Why are the sales after Thanksgiving called "Black Friday"?

That is what Black Friday is, right? Here in Australia, we have Black Friday at Easter (Good Friday/Easter Friday) and a few times when we have had catastrophic bushfires, they get the nickname "Black...". The Black Friday bushfires were in 1939.

I think it's called Black Friday because that day of sales is so profitable that it puts retail stores in the black.  Or start the season for retail stores to make a profit or something along those lines.

Next up you need a Halloween one! Edward dressed up as a sexy soldier or wearing a cop uniform, or that totally hot firefighter's gear! Bella dressed (unwillingly!) as a naughty nurse!

We don't really celebrate Halloween too much here.

*gasp* No Walmart OR Halloween???

It's growing a bit, but is VERY commercial - and is only getting bigger because of how much American TV we get.

Most twific Halloweens that I have read follow the Mean Girls rule of Halloween:

In Girl World, Halloween is the one night a year when a girl can dress like a total slut and no other girls can say anything about it.

40 minutes later we are in this f ucking wig store. I am looking at myself in the mirror with this long blonde wig on looking like a f ucking chick.
"That's the one for sure." Bella says
I look at Bella through the mirror. She has her own blonde wig on. She looks much better than I do.
"Bella can you explain to me please why the fuck I have a blonde wig on?"
"It's for our costumes."
"Who am I Paris Hilton?"
Bella smiles at me, I don't think any of this is f ucking funny.
"No idiot you are Eric Northman and I am Sookie Stackhouse."
"You're f ucking me?" I say
"Not yet."
I look at myself in the mirror again; I look like a complete idiot.

No. We ride our kangaroos through the streets, hunting and gathering as we go.

I bartered 6 seashells for a piece of flint last week.

 :D :D :D

Yes - we have Target, all our other chain stores just have different names. We're actually pretty civilised here  ;)

Wow, you are more civilised there compared to us here!

So, just curious, how many loincloths do you own?  Is it made out of kangaroo or wombat skin? How long does it take to dry when you wash them?

Here, we use banana leaves and twine for clothes. It's quite a pain to keep making new ones after a few wearing, worse if you have a big butt and it tears down your crack when you squat... to sit down.  :D :D

Walmart tried to start business here (in Germany) a few years ago but they didn't make profit and were soon gone. They were too expensive compared to other supermarkets and often they built huge stores outside of the cities, why waste gas to drive to Walmart when you have a good, cheaper supermarket nearer?

edit: What I always wanted to ask, what's Target?

Plus, the bargains are supposed to be so incredible that they are likened to a "fire sale". Mayhem, chaos, y'know, exactly what goes on especially at Walmart.

Halloween is also not very popular here. Kids like it and some try to go trick or treating, but most adults just ignore it. My in-laws hate it, because it's "an American festival", but in kindergarten the kids are allowed to dress up.

More popular for dressing up in costumes and drink yourself stupid for days is carnival in February. When I was a kid, we used to go "begging" during those days, that's kind of trick or treating.
So, my daughter in kindergarten can dress up at least three times a year, for carnival in February, for a summer fest and Halloween.  ;)

Sorry - missed this before...

Black Friday is another name for Good Friday - a day of sorrow.

There are many theories as to why the day that remembers Jesus’ death on the cross is known as Good Friday. One school of thought is that Good Friday stems from the words “God’s Friday”, while others interpret “good” in the sense of “observed as holy”. Many Orthodox Christians call the day Great Friday. The day is also known as Black Friday or Sorrowful Friday, as well as Long Friday.

There are no sales - in fact, everything is closed. That only seems to happen on Christmas Day and Good Friday now.

Yup. Nothing open here on Christmas or Good Friday. However I'd say our version of 'Black Friday' are the Boxing Day Sales. Everyone goes NUTS!

Every time I see Black Friday I think of all the brushfires. Especially Black Saturday *shudders* it's the stuff of nightmares.

Our Targets (and K-Marts) are nothing like the ones in the USA. We don't have any grocery products in ours apart from maybe some confectionery/ chocolate bars at the checkouts. They are also much more orientated around the clothes and manchester, rather than appliances.

I'd say our closest store to Wall-Mart would be BigW, however there is not nearly the same large electronics/ appliances range or a supermarket, they mostly sell bulk confectionery, crisps, cosmetics & shampoos and stuff, household cleaning goods and pet foods.

I thought ASDA was the Wall-mart of the UK (owned by the same company). No Wall-mart here, thank the lord! That place is horrific.

Our Kmarts and Big Ws must be different to the ones down south - they have quite large grocery sections, although it is lollies/chocs, biscuits, soft drinks, etc. Great for parties, not so good for every day living.

Also I was amazed the last time I went into a store - I can't remember whether it was Kmart or Big W - with the range of electrical goods and the prices - microwaves for $30, kettles and toasters for $5. It's probably all cheap stuff from China, but it's really all you need to get started!

My father is obsessed with Aldi! There isn't one up here, but whenever I am down visiting, he constantly wants to get the groceries (and anything else they might sell) from there - but then will buy a heap of food that him and Mum don't even eat, like tinned foods and packet mixes. They do sell the best Christmas mince tarts though!

No ours have all that, that is what I was saying, it's only lollies and junk. The Targets and Wall-Marts I went to in the US had full of Wollworths or Coles like supermarkets in them! Frozen Veggies, produce and everything.

All the electronics in K-mart and junk and rubbish, as are most of their products now they've changed all their stores around. I like Big-W, Target and David Jones. DJs is the best though, they sell large appliances too which I like, not the shitty no-brand stuff from K-mart.

We love Aldi too. Most of our staples we buy from there, only pop up to Woolies for a few brand-name things we prefer and stuff you can't get there. And the weekly specials are often awesome.
