted! I think I'll stick to my system though. Sure - downloading with Calibre might be faster. But I like to have my fics in PDF and ePub and save it three times in different places. OCD much, I know!  :D
But I'm with you here. I like to reread favorites or parts of favorites and I can't stand the thought of losing my fics.
Hmmm, if you're going to save it 3 times, might I recommend one time be Calibre?

I have multiple backups and versions as well.  Though I usually avoid PDF unless that's the way it's given to me.  It's just too hard to read, even on my computer.  But then, I don't read stories in Word either, other than the one's I beta.  I like to have a full readable page on the screen.  With PDF, unless it was converted in a large enough script, it won't be readable without enlarging it. Then you have to scroll down.  I guess it's not that big of a deal.  It's just annoying.  ;)

I have all of my fics in calibre, then my library is backed up to a couple of flash drives and 2 clouds.

I've had WAY too many computers crash on me to chance anything anymore. I've lost everything so many times that I would probably lose my shit if mu system crashed now and I lost all of these fics/books that I've spent so long collecting

Me too :D So clearly I'm a closet PK (Leblo, you are not alone....) But honestly from what I remember the first chapter is the best, didn't it go downhill after that?

I can't remember....there was the first chapter that was, ahem...well done. And then a couple after that (lemon on a motorcycle IIRC) but yeah, it got kinda blah after that one

Do you mind me asking how you back up in two clouds? I have my calibre fic library saved in google drive, but i can't figure out how to double back it up. I was going to put it in copy, as I have tons of room there, but it, like, moves it from one to the other, and I don't LIKE the copy app on my tablet, it's a pain to get the books out of it. Or I'm just not smart enough, lol.

tissue warnings--good or bad?
« Reply #4366 on: September 07, 2013, 11:20 AM »
Do you all like tissue warnings? Personally, I don't--especially when I read the passage that follows and am not crying. Then I think that the fic isn't as well written as the author intended when I wouldn't have thought that if no warning had been presented. Ugh. Annoying.

and to catch up:
1. Love that someone else out there is enjoying Ava Claire's finally finished series!!! I cannot wait to read this.  >:D
2. Getting groped isn't unique to the tube. It has happened to me in NYC a couple of times. The last time it was some jerk who kept pressing up against my rear and when I tried to turn slightly he just did it to my hip. More shocking was my reaction--I just stood there! I didn't know what to do and was afraid when I wished I would've reamed him.
3. So glad I don't use Calibre! I already have more fics than I can possibly read, so this latest meltdown doesn't effect me. Sorry to those of you who are having trouble though.
4. I'm not currently backing up and would love to figure out how to do so in a free way (and hopefully easily)
5. Glad you liked Confessions After Dark! I always get nervous when I write that something was great for fear others will reply, "Why?" So I try to be conservative in doling those out.

Hope you're having a great Saturday!

I hate any kind of warnings! I also hate when Fic authors treat me like a child, if I'm reading an M rated story I expect it to be written for an adult and so to be treated like one...This is my bugbear, hence I never read ANs either at the start or end of a chapter.

There must be something wrong and dirty with me because the premise was what had me reading Ride.    8)

Maybe it's too many years travelling on London Underground and being occasionally felt-up by actual smelly perv's, for the story to hold any attraction for me.

i have my sugarsync desktop set to automatically update when anything new is added to my calibre folder.

Now I WAS manually adding new fics to my skydrive...am now trying to figure out how to get it to auto update like sugarsync does.

I have a google drive but never use it for some reason. I also have box, cubby, asus web and dropbox but don't use them to back up files.

I am having a hard time following the last part of your post, which app is a copy app on your tab?

In that case your best bet is either the Northern Line and/or Victoria Line.   :D :D :D   Come to think of it the National Gallery is also a good place to be hit on and they tend to be less smelly.   ;)

EDIT Any of you ladies use Spotify? Just downloaded it and was wondering how to set it to recommend songs based on your preferences....To be honest I doubt I'll use it after the 6 months gift voucher I got in a Goodie bag runs out; the idea of not 'owning' the music seems odd to me? It must be a generational thing...

Hmmm, if you're going to save it 3 times, might I recommend one time be Calibre?

I've counted my back-ups. Actually I back all my fics up 4 or 5 times. Twice on my PC (one of them is Calibre), once on a separate hard-drive, twice in two different clouds.
I tried to add some columns like you suggested in your instruction, Ellachanted, but I couldn't download from ff.net via Calibre. Are you ladies still getting the error message too?

Is google drive the path where Calibre saves the fics? There is a option "save to harddrive" (I don't know if this is the exact naming since I use the german version). You can save your complete library by this on another device or place on your PC. But it doesn't change the original place of your Calibre library. It's a back-up option.

4. I'm not currently backing up and would love to figure out how to do so in a free way (and hopefully easily)

I use 2 clouds at the moment. Dropbox.com and Skydrive.com. You get an amount of free GB at the beginning. On dropbox you can gain more space by doing certain things like inviting friends or liking on FB/Twitter. On Skydrive you get much more free space from the beginning.

Copy is another cloud with an android app. You start out with a LOT of space( I have 27 GB, haven't paid a dime), so I like it. But I don't like the app, it's not as easy to use as dropbox or drive.

I have two calibre libraries. Real books automatically save to Dropbox, fics automatically save to Drive. I know I can probably copy the entire folder to another spot, then put it in the Copy folder, but that's time consuming, plus it won't automatically update when I add new fics, which means I have to remember to add them to that every time.

I don't need warnings. The only warnings I want and need are rape warnings. Preferably in the summary.
