Okay, here is a place to discuss what you are reading, ask for recommendations and complain about the writing.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, so please play nice

Nolebucgrl is always a good place to start in my book. It is a darker fic than her others, but not dark dark. I wouldn't really call it angsty. It's more dark humor.
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.
It does have what I call an HEA (B&E together, in love, yadda yadda). It's OOC, without the usual gang.

I haven't read the other yet. What's the word on them? Any good? Keeping in mind my taste run along Ella's and Book's...
Thank you! The other ones that I listed have been recommended on the boards over and over again.  From what I remember a few of them were in many top 10 lists.    I've been wanting to read Beyond Time for so long...  maybe I should finally start it?  It's sooo long!

Ok, side note... Demaris, you love Melina Marchetta, right?  She wrote Jellicoe Road.    I just read a fantasy book by  her called Finnikin of the Rock and I really enjoyed it.  It's crazy to me how she can do such a good job writing such different genres.  The two books are nothing alike.

Also, I finished Tropic of Virgo and thought it was really good...  my only criticism is that the drama at the end with the

Trying to figure out what to read next...   looking for something with plenty of UST.  I think that's what you guys call it. LOL Maybe first love kinda stuff?   None of this jump right in the sack kinda love!   Also, doesn't have to be a fic...  Real book suggestions welcome too. :)

Some possibilities:
Beyond Time - TKegl
Taste of Innocence - Nolebucgrl
Boy in the Red Sweater - Starrynytex
Art After 5 - sleepyvalentina
The Tutor - ItzMegan73

I think I flounced Taste of Innocence, I know I've read Boy in the Red Sweater, but nothing jumps out at me about the plot so it wasn't that memorable. I do recall that the prose was nice.

Art After 5 and the mirrored Edward POV, Counterpoint, are great and have the right amount of angst that you would probably enjoy  ;) but they still leave me with such a squicky feeling. Edward is only sixteen at the start of these, and I'm forgetting Bella's exact age, but she's twenty four or twenty five. The premise freaked me out and I put off reading it for YEARS because I'm not here for stories about teens and the older adults they fall in love with. I don't care how advanced the characters are intellectually to the point where they don't relate to any of their peers, there are light years of experience between a socially awkward high school boy and a grown ass woman. With that said, the writing made it easy enough to get through and there was a lot of discussion about the age difference in this story and how it affects the characters.  It's not one of my favorites but I can see why so many people enjoy it.

While I'm on the subject I'd just like to rant a bit, Edward is seen as this student that's so smart he skipped a couple grades and can't relate to any of his classmates because mentally they're all inferior, or that's probably what we're supposed to gather. I read the same premise with a book I just read, one of the characters was really smart~ so she skipped a couple grades as well. It's not that uncommon since I knew quite a few students that skipped grades and were enrolled in classes where everyone else was a couple years older than them. Mostly it's the parents that have to decide whether or not to let their kids skip, because as they get older you start to worry about how they can relate to their peers when they're twelve or thirteen in high school and dealing with everyone else that are probably concerned about what party to go to that weekend. The two stories I mention seem to focus more on how SMART the characters are, versus how they adapt to their peers. It just seems like there would be more to say when you're too young to really fit in anywhere instead of stressing that the characters are too mentally advanced to relate to anyone.

Edward even has a moment of clarity in Art After 5 when he goes off to college and realizes he's surrounded by more smart people~ like him so he's not so isolated in being a couple years younger than everyone around him. No duh.

The Tutor is very sweet! I loved it, but being that it's a high school story, there's dumb high school drama thrown into the mix.

DR vs RP

How's his acting?  I heard he went off on the Pretty saying he was a better actor. He didn't understand why the Pretty got more attention.   :D :D :D :D

Just saying.  Because his acting in the HP series was nothing to write home about.  And they were working from a much better written set of books.

well, duh! what doesn't he understand? surely DR looks in the mirror and can see that Rob is way more better looking, taller and sexier than him   >:( :P puhleease!

I think DR was a very good HP. I liked his work...but huge points were deducted from my perception of him bec. of his dissing Rob, as i tend to do when someone puts down any other actor.  ;D

I am particularly impressed by how his glasses stay on.  As for loving Daniel, how could anyone not?  Did you see him on QI, what a cutie.
I did see him on QI - he's dead brainy.  :)

I actually liked him until I heard about his comments.  He was saying a bunch of things after the last HP that made him seem attention hungry. Although he did improve as he got older, I wouldn't ever say he was better than Rob.  It just kind of turned me off on him.

And I thought Rupert and Emma carried a lot of the scenes for him.  And I have watched all the HP movies multiple times. It is one of the few things my husband and I can agree on to watch. :P

I thought Daniel was fine as Harry Potter, I've seen a few of the things he has done since and he is ok, but I wouldn't run out to a movie just because he was in it.

Rob's role in the Harry Potter movies was a teenage boy and the scenes where Harry and Cedric interact are supposed to be kind of awkward and uncomfortable so there wasn't much either could do with them.  DR probably went off on Rob more because Rob (scruffy or shaved) looks like a man, not a twelve year old boy and  DR is 5'5" to Rob's 6'1".  Rob's acting continues to improve and because of his looks, there will be a wider variety of roles open to him than Daniel.  So I think there could be some jealousy there.

(we need a smiley that is green with envy)

I love him and thought he did a great job as Harry Potter...   He was perfect in every way for that role in my mind!
Now I'm intrigued.   I'm a Christian, but the book is fiction so I'm guessing I won't be bothered by whatever it is that has you steering away. ;-)

No, no KimKim. Please? Me? Steer away from a work of fiction because of a antiquated ideal? Never gonna happen. I'm the woman who read The Perfect Wife and raised an merely eyebrow... :D :D

It certainly is.  :D :DIt's Dan Radcliffe and Dane DeHaan (who I have a bit of a thing for  ^-^)
It's from the movie You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login. There's this really hot scene in it (that rivals the staring one from Shame) where Dan's character Allen Ginsberg is getting a BJ in the library and Dane's character Lucien Carr watches.
This is the kiss scene:

We saw him on stage in London and I thought he did a good job.  But I guess I should add the proviso that I thought he was fine in the Potter films, as well. While he may not be the greatest actor in the world, he improved as he aged.

I have to agree with you FFG. I also saw him on stage here...and he did a bloody good job (and I'll admit, I went in with all my anti-HP prejudice firmly strapped on my shoulder ready to sneer).  It's a hell of a lot harder to do well on stage when no one can yell "cut" and you redo the scene a billion time until you get it right. And the play was Equus  :o  :wtf:

But I' a bit confused, are you ladies saying the DR is a better actor but RP is prettier or......And if RP is getting roles because he's better looking are we saying that's OK? If it were two women would we still be saying it's OK?  I know it's the way that cesspool called Hollywood works, but is it "OK'? Honestly, I'm asking?

On another note: If Lieutenant, Dallas Eve says one more time that Roarke face was 'carved on one of God's more generous days' I'm going to punch someone. We get it, he's handsome. After 16 books, we get the picture! Find a new way of saying it, for F*ck sake JD Robb, or get over it!!! There, rant over

Demaris, Nora/JD Robb has made Roarke such an ideal of a handsome man that when the movie gets casted - whoever gets chosen is never going to meet everybody's expectations.   No one on InDeath.net can agree on who could play him.  The ideal about 10 years ago was Pierce Brosnan but he's too old now.  Hugh Jackman for the past several years has been seen as being an ideal Roarke (some days I can see it and some days no) but now he's also too old.   Whoever gets cast is going to have to be an unknown but no matter who it is - no one is going to be happy.    Rob is getting roles because he is a damned good actor.  He got the Rover because of his acting, not how good looking he is.  He was the one who came up with the wardrobe for Rey and the bad teeth and the bad haircut to get rid of the "Pretty" image.    Daniel Radcliffe fell off my radar years ago.  The press doesn't follow him around like they do Rob and he should be thrilled that he doesn't have that burden.   Its a tribute to Rob (and his family, and his management, and friends) that he's managed to come out of the whole Twilight hubbub and still be a nice unspoiled human being.   There aren't a lot of actors out there these days who will take the time to sign autographs and take pics with the fans wherever he is.   Daniel has more money than Rob - he should just live the good life and shut up.

Personally, I think they are both good actors, but Rob's looks and height  give him more roles to choose from.

I also greatly dislike when one actors disses another, so if DR dissed Rob it makes me think less of DR, but as we all know words can be taken out of context or twisted just to generate attention.

Yeah, yeah. I get all that 'Ideal Handsome Man" codswallop. I'm just over the hackneyed phrase.... The same hackneyed phrase, let me add, over and over again....:-[  Still only 999,000,000 books left to go and for the most part I'm enjoying them.

And of course RP is getting his roles because of how good an actor he is....I mean, I don't know how the world managed before he whizzed in on a broomstick in Harry Potter....

I think it may have come about because DR was discussing life after HP. The interviewer said something to DR about how Rob has been able to get roles after Twilight. And that's when DR dissed him. Basically saying the only reason he gets the roles are his looks and not his acting.  He may not have meant for it to sound the way it did, but it came out really bad. Like he was jealous of Rob's success or more likely the attention Rob would get. DR doesn't get thebig crowds now that he's not HP anymore. I saw a part of the interview on YouTube.

So I'm going to not say anything more on this I think. I haven't seen him in anything but HP so I really can't judge his acting.  Truthfully, I prefer David Tennant over both.  But that's my Whovian coming out.  Okay maybe David and Rob are tied.  :D

I think my last post was May. It's going to take me awhile to get back in the swing of things.  My youngest son (almost 20) was in a bad car accident while traveling home for Mother's Day. My call came from the hospital over an hr away that he was medovac via helicopter. I hope none of you ever, ever, experience that kind of call. I was home alone.  Hubs was on a flight inbound from Brazil.

Not gonna bore you with all the details, but after awhile in ICU, several surgeries, and even longer in the hospital, he is home and healing.  Suppose to go back to the hospital Monday and we are hoping for progression from a walker to a cane. They have already given him the ok to return to the university but I have to admit, I am feeling a little clingy and don't want to see him go.

I hope everyone's summer has been better than mine.

Miss everyone. Feels like my world is upside down.

So sorry to hear of your son's troubles. Glad to hear he is home and on the mend. My thoughts and prayers to your family.

Really sorry to hear that. But I'm glad he's on the mend.

I do understand not wanting to let him go though.
